The story is a well-crafted blend of Lovecraftian horror and noir detective mystery, praised for its engaging characters, rich lore, and atmospheric setting that captures the 1930s vibe. While some find the pacing and ending slightly rushed or simple, the overall narrative captivates with clever humor, intertwining multiple Lovecraft tales, and strong writing that keeps players invested. The game balances a straightforward, accessible plot with references that delight fans, making it a compelling and immersive experience despite minor criticisms about linearity and dropped plot threads.
“Okay, so I'm a huge Lovecraft fan, and I think along with Dreams in the Witchhouse this is the best Lovecraft game I have ever played. It catches the Lovecraft vibe perfectly. It is one storyline but so many Lovecraft stories are included in this game that as a true connoisseur of Lovecraft's art you feel amazed. All the familiar names and stories are mixed together in a great experience that every chapter holds something new yet familiar (if you are a fan like me). They got everything right, all the important places and names are in this game. The riddles aren't too hard; it's a pretty straightforward adventure. You never get stuck for too long if you systematically search every screen and actually pay attention to the story. It is a story-driven game with great humor. The noir detective and his socially awkward partner are the perfect couple for a Lovecraft story, and the game doesn't take itself too seriously. Simply love it.”
“The story itself is pretty solid: a murder mystery with some twists and turns, and the ending actually feels satisfying, tying up all loose plot threads and giving closure to our protagonists.”
“The story, much like the previous entries from Postmodern Adventures, primarily features themes heavily surrounding the occult, but what sets it apart is that this story combines Lovecraftian horror with a detective noir story, to great effect.”
“There were a few threads that were just left loose (e.g., aliens abducting people and babies to collect their blood and experiment on them), the ending was a a bit too simple and fast. Overall, the story is okay.”
“I did, however, find the ending a bit disappointing and anticlimactic; it would have benefited from more careful development, and a couple of plot points are dropped without explanation.”
“In worst cases like a 'portal to university' the game doesn't know how to tie a solution to plot and just gives up on consistency of happenings. Also, the museum is an awful idea; it basically spoils so many books in the dumbest way possible, giving a 2-3 sentence synopsis of the book's plot and main twists like an annoying friend who tells you all the spoilers and nothing else.”
