The Alien Cube

The Alien Cube is a very thin slice from an authentic Lovecraftian pie. It doesn’t entirely look the part, but you’ll take a bite and know exactly what you’re sinking your teeth into and probably end up reminded why you love this flavor of horror. From the surreal environments to the indescribable horrors after your blood, it’s the stuff known and loved by the Lovecraft community. Be warned though, that while the flavor tastes the part, The Alien Cube‘s optimization issues and occasionally lacking gameplay can make it tough to swallow. That said, if you can forgive a few missteps and have a hankering for hellish horrors, it’s worth digging into – especially when you consider its asking price.

While some players appreciate the atmospheric visuals and the eerie storytelling, many criticize the plot for being predictable, shallow, and at times nonsensical, with significant reliance on recycled tropes. • “Great story and the game looks amazing.”
    • “The story was mysterious enough to keep me engaged to the very end to see 'the truth' and faults aside I enjoyed playing through it.”
    • “The story is bog-standard, predictable Lovecraft and isn't very compelling.”

    • “The entire game feels like it has been stitched together from random environments and whilst graphically pleasing, the 'story' joining these environments is paper thin and not particularly interesting.”

The graphics of the game have received widespread acclaim for their stunning visuals, immersive atmosphere, and effective use of lighting, often compared to AAA titles despite being developed by a small team. • “The graphics are astounding, and the storyline is like a winding staircase that never ends, (in other words, it's amazing).”

    • “Graphical options are very sorely lacking, and on top of it being very poorly optimized, it makes for an overall laggy experience.”

    • “This game is definitely worth your money; the atmosphere of the game is absolutely amazing.”
    • “The atmosphere, environment, and some good jump scares create an engaging experience.”
    • “The environments are beautifully crafted, but I do not think they were successful at capturing a Lovecraftian or horror atmosphere very well.”
    • “I really appreciate the work for this game and also the design and the attempt to create a Lovecraftian atmosphere, but to be honest, I felt partially bored and annoyed with the game.”
    • “Also, the chasing enemies fail to scare and destroy the creepy atmosphere in my opinion.”
  • gameplay
    56 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay has been widely criticized for its linearity and simplicity, often revolving around tedious key-fetching and backtracking, which detracts from the overall experience. While some players appreciate the atmospheric visuals and narrative elements, many feel that the mechanics are uninspired and serve more as obstacles to the story rather than enhancing it. Overall, the gameplay is seen as a minimalist walking simulator that lacks engaging challenges, making it a mixed experience for those seeking depth in gameplay.

    • “The gameplay is a rather minimalist affair: you walk/run around, interact with your environments, solve simple puzzles, and read notes about your surroundings.”
    • “Not only is the presentation superior and highly polished, but the gameplay in particular sheds a lot of the early awkwardness and frustration with large open areas and annoying chases.”
    • “I liked the simple mechanics and ways of figuring our way out.”
    • “Gameplay is tedious, with nearly every door or passageway requiring a key or some action/item to progress.”
    • “The gameplay consists of moving slowly and finding some type of key to unlock some type of door, tons of backtracking, the occasional jumpscare in the form of a vision or brief chase sequence.”
    • “The gameplay, however, is not great even for a walking sim unfortunately; it's uninspired honestly.”
  • optimization
    18 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's optimization is widely criticized, with users reporting significant performance issues such as frequent frame rate drops, stuttering, and crashes, even on high-end hardware. Many noted a lack of graphical settings and minimal differences between quality presets, leading to an overall laggy experience. While some found the visuals appealing, the poor optimization detracted from gameplay enjoyment, making it difficult to recommend.

    • “Interestingly, there wasn't really much difference between low, medium, and high settings, neither in performance nor in visual fidelity.”
    • “Performance is acceptable for the looks.”
    • “There were a few minor glitches and performance issues that I've experienced.”
    • “Poorly optimized, limited settings for graphics, lots of bugs, extremely dark and staticky chase scenes, poor first-person platforming, mediocre puzzles.”
    • “I had terrible performance out of this game: framerates regularly dropping into the teens and even single digits, as well as about a half dozen crashes throughout the 4.4 hours I played.”
    • “The optimization is bad.”
  • music
    12 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The music in the game is praised for its atmospheric and eerie qualities, effectively contributing to the overall horror experience with slower mood pieces, horror stingers, and haunting chants. While some reviewers noted a lack of memorable tracks, the ambient soundtrack and sound effects are generally considered superb, enhancing the game's unique atmosphere. However, the inability to adjust sound settings individually was mentioned as a drawback.

    • “This has not only fantastic graphics and an atmospheric soundtrack, but also real horror.”
    • “It's beautifully rendered and directed, with superb ambient music, sound effects, and a bit of voice acting.”
    • “The music was very atmospheric and creepy, and sometimes it reminded me a little bit of the fantastically eerie and haunting soundtrack for 'Amnesia: The Dark Descent.'”
    • “Most of the music consists of slower mood pieces, horror stingers, and strange Gregorian chants which, while always providing a decent Lovecraft vibe, doesn’t really accentuate any memorable pieces. I guess it doesn’t really need to beyond the strange shouts and whimpers.”
    • “For example, there is only one setting for sound; you can't set different volumes for music, ambient sounds, speech, etc.”
    • “I can't say it actually scared me (the only game that ever did was Outlast), but the leveled-up eeriness of the soundtrack succeeded in creeping me out more than once.”
  • stability
    11 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's stability is a mixed bag, with some players reporting significant bugs, particularly in Chapter 6 and a game-breaking black screen in Chapter 5 that requires a restart. While many found the game mostly bug-free during regular gameplay, others experienced frequent crashes and performance issues, leading to a lack of recommendation from some users. Overall, stability appears to be a concern, with varying experiences among players.

    • “I do recommend this game, but only because it was cheap, looks good, and was mostly bug-free for the entire gameplay, apart from a single game-breaking black screen on chapter 5 that can be solved by restarting the game.”
    • “- mostly bug-free (at least serious ones) for most of the gameplay.”
    • “Chapter 6 is buggy (note: there are 8 chapters).”
    • “I got all 8, but this buggy game chose to only unlock... 2.”
    • “But it freeze-crashes the moment I try to make any movement with the character; WASD keys, jump, crouch, etc. instantly freeze/crash the game.”
  • grinding
    10 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Players find the grinding aspect of the game to be tedious, with excessive backtracking and the need for keys or items to progress, which detracts from the overall experience. The lack of combat and challenging puzzles further contribute to a sense of monotony, making exploration feel more like a chore than a rewarding endeavor. Overall, the game struggles to balance its elements, leading to a frustrating grind rather than an engaging gameplay experience.

    • “You'll need a second life for grinding.”
    • “Gameplay is tedious, with nearly every door or passageway requiring a key or some action/item to progress.”
    • “There is no combat and the puzzles are more tedious than challenging.”
    • “That, and the 'puzzles' and backtracking to find a random key-type object are extremely tedious; it would almost have been better to pick a side, either full-on game with some kind of gameplay elements at the sacrifice of continuity, or a full-on linear experience type walking simulator where there is little or no room for needing to restart or go in the wrong direction.”
  • humor
    4 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The humor in the game is described as hit-or-miss, with some players finding moments amusing, while others feel that certain comedic elements lack purpose and fail to deliver genuine laughs. Additionally, the experience can be marred by technical issues that erase progress, detracting from the overall enjoyment of the humor.

    • “Brevity would have shown that even the cultists/ancients have a sense of humor.”
    • “Speaking of exploring, you can pick up 'secrets' which unlock some basic concept art, but the funny thing about that is you can get them all, and if you have to restart the app to get past some bugs, all that progress is gone!”
  • emotional
    4 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Players report a strong emotional impact from the game, highlighting its ability to evoke the unsettling atmosphere reminiscent of Lovecraft's writing. The grim environments, particularly the uncle's filthy apartment, contribute to a sense of discomfort, while the game's one-developer background elicits a mix of empathy and critical reflection on its limitations. Overall, the experience leaves players feeling both captivated and uneasy.

    • “Playing this made me feel like I could envision Lovecraft's writing as an experience through this game; it blew my mind.”
    • “I think the lack of interaction with the world made me feel as if an ancient one was taking ice cream scoops out of my brain.”
    • “Knowing this is a one-dev game made me feel a little less critical.”
  • replayability
    3 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's linear structure and short length significantly limit its replayability, with many users expressing that there is little incentive to play again. However, some players note that the ending creates a compelling reason to revisit the game, suggesting a mixed perspective on its overall replay value.

    • “The game has a very high replay value because of how it ends.”
    • “Each playthrough offers new choices and experiences, making it incredibly replayable.”
    • “With multiple endings and branching storylines, you'll want to dive back in for more.”
    • “The game is way too short and very linear, which means you will get almost no replayability from this.”
    • “In my opinion, there is no replay value at all.”
  • character development
    1 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Reviewers express a desire for deeper character development, suggesting that while the game offers enjoyable spookiness for genre enthusiasts, it falls short compared to other titles that provide more engaging character arcs and mechanics.
