Sword Legacy Omen

I have mixed feelings about Sword Legacy: Omen, which basically means that given more time, we would have had a much better game on our hands. As it is, Sword Legacy: Omen is the type of game that will definitely pique your interest when you start playing it, but bore you to death until near the end due to some unfortunate choices made by the developers. Although it does have an original approach on the Arthurian legends, the story and the characters are forgettable. There's not enough soul put into the narrative, dialogues and characters to make Sword Legacy: Omen really shine. The art style and some innovations added to the combat system don't really make up for what's missing from the other aspects of the game. I would put Sword Legacy: Omen in the “missed opportunity” type of games since there are many inconsistencies between various parts like visuals, story, and sound. While I loved the idea of going back in time to visit Britain in the early Middle Age, let alone experience the events happening before King Arthur's time, I felt that the journey was pretty dull and uninteresting till near the end.

  • Story and lore based on a darker reinterpretation of Arthurian legend, with decent narration and character interactions
  • Game is short and linear with limited replayability and some shallow RPG elements
  • Bugs and technical issues including freezes, crashes, and save system problems that can force mission restarts
  • Some clunky UI and controls, lack of camera rotation, slow animations, and occasionally unintelligent enemy AI
  • story
    364 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The story in Sword Legacy: Omen, set in a dark and broken Britannia before King Arthur's reign, offers a linear, character-driven narrative with some interesting twists on Arthurian legend. While some players appreciate its serious tone and engaging companion dynamics, many criticize it as clichéd, rushed, and lacking depth or meaningful choices, compounded by mediocre dialogue and frequent bugs that disrupt pacing. Overall, the story is serviceable but not compelling, providing enough context for the tactical gameplay but falling short of leaving a lasting impression.

    • “This tonal choice defines the experience from the outset, positioning the story as a personal journey through a broken Britannia rather than a sweeping fantasy epic driven by spectacle.”
    • “The story recontextualizes iconic figures such as Merlin while introducing companions whose motivations are complex and often morally ambiguous.”
    • “Dialogue and story beats focus on consequence and sacrifice, emphasizing that heroism in this world is costly and rarely rewarded without loss.”
    • “It was written on a whim; the plot is far-fetched and the dialogues exist just for the sake of it.”
    • “From its lackluster gameplay mechanics to its uninspiring storyline, Sword Legacy Omen falls short of its potential, leaving players disappointed and frustrated.”
    • “Despite drawing inspiration from Arthurian legends, Sword Legacy Omen's storyline fails to capture the essence of this rich lore. The narrative lacks originality and compelling character development or meaningful plot twists. The one-dimensional characters and predictable plot points make it difficult to become invested, resulting in a lack of emotional connection and immersion.”
  • gameplay
    134 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay of Sword Legacy: Omen features classic turn-based tactical combat with straightforward mechanics such as flanking, buffs/debuffs, knock-back, and a finite willpower system, offering strategic depth and environmental interactions. While it provides a decent challenge and some enjoyable moments, many users report issues including unpolished design, lack of innovative mechanics, frustrating bugs, clunky pacing, and imbalance, resulting in a gameplay experience that feels shallow and occasionally tedious. However, fans of simple, traditional tactical RPGs may find it satisfactory, especially considering its modest scope and budget.

    • “Although the mix of visual styles can occasionally feel uneven, it generally supports gameplay by ensuring that enemy positions, terrain features, and ability effects are easy to interpret during combat.”
    • “Decent story, but what makes this game very fun is the gameplay, the tactical combat, how you combine your different classes with their different abilities, how to utilize the environment to give you the advantage over the enemies.”
    • “About the gameplay, there are old-school mechanics (flanking, AoE spells, buffs & debuffs) and also two new ones: knock-back (you can push/pull enemies into objects, throw enemies from mountain edges, etc.) and willpower, which is finite, doesn't regenerate on its own, and gives you extra action points and other bonuses.”
    • “Legacy of the Sword: Omen: tedious and disgusting gameplay - bugs - game imbalance, including weak "heroes" - low-quality graphics and special effects = 0/10.”
    • “The game is lacking in so many aspects, the story is not interesting, the gameplay is shallow, I think it is the core of the game itself that is broken.”
    • “From its lackluster gameplay mechanics to its uninspiring storyline, Sword Legacy Omen falls short of its potential, leaving players disappointed and frustrated.”
  • graphics
    109 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game’s graphics are widely praised for their unique, hand-drawn, comic-like art style that brings a vibrant, medieval world to life with distinctive, colorful visuals. While the aesthetic appeal is a major highlight and suits the tactical turn-based gameplay well, many note that the resolution is capped at 1080p and some animations or technical aspects feel basic or clunky. Despite some graphical glitches and lack of polish typically attributed to a small or mobile-port project, the art style remains a consistent strong point that elevates the overall experience.

    • “The hand-drawn art style brings the medieval world to life with vibrant colors and intricate details.”
    • “The dark cartoon visuals are stunning and the tactical combat really draws you in.”
    • “Genuinely great and entertaining turn-based RPG with an amazing, gorgeous art style!”
    • “Legacy of the sword: omen: tedious and disgusting gameplay - bugs - game imbalance, including weak "heroes" - low-quality graphics and special effects = 0/10.”
    • “The game is riddled with bugs, including frequent crashes, graphical glitches, and frustrating AI inconsistencies.”
    • “Also 1920x1080 is the highest resolution out of the 6 options available, and there is no key-rebinding or any graphic/performance options, again like a mobile port.. oh and it crashes every time I try to exit the game.”
  • music
    54 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The music in the game is widely criticized for being repetitive, annoying, and lacking variety, with many players muting it early on. While some find the subdued, medieval-inspired soundtrack fitting and atmospheric, most consider it forgettable, poorly placed, and detracting from the overall experience. Overall, the soundtrack fails to leave a lasting or positive impression.

    • “The soundtrack complements this approach with subdued, medieval-inspired themes that reinforce the somber mood without drawing attention away from strategy.”
    • “The art is fine and suiting, the music is nice and atmospheric, the dialogues are vivid and genuine, although the characters felt somewhat generic and a bit flat, although each of them delivered exactly what one would expect of their archetype.”
    • “The atmosphere of the game is well accompanied by the music, creating a sense of urgency and danger.”
    • “Furthermore, the sound design, including the soundtrack, fails to leave a lasting impression, with forgettable compositions and unremarkable audio effects.”
    • “I had to mute the music in literally the first 30 minutes of gameplay because it loops a super short music and it gets on your nerves really fast.”
    • “It's also that royalty-free generic forgettable fantasy soundtrack that you've heard a million times before - only worse.”
  • character development
    38 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Character development in the game is widely criticized for being shallow, lacking richness, originality, and meaningful progression. While some appreciate the cool character designs and the flexibility in party member choices, the writing, narrative pacing, and dialogue fail to deliver compelling or well-developed characters.

    • “The game will reward your personal choice of party members regardless of your roster choice, and that's a sign of solid character design.”
    • “The narrative lacks originality and fails to provide compelling character development or meaningful plot twists.”
    • “Conceptually the story is alright, but the presentation, pacing, dialogue, character development, etc. are off the mark.”
    • “Writing is sub-par, poor character development and generic strategy.”
  • stability
    24 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game suffers from numerous bugs and stability issues, including frequent crashes, freezes that force mission restarts, and glitches affecting gameplay mechanics and quests. Despite these problems, some users note that the game generally runs well and is enjoyable, but the persistent instability significantly impacts the overall experience.

    • “The game is riddled with bugs, including frequent crashes, graphical glitches, and frustrating AI inconsistencies.”
    • “I have lost several hours worth of quests because it glitches out and freezes after I kill an enemy.”
    • “Full of bugs, randomly freezes and you are forced to start the mission over.”
  • replayability
    22 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game is generally considered to have very low replayability due to its linear story, lack of multiple endings, side quests, and difficulty settings. While some players note minor variations possible through different character builds and equipment choices, most feel the short, straightforward experience limits motivation for multiple playthroughs. Overall, replay value is minimal, making it best suited for a single complete playthrough.

    • “You can choose which abilities to buy as you earn renown and you can choose different equipment options which allows for some replayability to try different characters, skills, and gear loadouts.”
    • “Since Sword Legacy Omen is story-driven, there isn't much replay value unless you play with different characters the second time around.”
    • “There is an interesting story, good gameplay, some replay value, and a bit of difficulty (but not that much).”
    • “Very little replayability, if any (no difficulty settings, no side quests, linear story, only one ending, very easy achievements, static-class characters).”
    • “Since the game is very linear and you can do everything in one playthrough, there is zero replayability and once you finish the game, you probably won’t ever touch it again, which is a shame since the price of 18 euro is rather high for a game that lasts at most 15 hours.”
    • “Expect it to last about 10 hours or less, and it has zero replay value since everything is linear and there are no decisions, consequences, nor alternative builds to try.”
  • grinding
    12 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Grinding in the game is frequently described as tedious and frustrating, with slow pacing and design choices that hinder smooth progression. While leveling and farming are possible, the game discourages relying solely on stat-boosting, instead emphasizing tactical play, making grinding feel more challenging and less rewarding. Some players find the extra effort manageable and beneficial near the endgame, despite the overall grind being tiresome.

    • “Most of my play time is card farming.”
    • “There are also a lot of strange design choices that end up making the mechanics frustrating and tedious.”
    • “You need to plan ahead but not so much that it might confuse you; that's why I consider this a 'lite' version, and grinding a bit extra gold for better gear will be quite manageable albeit tedious at times.”
  • atmosphere
    11 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The atmosphere in Sword Legacy: Omen is generally praised for its unique, immersive blend of lush and eerie environments, supported by fitting art and music that enhance the mood. While some find the pacing slow and the execution inconsistent, many appreciate the focused, atmospheric storytelling rooted in Arthurian legend. Overall, the game succeeds through subtlety and a well-crafted sense of place, despite occasional shortcomings in character depth and immersion.

    • “Taken as a whole, Sword Legacy: Omen is a focused, atmospheric tactical RPG that succeeds through restraint rather than excess.”
    • “From lush forests to eerie dungeons, each location feels unique and atmospheric.”
    • “The atmosphere of the game is well accompanied by the music, creating a sense of urgency and danger.”
    • “Though the atmosphere is a mix of highs and lows, I’m afraid the immersion was always doomed due to the frustrating criticisms I described earlier.”
    • “The story takes place in a broken Britannia, seemingly a sort of prequel to King Arthur.”
    • “While largely linear, these segments provide context and pacing, allowing the world’s history and atmosphere to surface without overwhelming the player.”
  • humor
    6 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's humor is a mix of light, charming moments and funny spells that provide relief from its grim tone, with some cutscenes and tracks adding a comedic touch. However, certain humor attempts and dialogue fall flat, undermining the overall tension.

    • “I normally don’t write reviews but what a great little game... Sword Legacy Omen has some light humor giving you a break between grim dark gritty dungeons you encounter throughout the storyline.”
    • “The cutscenes are simple, beautiful and honestly funny.”
    • “It has its basics: turn-based, fun combat if you do not count squares ;) , funny spells and team combos.”
  • emotional
    5 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's emotional impact is weakened by one-dimensional characters, predictable plot points, and lack of voice acting, making it hard for players to connect or feel immersed. While there are attempts to add emotional weight through themes like survival and vengeance, key scenes often fall flat and fail to evoke genuine feelings.

    • “His pursuit of Excalibur is less about destiny and more about survival and vengeance, lending emotional weight to a familiar mythos.”
    • “But before I got to that acceptance, the game made me feel stupid.”
    • “There's a scene early on when a random NPC you don't care about and don't even know anything about dies; it's an unskippable cutscene that is supposed to be emotional, I think?”
  • optimization
    5 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's optimization is mixed; while it generally runs fine without major stability issues, it lacks advanced graphics or performance settings and suffers from crashes on exit. Additionally, the highest resolution is limited to 1920x1080, and some improvements could be made to AI efficiency.

    • “I didn’t notice any performance or stability issues and the game runs just fine.”
    • “Performance-wise it's kinda weak but overall is pretty good.”
    • “Also, 1920x1080 is the highest resolution out of the 6 options available, and there is no key re-binding or any graphic/performance options. It feels like a mobile port. Additionally, the game crashes every time I try to exit.”
    • “Performance-wise, it's kinda weak but overall is pretty good.”
    • “There can be some optimizations for the battle AI.”
  • monetization
    2 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Users criticize the game for excessive advertising, which undermines the experience, though some acknowledge it doesn't feel like a straightforward cash grab.

    • “The only thing they want is to drown you in advertising”
