  • Outstanding hand-drawn art style with vibrant, expressive animations and unique geometric designs that create a mesmerizing dreamlike world.
  • Engaging and satisfying platforming mechanics including smooth and responsive controls, momentum-based movement, ceiling walking, and bounce combos that encourage creativity and speedrunning.
  • Excellent soundtrack inspired by Sega Genesis FM synth music that enhances the whimsical and nostalgic atmosphere while complementing each unique level and boss battle.
  • Difficulty spikes in later levels and boss fights can feel punishing and sometimes frustrating, especially due to instant death pits and a health system that penalizes falling disproportionately.
  • Level design occasionally suffers from visual clarity issues, making it hard to distinguish between enemies, NPCs, platforms, and hazards, leading to some trial-and-error deaths.
  • Lack of quality-of-life features for completionists such as no clear tracking of collectible cards per level and no in-game time comparisons, along with dated elements like lives system causing repeated backtracking.

    • “In addition it shines thanks to its solid and super fun gameplay, offering a wide variety of polished mechanics such as gravity inversion, double jumps, launching yourself like a cannon, and bouncing off enemies.”
    • “All these elements allow the player to move through levels smoothly, building momentum and taking full advantage of each mechanic.”
    • “The gameplay of this title is very reminiscent of Sega Mega Drive classics like Sonic, Ristar, Decap Attack, Tempo, and Rocket Knight Adventure.”
    • “The gameplay doesn't do anything groundbreaking mechanically, but it feels good and is free of clunk.”
    • “I think it takes quite a bit to get used to the mechanics, but once you get the hang of it there's a lot of fun to be had.”
    • “I didn't care much for the gameplay during world 1, but the levels throw more interesting stuff at you during world 2 and beyond.”
  • music

    51 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The music in the game receives widespread praise for its catchy, nostalgic, and expertly crafted Genesis/Mega Drive-inspired soundtrack, featuring unique themes for each level and boss. Reviewers highlight its blend of enhanced 16-bit style with memorable, emotional, and twangy FM synth elements that perfectly complement the charming art style and gameplay. Overall, the soundtrack is a standout feature that enhances the game's warm, playful, and dream-like atmosphere.

    • “The soundtrack is peak Genesis goodness, having unique themes for each boss and nearly every cutscene, while utilizing instrument patches in a way that makes some pieces feel rather emotional.”
    • “Somnabuster is an absolute blast with a fast and precise movement kit that feels like a combination of Sonic Mania and Shovel Knight: Plague of Shadows, a fun dreamscape setting that is used for creative level theming and trippy visuals accompanied by an equally strange and catchy soundtrack, with solid character designs and a cute plot to tie the whole thing together.”
    • “Finally got to play the whole game after over a year since last time, absolutely worth the wait, stellar character and level designs all throughout, great use of the base moveset of our character, and really catchy and vibing music to go along with it, and the story is a lot more impactful than I could have anticipated.”
    • “In a game with such a potent, captivating soundtrack, one that doesn’t sound quite like anything I’ve ever heard from a Mega Drive game despite its immediately recognizable sound font being echoed throughout, there’s this one thing that plays when you get a game over. Not the game over theme itself, even if that one is a somberly sweet tune that warms you a bit after you lose your lives… rather, I’m talking about the song that plays when you hit continue. It didn’t matter that the reason I was hearing it was because I had failed tremendously against a boss or plummeted to my death after a wrong jump, because in that extremely short little song that’s meant to be a companion to an extremely good animation as Dolly prepares to face the level yet again, there was something that felt as dream-like as the rest of the game. A song that made the dream real.”
    • “I don't know, moments in Music City and Toy City felt so wrong for a 'lawful good' character.”
    • “Minuses: 1) In arcade world (music part), some arrows (mostly up arrows) worked strange, I pushed up using stick and game didn't detect it, but ok stick, I can understand why it works bad, but for some reason in second room last 3 arrows couldn’t detect gamepad arrows/cross buttons many times, put perfectly detected stick.”

    • “Your mileage may vary though as most of the story is more episodic with each world being its own plot, and not really doing anything that special until the end.”
    • “The story and writing was mostly not really my thing, but doesn't get in the way any more than you want it to.”
    • “I did come away with a much more positive view of the story because of the ending, but I just wish the experience felt a little more cohesive and I got more of that type of story leading up to the ending rather than it being backloaded.”
