  • Engaging story with interesting time manipulation mechanics that enhance gameplay.
  • Solid gunplay and a variety of weapons that feel satisfying to use.
  • Atmospheric setting reminiscent of Bioshock and Half-Life, creating a unique experience.
  • Short campaign length, typically around 5-7 hours, which may leave players wanting more.
  • Lack of subtitles and poor audio mixing can make it difficult to follow the story.
  • Some gameplay mechanics, like the time manipulation device, feel underutilized and could have been expanded upon.
  • story
    1,759 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The story of "Singularity" is a blend of time travel and horror, set on a mysterious Soviet island where experiments with a powerful element, E-99, have gone awry. While the narrative features intriguing twists and multiple endings, it suffers from predictability and some underdeveloped plot points, leaving players wanting more depth. Overall, the game is praised for its engaging atmosphere and solid storytelling, making it a worthwhile experience for fans of story-driven first-person shooters.

    • “It belongs to a now nearly extinct genre — the linear, story-driven action shooter that just wants to tell a cool, self-contained story.”
    • “The story is good, the gameplay is fun, the environment is spooky, the guns were explained well, and the campaign is short enough you can get through it in a day or two.”
    • “Such an amazing game, the story is so good, all endings are amazing in their own way, the gameplay is fun, messing with time is well incorporated.”
    • “The story devolves into an incomprehensible mess as the majority of the game you get story from reading notes and someone radioing in your ear.”
    • “The narrative itself gets off to an intriguing start but fails to capitalize and then becomes rather dull as the generic storytelling gets tedious.”
    • “The story is a mess... it's all about time traveling, is filled with plot holes, does not make any sense and struggles with its own identity.”
  • gameplay
    1,014 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay of "Singularity" is characterized by its innovative time manipulation mechanics, which allow players to age, rejuvenate, or freeze objects and enemies, creating unique combat and puzzle scenarios. While the gunplay is satisfying and reminiscent of classic shooters like "Bioshock" and "Half-Life 2," the game suffers from linearity and a lack of depth in its mechanics, leading to a somewhat repetitive experience. Overall, it offers a solid, albeit short, FPS experience with engaging gameplay elements that are worth exploring, especially for fans of the genre.

    • “The gunplay is good but does have a sort of loose yet chunky feel (a bit like Bioshock in some ways) and the time manipulation mechanics allow for some interesting puzzle and combat moments.”
    • “✔ Original concept of time manipulation — the TMD (Time Manipulation Device) allows you to age, rejuvenate, or freeze objects and enemies, creating unique gameplay scenarios.”
    • “The gameplay blends traditional first-person shooter mechanics with the innovative time manipulation device (TMD), which Renko acquires early in the story, allowing players to manipulate time in various ways, such as aging enemies into dust, turning Soviet soldiers into creatures to attack their peers, simply slowing down/stopping time or restoring objects, to name a few.”
    • “Unfortunately, the last hour or so of gameplay falls pretty flat because they just don't introduce anything noteworthy.”
    • “From the half-baked special combat mechanics to the ham-fisted storytelling, you get a bundle of interesting ideas stunted by half-hearted execution.”
    • “The gameplay is not as special as the creative mechanics and the spectacle of its key moments.”
  • graphics
    458 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The graphics of the game, while dated by modern standards, are generally praised for their artistic style and atmospheric design, particularly considering its 2010 release. Many reviewers note that the visuals still hold up reasonably well, with some appreciating the unique aesthetic reminiscent of titles like BioShock and Half-Life. However, there are criticisms regarding the lack of advanced graphical options and occasional graphical errors, which can detract from the overall experience.

    • “For a game that came out in 2010, its graphics still hold strong today, making it still visually appealing.”
    • “The graphics are surprisingly good for a game this old, but the engine runs great.”
    • “The graphics are gorgeous, especially for a game of its generation.”
    • “The graphics do not hold up very well, but almost everything else about the game does.”
    • “The graphics are definitely two generations ago at this point, but the story and gameplay hold up very well.”
    • “The graphics have not aged well; it definitely looks like a 2010 game.”
  • atmosphere
    227 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The atmosphere of "Singularity" is widely praised for its immersive and haunting qualities, drawing comparisons to iconic titles like "Bioshock" and "Metro 2033." Reviewers highlight the game's dark, industrial environments, effective use of audio logs, and a compelling narrative that enhances the overall experience. While some note that the visuals can feel repetitive, the combination of eerie sound design and a rich backstory creates a captivating atmosphere that keeps players engaged throughout.

    • “The atmosphere and aesthetics are excellent, and the story is unique and genuinely intriguing - something that would work great as a miniseries or a novel.”
    • “The atmosphere is phenomenal, both audio and visual.”
    • “The atmosphere and general ambiance of this game are fantastic and eerie, creating a great environment for a gamer to feel right on edge.”
    • “The atmosphere is creepy and unsettling, but let down somewhat by monotonous visuals (how much concrete and rusted metal do you need to look at?) and by occasional balancing issues; sometimes the monsters are tough and you're getting by on low ammo, which suits the tone, and sometimes you're full of ammo and it's just a turkey shoot, which doesn't, really.”
    • “Two things that ruin the atmosphere though are the sudden shutting and locking of doors behind you for no apparent reason and the sudden spawning of enemies that were nowhere to be found a second ago, even though you searched every inch of the place.”
    • “The atmosphere in some bits is pretty oppressive, though I think they could have taken better advantage of that than they did.”
  • music
    85 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The music in the game is generally described as atmospheric and fitting, enhancing the eerie and immersive experience, though opinions vary on its memorability. While some tracks effectively build tension and complement the gameplay, others are criticized for being generic and overwhelming, often drowning out dialogue. Overall, the soundtrack serves its purpose but lacks standout pieces, leading to mixed reviews regarding audio mixing and volume balance.

    • “The game's soundtrack is also noteworthy, with a mix of atmospheric and action-oriented tracks that help to build tension and create a sense of urgency.”
    • “Awesome game mechanics, fun weapons, immersive world, phenomenal story, and top-notch soundtracks.”
    • “The music suits the game quite well, and the game keeps jumpscares to a minimum.”
    • “The soundtrack is mostly pretty forgettable; there are a few decent tracks, but most of it is very generic and forgettable action tracks.”
    • “I was unable to hear a lot of the dialog because it was much quieter than the music and sound effects.”
    • “Like most generic shooters, the music keeps playing even after the action has stopped.”
  • replayability
    53 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Overall, the game's replayability is generally considered low, with many reviewers noting a short campaign and limited incentives to replay, such as a lack of multiplayer and minimal variations in gameplay. While some players appreciate the presence of multiple endings and different choices, the linearity and lack of significant upgrades or challenges diminish the overall replay value. A few reviews highlight enjoyable aspects that could encourage a second playthrough, but most agree that it is primarily a one-time experience.

    • “The game also has a lot of replay value, as the player can access new areas, learn new skills, and reveal more of the story as they progress.”
    • “Tons of replay value on this game, with three possible endings, one of them being hidden.”
    • “If you want a solid, atmospheric, highly replayable 7-hour campaign, look no further.”
    • “Only worth checking out on sale as the campaign is short and offers no replay value; the multiplayer is also long dead, so no value there.”
    • “Unfortunately, the campaign is pretty short and there's little replay value, so I recommend buying this game when it's on a 50-75% sale.”
    • “As it stands, there is virtually no replayability value, unless you simply want to play through it on a harder difficulty.”
  • stability
    34 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Overall, the game's stability is generally praised, with many players reporting smooth performance on various platforms, including Steam Deck and Windows 10, and minimal bugs or glitches during gameplay. However, some users experienced occasional freezes when reloading checkpoints and minor audio issues, indicating that while the game is mostly stable, there are a few inconsistencies that could affect the experience. Despite these minor drawbacks, the game's performance is considered solid, especially for its age.

    • “Runs great on Steam Deck.”
    • “The game runs great and looks great for pushing 6 years old.”
    • “Great mechanics, awesome story, and it runs great!”
    • “However, there's an odd issue when reloading a checkpoint after dying: the game freezes for a few seconds, making it seem like it’s about to crash before resuming normally.”
    • “The game is at least a little buggy; I had it freeze on me just by reading a note.”
    • “No bugs to report on my playthrough, however I did at certain points get 10 second freezes (around 6 or so in complete playthrough); however, that could be a problem on my end as easily as it was the game's.”
  • optimization
    33 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's optimization is generally well-received, with many players reporting smooth performance and high framerates, even on mid-range hardware. However, some users experienced occasional stuttering and issues with controller prompts, while others noted that the default field-of-view is locked, which can induce motion sickness. Overall, while the game runs well and looks good, there are inconsistencies in optimization, particularly for modern hardware and user interface elements.

    • “The game is well optimized, the graphics are good, the story is great, the plot is great, it has some cool characters, it leaves you on a rollercoaster of emotions and it certainly deserves a sequel.”
    • “I saw some people saying it runs badly, but it is one of those games that was completely polished and well optimized; I could reach 120fps (it doesn't have an fps limit as most games out there), and my PC is kind of mid-range: i5 2400 3.10GHz, 8GB RAM, Windows 7 64-bit and a GTX 650 1GB.”
    • “The performance of the game is pretty stellar, I mean it's smooth (max @1080p, 8x AA, 16x AF, 4x SSAA transparent surfaces) kept a constant 60 fps (minus one or two areas, not noticeable to 99% of gamers out there).”
    • “Before even getting into the core components, optimization needs to be discussed because despite this game coming out over a decade ago, it is extremely inconsistent with how it runs.”
    • “The game is not optimized for modern hardware or even the PC in general.”
    • “Admittedly, it is well-optimized for high framerates on average hardware (probably because of its tiny texture sizes and weak rendering, even for 2010), but the default field-of-view is locked at 65 degrees, which is motion sickness inducing even for a console gamer sitting too close to the TV.”
  • humor
    32 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The humor in the game is characterized by a mix of intentional comedic elements and unintentional hilarity, often stemming from absurd gameplay mechanics and quirky character interactions. Reviewers appreciate the "so bad it's good" quality of the writing and voice acting, particularly noting the amusing Russian accents and the over-the-top nature of certain scenes. Overall, the game successfully blends humor with its action, creating a lighthearted experience that keeps players entertained despite its flaws.

    • “The dooggadoogga on this is sublime up there with Fear 1 and alike; there are different choices of time manipulation. My favorite is the time dilation bubble, but aging them until their brittle bones clunk harmlessly on the floor is also pretty funny.”
    • “There’s a good variety of enemies too with different abilities, and the game is funny in a classic, so bad it's good kind of way.”
    • “The story is hilariously bad, full of holes and poor twists, and things that are brought up only to be immediately dropped ten minutes later, if the plot remembers it exists at all.”
  • grinding
    12 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Overall, players have mixed feelings about the grinding aspect of the game. While some appreciate the steady progression of story and abilities that keeps the experience engaging, others find the gameplay repetitive and tedious, particularly after extended playtime. The narrative's lack of depth and the occasional need to repeat sections contribute to a sense of grind for some users.

    • “You'll need a second life for grinding.”
    • “Honestly, the gameplay was somewhat grindy and repetitive.”
    • “Now after playing it 3 hours it feels a bit grindy.”
    • “The narrative itself gets off to an intriguing start but fails to capitalise and then becomes rather dull as the generic storytelling gets tedious.”
  • emotional
    7 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Reviews highlight a mixed emotional experience in the game; while some players felt a lack of emotional investment due to the absence of contextual weight and meaningful storytelling, others reported strong emotional reactions, particularly at the game's conclusion. The gameplay's engaging mechanics and pacing seem to balance out the emotional disconnect for some, leading to moments of genuine emotional response.

    • “Ah, the rare 'emotional machine gun' genre.”
    • “Its mix of time-related abilities and fantastic gunplay still works surprisingly well, while the game's pacing has not for a moment made me feel bored.”
    • “I cried.”
    • “I cried at the end.”
  • monetization
    7 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The monetization aspect of the game is praised for its absence of intrusive microtransactions and loot boxes, offering a pure gaming experience reminiscent of earlier titles. However, the lack of advertising and promotional support has hindered its visibility and potential success, leaving it underappreciated despite its quality.

    • “Unfortunate for the developer Raven, Activision sent this solid gem to die at retail with no advertising support, and so the game was relegated to obscurity.”
    • “In a world where comparable shooters would have microtransactions thrown in or loot boxes shoved into your face, this game is a refreshing callback to the time when games were just games and nothing more.”
    • “It's one of those games that falls under any radar because of a lack of advertising and buildup to its release, a bit like Metro 2033.”
  • character development
    3 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Character development in the game is described as progressive and linear, with players facing increasing obstacles and gaining weapon upgrades, including elemental weapons and a time manipulation device. While the characters possess strong personalities, their designs are considered generic, which some players find acceptable given the engaging story.

    • “The story is linear, so character development is progressive. The obstacles increase each time one advances, and as a shooting game, we have weapon upgrades to combat Demichev's forces, Soviet soldiers of the past, and mutations of the present.”
    • “The characters themselves have great personalities, which keeps you engaged in the story, even if their designs feel a bit generic.”
    • “In terms of actual character design and appearance, everyone felt very generic. This is somewhat acceptable as the story itself is a big enough draw to keep you going, rather than the characters, who have great personalities but terrible designs.”
    • “The character development feels shallow and lacks depth, making it hard to connect with them on any meaningful level.”
    • “While the characters have potential, their arcs are poorly executed, leaving them feeling one-dimensional and unmemorable.”
