The gameplay of "Scavengers" is characterized by a mix of PvE and PvP elements, featuring unique mechanics such as a dynamic weather system and survival aspects like hunger and cold management. While many players appreciate the innovative concepts and engaging mechanics, others criticize the game for its repetitive gameplay loop, unbalanced matchmaking, and issues with performance and bugs. Overall, the game shows potential but requires further refinement and balancing to enhance the player experience.

    • “The game features a dynamic weather system and day-night cycle, adding depth and challenge to gameplay.”
    • “With its evolving gameplay and engaging mechanics, it's a game worth exploring for fans of survival and multiplayer shooters.”
    • “Great gameplay love pve and pvp combined”
    • “Good idea, bad execution; gameplay is pretty underwhelming and also very rough.”
    • “Game runs bad, boring gameplay, good movement, alright gunplay, just boring overall.”
    • “Gameplay is repetitive and graphics look like PlayStation 3 graphics.”
  • optimization
    432 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's optimization has received overwhelmingly negative feedback, with players reporting frequent stuttering, frame drops, and lag, even on high-end systems. Many reviewers noted that the game feels poorly optimized for both low and high settings, leading to a frustrating experience that detracts from its potential. While some improvements have been acknowledged, the consensus is that significant work is still needed to enhance performance and stability before it can be considered fully playable.

    • “Performance got a lot better.”
    • “Fun game that still needs a bit of optimization but has a lot of potential.”
    • “Great game and it will be better if they can solve bugs, crashes, and optimization problems.”
    • “This game is horribly optimized, most fights just freeze up completely or utterly tanks my frames.”
    • “Not only is this game the least optimized piece of software I've ever played (and I played PUBG on release), but the glitches, bugs, broken maps, rendering issues, crashing, and audio sync issues (to name just a few) entirely break the experience.”
    • “The performance is terrible and at points it is utilizing less than 40% of my GPU & CPU.”
  • graphics
    372 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The graphics of the game receive a mixed reception, with many players praising the stunning visuals, particularly in snowy environments, and noting that they are of AAA quality. However, several reviews highlight significant optimization issues, leading to frame drops and performance problems even on high-end PCs. Overall, while the art style and graphical fidelity are appreciated, the game's performance and optimization require further improvement.

    • “I put in 13.8 hours total, this game is one of the best games I've ever played; the visual treatment, snow and weather, graphics are mind-blowing.”
    • “Seriously, don't pass on giving it a shot from the mixed reviews; the core gameplay loop is phenomenal, and the graphics are also AAA quality, which I was not expecting when I first got it.”
    • “The graphics are great, a few frame drops here and there, but you can live with that; in fact, it's still in early access.”
    • “Gameplay is repetitive and graphics look like PlayStation 3 graphics.”
    • “Game is a strobe light sim because of the graphical issues; I literally have an Nvidia 3080 and it feels like I'm about to have a seizure.”
    • “Really poorly optimized, glitching graphics, stuttering blurry mess when in battle.”
  • grinding
    198 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The grinding aspect of the game is heavily criticized, with players noting that it requires excessive time and effort to progress, often feeling tedious and unrewarding. Many reviews highlight a significant imbalance where experienced players, who have invested more time in grinding, dominate new players, creating a toxic environment. While some players find enjoyment in the grind, the overwhelming consensus is that the game is too grindy, detracting from the overall experience and making it less accessible for casual gamers.

    • “The extraction is the hardest part of the game, sure, but this is no farming simulator.”
    • “A bit grindy... sometimes.”
    • “One long, tedious grind.”
    • “The progression system is very grindy, only the first tutorial match or two will give you an abundance of crafting materials; after that, my play experience averaged about 1 item per match to break down into ingredients for research projects, with some matches awarding nothing even though I extracted.”
    • “Overall this system creates a toxic environment where the rich get richer, and being a new player is absolutely not worth it - you will be scrapping for breadcrumbs filled with bad RNG to maybe unlock some things to even begin to stand a chance against teams decked out in epic/legendary gear who will not only beat you with bigger experience, but also better, more specialized gear and faster farming which allows them to hit endgame earlier.”
    • “If you want to spend hours grinding just to craft simple items and walk across hundreds of meters of snow with nothing to shoot at, this is the game for you.”
  • story
    168 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's story is often criticized for being underdeveloped, with many players expressing a desire for a more engaging narrative and cooperative PvE elements rather than the current battle royale format. While some appreciate the lore and character design, they feel that the gameplay primarily focuses on mechanics rather than storytelling, leading to a lack of depth in the overall experience. Players hope for future updates to expand the story and introduce more varied missions, as the current content feels repetitive and lacking in substance.

    • “The characters were also so well designed and balanced for the most part, and even with hundreds of hours in it, it never got boring. I was looking forward to learning more about the story considering there's the Ark 1 wreck.”
    • “I was very surprised at how good this game was in early access; everything from the graphics to the story is brilliant!”
    • “I enjoyed the map for what it was mostly, but I do wish or hope they implement a backstory with some depth into why the world has gone to hell in a handbasket because it seems like I could really get into the lore of the game for the most part.”
    • “☑️ this game has no story”
    • “The 'story' literally makes no sense, the netcode is absolute dogshit, and cheaters, because of course there are.”
    • “Not much is happening the entire game aside from you running around and doing boring missions and shooting creeps.”
  • stability
    146 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's stability is a mixed bag, with many players reporting significant bugs, glitches, and performance issues typical of early access titles. While some users find the game enjoyable despite these problems, others describe it as extremely buggy and poorly optimized, leading to frequent freezes and crashes. Overall, while there is potential for improvement, the current state of stability is a major concern for many players.

    • “Yes, it's early access so there's lots of room to improve, but the current release isn't buggy. Servers haven't had issues since launch day, and there's no way to buy an advantage in the store right now.”
    • “No glitches.”
    • “Yes, it's early access so there's lots of room to improve, but the current release isn't buggy. Servers haven't had issues since launch day, and there's no way to buy an advantage in the store right now.”
    • “This game isn't playable because no matter what you have your setting at, the game freezes.”
    • “The game is extremely buggy, more so than any other beta game I've played before.”
    • “Not only is this game the least optimized piece of software I've ever played, but the glitches, bugs, broken maps, rendering issues, crashing, and audio sync issues entirely break the experience.”
  • monetization
    70 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The monetization strategy of the game has drawn mixed reviews, with many players expressing frustration over the implementation of microtransactions and concerns about potential pay-to-win mechanics. While some acknowledge that microtransactions are typical for free-to-play games, others feel that the current model leans towards a cash grab, particularly with in-game purchases affecting gameplay progression. Overall, players are wary of the game's future monetization direction, hoping for a focus on cosmetic items rather than gear and character progression.

    • “It's okay for a free-to-play game to have microtransactions and a store full of paid content/DLCs.”
    • “At the time of making this, there are no microtransactions, which is outstanding for a free-to-play game.”
    • “The other main problem aside from the meatgrinder effect is that the devs do not reward you with chips like they used to since they implemented in-game purchases for the chips; they have reduced the amount you can win in-game by way too much.”
    • “One thing that worries me is the near predatory monetization which almost fully focuses on gear and character progression rather than skins and other cosmetics.”
    • “Although this game has potential, right now in its current state it's boring, repetitive, incredibly generic and has some seriously concerning probable future microtransactions and horrendous mobile waiting time tactics.”
  • atmosphere
    34 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The atmosphere of the game is widely praised for its unique and visually appealing design, reminiscent of titles like Generation Zero and Borderlands, featuring icy abandoned worlds and post-apocalyptic structures. However, some players express frustration with performance issues and the impact of pay-to-win mechanics on the overall experience, which can detract from the enjoyment of the atmosphere. Despite these concerns, many find the combination of battle royale and survival elements to create an engaging and entertaining environment.

    • “This game has a very unique atmosphere to it in many ways, whether that be noticeable when running through the icy abandoned world it is set in or even through the amazing, post-apocalyptic structures that are carefully spread across the world. It also has a great design to it with the UI and heroes having this futuristic and scientifically advanced equipment only to be used by going into a lonely, alien-filled world only to come back up by battling it out on an amazingly crafted spaceship.”
    • “Game is visually appealing in my opinion, with a nice atmosphere, fun and entertaining combat. It's nice to play a battle royale that also has some PvE aspects.”
    • “The atmosphere of this game feels like a weird mix of Apex and Outriders, but with an approach to the genre like Hunt: Showdown in its PvPvE style.”
    • “Matchmaking places you against players who have been playing since release, and due to the fact you can unlock stronger weapons and loadouts based on how much time you've played, this creates an extremely frustrating atmosphere for players who are only just learning the game.”
    • “The overall atmosphere and gameplay are bland and just boring.”
    • “Let's see what makes this game unique: battle royale (mostly sucks), winter atmosphere with heat and food features (Darwin's Project and survival games). The game says it's sandbox, but the only sandbox part about it is the stolen game designs that have been forced together into this game. Gameplay is like a mess, and the NPCs are the only thing that have any kind of brain compared to most of the teammates you will find.”
  • music
    32 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The music in the game has received mixed reviews, with some players praising the dramatic and epic soundtrack that enhances gameplay, particularly during intense moments like the final match. Others, however, found the music to be weak and uninspired, comparing it unfavorably to other titles. Overall, while some players consider the soundtrack memorable and engaging, others feel it detracts from the experience.

    • “The main theme of this game is one of my all-time favorite game soundtracks.”
    • “The music is so dramatic which leads to amazingly intense duels, mainly at the end of a match when the spaceship lands and all players flock towards it as the music picks up and different players strategize in different ways.”
    • “But this is a good step from the 'I loot for 80 percent of the game and then I get to a fight and die.' It's got good core mechanics and a soundtrack that reminds me of Interstellar.”
    • “Music is turned off entirely.”
    • “Music was boring and weak.”
    • “I love the executions though I love that, practically the only good thing I can say about this, music sucks too, style is trying to be Borderlands 2, it's bad, maybe give it some time but it's not good right now.”
  • humor
    30 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The humor in the game is frequently highlighted as a strong point, with many players finding it very funny, especially when playing with friends. However, the game's numerous bugs and glitches often lead to unintentional comedic moments, which some players find more entertaining than the gameplay itself. Overall, while the humor is appreciated, it is often intertwined with frustrations related to the game's mechanics.

    • “Deconstructing materials for a universal trade currency can be done, but the rate is hilariously bad.”
    • “The only good part about the game is my friend Donny kept falling through the world and it was hilarious.”
    • “Game is pretty funny and challenging at the end of each match.”
    • “Is it supposed to be funny that a game studio named after snow makes a game set in winter?”
    • “Is it supposed to be funny that a game studio named after snow makes a game set in winter?”
  • replayability
    12 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game is praised for its "infinitely replayable" nature, largely attributed to a robust crafting system that encourages players to revisit and experiment with different strategies. However, some users express a desire for optimization to enhance performance on medium-spec PCs.

    • “Infinitely replayable.”
    • “Infinitely replayable.”
    • “Good crafting system behind it that pushes replayability.”
  • character development
    4 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Character development in the game is criticized for its lack of depth, with users finding the character designs to be generic and unmemorable, making it difficult to distinguish between characters during gameplay. While the initial concept and art design show potential, they are ultimately undermined by uninspired gameplay mechanics.

    • “The character designs are boring as hell and it's impossible to tell them apart at range, so you have no idea who you're fighting.”
    • “The only thing good about this game is its interesting concept and art/character design, which are sadly ruined by generic and overwhelmingly bland gameplay, mechanics, movement, sound design, and pretty much everything else about this piece of early access garbage that tarnishes what it means to be a remotely enjoyable video game.”
  • emotional
    4 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Users perceive the game as emotionally resonant, attributing its wholesome design to the values of its creator, which reflects a strong Christian ethos. However, technical issues, such as control bugs, detract from the overall experience.
