  • story
    42 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's story and missions are generally seen as repetitive and lacking in depth, with some players finding them unengaging and grind-heavy. While there is a vast range of quests and co-op play that add to the experience, the narrative itself is not a strong point and often feels like a resource-gathering chore rather than a compelling storyline.

    • “Greatest strategy game I ever played, it's been online for years. The community is not huge but it's a strategy game after all. The storyline is fantastic. I have nothing negative to say about this game at all. I love the battles, it's so intense!”
    • “The MMO aspect of this game makes it appreciably more fun with a vast variety of repeatable missions that can all be played in 2-person co-op.”
    • “PvE - massive set of co-op friendly quests and quest chains for many hours of fun gameplay.”
    • “The game's storytelling and missions can be far from engaging and varied.”
    • “The quests can be interesting to completely boring.”
    • “Basically what I'm saying is that you either pay real money, fight other people tooth and nail, or grind quests for gold in order to buy new troops, which was the most disappointing thing ever to discover about this game.”
  • graphics
    26 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The graphics are widely regarded as outdated and lacking in quality, which detracts from the game's appeal, especially compared to modern standards. While some appreciate its nostalgic visual style and low hardware demands, many feel an update to the graphics and engine would significantly improve the experience. However, players often prioritize gameplay and atmosphere over the subpar visuals.

    • “The graphics have not aged well; they were already old-fashioned on release, but now you could look at any other RTS and have a prettier thing to look at.”
    • “I hope for new graphics and engine (and the game will be perfect :D). If you liked games like Shadow of the Horned Rat or Dark Omen, Saga is a game for you.”
    • “An overhaul of the graphics would make a huge difference, but I'm not sure if that's something that could be done with a game this old.”
    • “This has some fairly mediocre/dated looking graphics that will understandably be a turn off for a lot of gamers, and it's a big contributor to the failure of the game to attract gamers despite having no up-front cost.”
    • “The graphics have not aged well; they were already old fashioned on release, but now you could look at any other RTS and have a prettier thing to look at.”
    • “Feel free to turn all the graphical effects off though because they firstly look bad and secondly make the game harder because the foliage that the environment adds can cover up enemy units!”
  • gameplay
    16 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay is generally seen as simple and somewhat restrictive due to command point and level limits, with combat involving blocks of units rather than individual control. While some players find it slow and lacking excitement, there is a decent amount of cooperative PvE content and challenging PvP for those invested. Overall, the gameplay offers moderate fun but may feel outdated or underwhelming to others.

    • “The gameplay is similar to older style games in that most of your units are blocks of guys controlled all at once as opposed to singles.”
    • “The combat mechanics are okay, but the limitation by command points and levels is very restricting, especially in the beginning.”
    • “There is also PvP (which can be brutal if you go up against someone who knows the game really well), but there is a ton of gameplay and fun to be had in the PvP).”
    • “Boring and overly simple gameplay.”
    • “The combat mechanics are okay, but the limitation by command points and levels is very restricting especially in the beginning.”
    • “There are no bigger than 25 units so there is no 'total war style' combat anywhere, even though the mechanics are similar but underwhelming.”
  • grinding
    10 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Grinding in "Saga" is notably extensive and time-consuming, requiring players to invest significant effort in resource gathering and quest completion before accessing advanced units and spells. While free play is possible, progressing without paying involves long grinding sessions, often perceived as an uphill battle, with many players feeling compelled to spend real money to bypass this grind.

    • “The objective of this old relic is to give your credit card details to the developer so you can win without stupid amounts of grinding.”
    • “Just too grindy to get new units :(”
    • “First, while you can play this game for free with a few basic starting units and spells, to get more and the top units and spells especially, requires long, long periods of grinding to get gold to buy them with (this could take weeks, months, or years for the best units) or else buying the unit or spell cards with real money, or buying booster packs of cards with real money.”
  • music
    7 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The music in the game receives mixed feedback, with some users finding it good or even amazing, while others feel it is unfitting or overshadowed by poor sound effects. Overall, the soundtrack contributes positively to the atmosphere despite some audio shortcomings.

  • optimization
    3 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game exhibits persistent optimization issues, causing inconsistent performance even on high-end systems that exceed minimum specifications. Players experience unexpected slowdowns without error messages, indicating suboptimal handling across various machine configurations.

    • “You won't receive any error message, and if you are above and beyond the minimum specs, as you no doubt were even when the game originally came out, then it's even more baffling how unoptimized it is that even a high-end system can struggle to run it.”
    • “Strange performance issues still arise on certain machine configurations.”
    • “You won't receive any error message, and if you are above and beyond the minimum specs, as you no doubt were even when the game originally came out, then it's even more baffling how unoptimized it is that even a high-end system can chug along trying to run it.”
  • stability
    2 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game suffers from significant stability issues, including buggy PvP features and frequent texture glitches like disappearing water, which negatively impact the overall experience.

    • “Unlike most successful pay-to-win games, buying units does nothing; you can't even use them for PvP, which is buggy anyway!”
    • “There are numerous texture glitches, such as water disappearing.”
  • monetization
    1 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's monetization heavily relies on microtransactions, giving it a pay-to-win feel that detracts from its appeal as a free-to-play title. Many users feel the pricing structure diminishes overall value for gamers.

    • “On pricing and value for gamers, as mentioned this isn't really free as the game is infested with mobile app store-like microtransactions.”
