  • Fun and chaotic gameplay with lots of explosions and destruction.
  • Great graphics and a humorous, over-the-top story reminiscent of 80s action movies.
  • Variety of characters with unique abilities and a leveling system that adds replayability.
  • Controls are clunky and difficult to manage, especially with keyboard and mouse.
  • Frequent crashes and lack of checkpoints can lead to frustrating gameplay experiences.
  • Missions are often timed, which can detract from exploration and enjoyment.
  • story
    523 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The story of the game is largely viewed as a cliché, over-the-top narrative reminiscent of 80s action films, featuring a madman intent on world destruction and a team of heroes tasked with stopping him. While some players appreciate the comic book-style presentation and campy dialogue, many find the plot to be shallow and forgettable, serving primarily as a backdrop for the explosive gameplay. Overall, the story is entertaining in its absurdity but lacks depth, making it secondary to the action-oriented gameplay experience.

    • “The story is engaging and interesting.”
    • “The best part of it is the unique comic-style representation of the story and in-mission dialogues.”
    • “The over-the-top comic book story and deliberately hammed up voice acting is a lot of fun too.”
    • “The story is cliché and garbage, but the shoot-em-up parts are pretty good.”
    • “The story is very slight.”
    • “The story is paper thin, but let's be honest, if you're considering this game, it won't be for the plot.”
  • graphics
    247 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The graphics of the game have received widespread praise for their vibrant, colorful design and impressive detail, showcasing a comic book aesthetic that enhances the overall experience. Many reviewers noted that the visuals have aged well since the game's release, maintaining a high level of quality with smooth performance and engaging particle effects, particularly during explosive action sequences. However, some users experienced technical issues, such as glitches and compatibility problems, which occasionally detracted from the visual experience.

    • “The graphics are stunning.”
    • “The graphics still look good.”
    • “The visuals are beautiful, and the way that bad guys explode is top notch.”
    • “I could turn this jittering off if I disabled VSync, but this would sometimes cause background objects to not load into a level, and in mission 4 I even had the game not load a needed ramp into the graphics.”
    • “While the game holds up very well in the graphics department, it fails miserably at compatibility.”
    • “The graphics definitely have a console port look to them.”
  • gameplay
    232 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay of "Renegade Ops" is characterized by smooth mechanics, explosive action, and a visually appealing environment, making it an engaging experience for players. However, many reviews highlight issues such as repetitive missions, a lack of depth, and frustrating controls, particularly with vehicle handling. While the game offers fun cooperative play and a nostalgic arcade feel, its gameplay can become monotonous over time, and technical issues like crashes and difficulty spikes detract from the overall enjoyment.

    • “The gameplay is very explosive and action-packed; you get to upgrade your main attack twice during missions, and you also have a chance of finding a secondary weapon that varies from a flamethrower to a rocket launcher or a rail gun.”
    • “The gameplay is full of explosions and hilarity.”
    • “The gameplay is smooth and satisfying.”
    • “Unfortunately, the gameplay gets repetitive and dull very quickly, and the missions drag on way too long.”
    • “The whole experience feels flat and shallow because of the lack of gameplay depth.”
    • “Controls suck, gameplay sucks, you drive around firing the same things all the time, doing the same quests, again and again and again.”
  • replayability
    48 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's replayability is mixed, with some players finding value in leveling up multiple characters and achieving high scores, while others criticize its repetitive mechanics and limited content. Although there are elements like co-op play and character upgrades that enhance replay value, many reviewers feel that the overall experience lacks depth and variety, leading to a questionable long-term appeal. Overall, while some enjoy the replay aspects, others find them insufficient to sustain interest beyond a few playthroughs.

    • “Great game with lots of replayability to level up each character and it's good to cause carnage.”
    • “Surprisingly entertaining, the hard mode is actually hard, replayability guaranteed, very good for a 'class B' game, loved the comic vibe on cinematics, in general a good job worth your money.”
    • “Each mission takes around 20 minutes to complete and there's a lot of replay value in high scores and achievements for timed secondary objectives that have you find loot scattered around the map.”
    • “The replay value is questionable because the game is super repetitive and has very few game mechanics and level designs.”
    • “Despite there being four characters and an XP system, there is little real replayability value from bagging achievements and XP grinding.”
    • “No real replayability though.”
  • humor
    39 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The humor in the game is characterized by its over-the-top, campy style, featuring cheesy dialogue, explosive action, and self-aware moments that often lead to hilarious gameplay experiences, especially in multiplayer settings. While some players appreciate the comedic elements and nostalgic references, others feel that the humor can become repetitive or overly exaggerated. Overall, the game successfully blends absurdity with engaging action, making it a fun and entertaining experience.

    • “Hilariously stereotypical comic-book storyline.”
    • “Fast and furious action, some hilarious cutscenes, and some pretty nice graphics made it a real pleasure to play co-op.”
    • “The story of the game is pretty dumb, but in a very over-the-top self-aware way that makes it pretty damn funny.”
  • music
    33 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The music in the game is generally described as energetic and fitting for the action, though opinions vary on its memorability and impact. While some players appreciate the soundtrack's ability to enhance the gameplay experience, others find it forgettable or overshadowed by sound effects. Overall, the music is considered adequate but not exceptional, with some recommending alternative playlists for a more enjoyable experience.

    • “The soundtrack for 'Renegade Ops' perfectly complements the game's frenetic action.”
    • “With energetic tracks that intensify the atmosphere of combat, the music keeps the player immersed in the experience.”
    • “Graphically this game looks pretty decent as well as having a pretty dope soundtrack.”
    • “For an even better experience, turn off the in-game music and play your favorite classic rock albums!”
    • “The soundtrack is okay, but that's going to get drowned in 7 hours of non-stop machine gun sound effects.”
    • “The music is nondescript; it serves mostly as a backdrop for the constant sound of your guns going dakka-dakka-dakka.”
  • stability
    31 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's stability is highly inconsistent, with many players reporting frequent crashes, glitches, and freezing issues that disrupt gameplay. While some users have experienced smooth performance on platforms like Steam Deck, the overall consensus highlights a significant number of bugs and a lack of effective patches, leading to frustration and a diminished gaming experience. Despite its fun mechanics, the instability makes it difficult for players to progress, often forcing them to restart missions from the beginning.

    • “Runs great on Steam Deck using Proton Experimental, steady 90 FPS.”
    • “Runs great at 1440p.”
    • “This is for the local multiplayer; you can also play online with up to 4 players, which is really fun because it's bug-free and has neat features such as comparing your score and splitting each group to go do a mission, so it's great.”
    • “If your game crashes, glitches, or you simply lose, enjoy rewatching everything all over again as you start from the very beginning.”
    • “Too many bugs, very unstable... I spent one hour trying to pass the first stage and I can't because it always freezes and goes back to the OS... it's a shame since it looked fun, but I guess I'll never know.”
    • “However, it freezes for me and many others after mission select, and it amazes me how after all this time it hasn't been patched to work correctly.”
  • optimization
    9 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's optimization is mixed; while it runs smoothly and features polished visuals, users report significant issues with controls, particularly for keyboard and mouse, which are deemed unplayable by some. Performance is generally acceptable, but stuttering occurs during intense action, and many players recommend using a gamepad for a better experience. Overall, the lack of optimization for PC controls detracts from the gameplay enjoyment.

    • “Great optimization.”
    • “Runs smoothly, and there are many upgrades and a variety of characters to choose from.”
    • “+ Good performance.”
    • “The performance stutters a little when the action heats up.”
    • “Controls are not optimized for keyboard and mouse.”
    • “Zero optimization for PC.”
  • grinding
    8 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Players find the grinding aspect of the game to be repetitive and tedious, often requiring significant time investment to max out characters or rank up vehicles. While some suggest that co-op play can alleviate the monotony, many feel that the lack of meaningful rewards and replayability diminishes the overall enjoyment of grinding. Overall, the grinding experience is seen as a major design flaw that detracts from the game's appeal.

    • “You'll need a second life for grinding.”
    • “The game is too repetitive for grinding higher difficulties to feel gratifying.”
    • “There is, however, one major design misstep that's teeth-grindingly idiotic and hangs over the whole affair.”
    • “Despite there being four characters and an XP system, there is little real replayability value from bagging achievements and XP grinding.”
  • atmosphere
    5 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The atmosphere is characterized by an intense and immersive experience, reminiscent of classic 1980s action themes, with elements of command and conquer and dawn of war. The nonstop action, combined with energetic music and over-the-top villains, enhances the overall combat experience, keeping players fully engaged.

    • “The controls are smooth, the action is nonstop, and the atmosphere is so intense.”
    • “With energetic tracks that intensify the atmosphere of combat, the music keeps the player immersed in the experience.”
    • “The story and atmosphere is like a big slice of 1980s G.I. Joe with over-the-top villains, technobabble weaponry, and lots of explosions.”
    • “It gives an atmosphere of Command and Conquer and details of Dawn of War.”
    • “Adds a little more to the atmosphere.”
  • monetization
    4 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The monetization of the game is characterized by a lack of microtransactions, which is a positive aspect, but many users feel it suffers from limited content and a sense of abandonment post-launch. While the game includes humorous elements, some players find the repetitive nature of its monetization strategy detracts from its replayability. Overall, there is a sentiment that the game may have been designed primarily as a cash grab.

    • “There are no microtransactions, which is a refreshing change.”
    • “I appreciate that the game doesn't rely on microtransactions.”
    • “It's great to see a game that offers a complete experience without any microtransactions.”
    • “Great game, but there's very little content unless it's 75% off. Leave it alone; it could use a ton of new content. It looks like another forgotten title. Games should come with a warning: 'We don't intend on doing anything with this game after our initial cash grab.'”
    • “It can be funny, but it adds unwelcome repetition to an otherwise very replayable game.”
  • emotional
    3 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Players express a nostalgic emotional connection to the game, recalling childhood memories of play, but note that the short and easy campaign detracts from the overall experience, leading to a lack of engagement with the story.

    • “The gameplay is decent, but the story fails to evoke any real emotions.”
    • “I found the emotional depth lacking; it didn't resonate with me at all.”
    • “While the mechanics are solid, the narrative left me feeling disconnected and uninspired.”
