gameplay
2,204 mentions Positive Neutral NegativeThe gameplay of "Record of Lodoss War: Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth" is widely praised for its smooth mechanics and engaging combat, drawing strong comparisons to classic titles like "Castlevania: Symphony of the Night." Players appreciate the unique elemental switching mechanic, reminiscent of "Ikaruga," which adds depth to combat and puzzle-solving, although some feel it can make the game too easy. While the game is noted for its beautiful pixel art and music, many reviews mention its relatively short length (around 5-6 hours) and a lack of replayability due to limited secrets and upgrades.
“Great animations and music complement the polished game mechanics pretty well.”
“The game’s mechanics are smoother than an elf’s hair after a good conditioner, and the combat is as satisfying as finding the last piece of a jigsaw puzzle.”
“The gameplay mechanics are equally as impressive, blending classic 2D platforming with modern metroidvania elements to create a gameplay experience that's as challenging as it is rewarding.”
“The whole spirit level up mechanic + healing at level 3 + damage resistances are pretty cool so you can easily cheese anything in the game if you just keep switching to the correct spirit, so it's boring as hell.”
“Due to a lack of difficulty and mechanical depth, the game doesn't offer much in terms of replayability, which only makes some of the less favorable gameplay and control decisions stand out more.”
“The color matching mechanic is quite refreshing, but the gameplay is not fun; it actively punishes you brutally for every little mistake that you make, quickly becoming a game of 'play 100% perfectly or lose every single encounter.'”
Record of Lodoss War: Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth Review
Record of Lodoss War: Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth doesn’t take too long to beat — even the most curious/thorough/careful player is unlikely to go over the 10-hour mark — but when the adventure’s this much fun and as densely packed with creativity, does it matter? At the end of it all you’re far more likely to feel satisfied than short-changed, and Deedlit’s tale is a surprisingly touching one regardless of how much or little you already know about Lodoss. If you're after something with the flavour of Symphony of the Night that doesn't feel like a shallow knock-off, this is a fine alternative.
