Rebel Cops

All in all, Rebel Cops is a blast to play, and feels like a great modification to the This Is The Police formula. Everything feels right, the management is fun and challenging, the story is interesting enough, and there are no bugs or glitches that I have run into thus far.

Many reviews highlighted that the missions, while varied in setting, often feel disconnected from a meaningful plot, leading to frustration with the overall pacing and execution of the story.

  • gameplay
    187 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay of the game has received mixed reviews, with some praising its engaging turn-based mechanics and stealth elements, while others criticize it for being repetitive, tedious, and bogged down by poor design choices such as large maps and limited save options. Many players appreciate the strategic depth and character management, but feel that the overall experience is marred by frustrating RNG elements and a lack of meaningful progression. Overall, while the game offers enjoyable moments, it struggles with pacing and can become monotonous over time.

    • “If you are a fan of this gameplay style, the art style, and perhaps the story threads from the previous games from this developer, this is worth checking out.”
    • “The core gameplay is really gripping, and there were some moments where I was so immersed that I was about ready to call this one of my new favorite turn-based strategy games.”
    • “An incredible XCOM-esque turn-based strategy game with an interesting premise, intense and unforgiving stealth gameplay, and the option to go in guns blazing!”
    • “With the bad gameplay and level design, this is easily one of the worst functional games I've played.”
    • “The problem with Rebel Cops is that gameplay is very repetitive and becomes boring after the 3rd mission (which is the biggest and hardest in the game and takes 2+ hours to complete, by the way).”
    • “Gameplay is extremely repetitive (sneak, stun, arrest, repeat), due to brutal consequences of doing anything different.”
  • graphics
    58 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The graphics of the game receive mixed reviews, with many praising the art style as beautiful and fitting the game's narrative, while others criticize the visuals for lacking functionality and originality. Some players appreciate the detailed environments and stylized aesthetics, but note that the graphics can be repetitive and may not enhance the overall gameplay experience. Overall, the art style is a highlight for fans, but technical issues and gameplay frustrations detract from its appeal.

    • “The graphics, interface, and music are all great.”
    • “From a visual and storytelling perspective, Rebel Cops faithfully recreates the heavily stylized neo-noir atmosphere and the minimal, almost grotesque art style of the main series, and contains tie-ins to the second game that are executed to perfection.”
    • “Great graphics, models, and detail were put into the game, which can be appreciated well; it's a good time consumer.”
    • “Too repetitive, not that original, graphics didn't get me.”
    • “Crap story, crap gameplay, crap visuals, crap ending, crap all around!”
    • “While graphically pleasant, it lacks even basic functionality like rotating camera and hotkey configuration.”
  • music
    49 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The music in the game receives mixed reviews, with many players praising the soundtrack as one of its standout features, describing it as gorgeous and enjoyable, particularly during combat. However, some users criticize the in-mission music for being repetitive and discordant, leading to a lack of variety that can detract from the overall experience. Overall, while the soundtrack is celebrated by many, it also faces criticism for its limited selection and potential to become monotonous over time.

    • “The art, soundtrack, pacing, and style are all what I needed in my next game.”
    • “Amazing soundtrack, good art, and is pretty fun.”
    • “Love the soundtrack, gameplay, and the graphics.”
    • “The in-mission music is always heavily discordant after the intro mission, so far.”
    • “There isn’t any variety in the soundtrack and there aren’t many tracks either.”
    • “The soundtrack is repetitive and bland.”
  • grinding
    28 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The grinding aspect of the game has been widely criticized for being excessively tedious and repetitive, with players noting that the gameplay loop often devolves into monotonous tasks that lack excitement. Many reviewers expressed frustration over the slow pace, cumbersome mechanics, and the need for constant reloading, which detracts from the overall enjoyment. While some found redeeming qualities, the consensus is that the grinding elements significantly hinder the game's appeal.

    • “You'll need a second life for grinding.”
    • “This is probably the worst, most tedious game I've ever played in my entire life. After 5 hours on one mission, loading hundreds of times, it somehow loses my saves and wants me to replay the second mission over again. Such a dumb concept that nobody has done it in 50 years of gaming because it sucks.”
    • “The gameplay loop gets really tedious later on where it's just walk up, baton, arrest.”
    • “Arresting everyone along the way feels grindy and stops being fun less than halfway through.”
  • replayability
    7 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game suffers from limited replayability due to its lack of randomly generated content, resulting in a static experience after completing missions. While the unique maps and missions are well-crafted, players express disappointment over the minimal incentive to replay, primarily only for achievement hunting. Overall, many feel that previous titles in the series offered a more engaging and replayable experience.

    • “Overall, I enjoyed it, but wish it had random generation elements like XCOM to extend playtime or encourage replayability.”
    • “The only downside this game has is that there is very little replay value after you beat the game.”
    • “The missions are unique, with well-crafted maps, but unfortunately, since they are not randomly generated, it does limit replayability.”
    • “It has zero replay value and investigations are gone.”
    • “Unfortunately, not much replayability here other than achievement seeking.”
  • humor
    6 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The humor in the game is characterized by a strong presence of dark comedy, which resonates well with players, often eliciting chuckles through its satirical take on policing. The combination of interesting maps and the absurdity of rebel cops adds to the overall fun, making for a uniquely entertaining experience.

    • “Dark humor and interesting maps make for good fun.”
    • “You’re a bunch of rebel cops who continue being cops, arresting people... or you just knife everyone who looks at you funny.”
    • “The familiar sense of dark humor in this is the police is back.”
  • stability
    6 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's stability is inconsistent, with some players experiencing significant freezing issues, particularly during critical gameplay moments like reputation shifts and inventory management. While others report a generally smooth experience with minimal bugs, the presence of glitches and AI irregularities suggests that stability remains a concern for many users. Overall, the game has potential but is hindered by notable stability issues.

    • “I play on M1 hardware, and the game ran fine for 18 hours. Then I quit and tried to play again, continuing my save, and no matter what I do, it freezes 100% of the time when reputation shifts or I try to load a gun in a cop's inventory during the planning phase.”
    • “I want to like it, but it's buggy as hell.”
    • “There are some glitches, and the AI can be somewhat bipolar at times.”
  • optimization
    4 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The optimization of the game is a mixed bag; while it offers good playability for its price, users report significant performance issues, particularly when effects and particles are enabled, which can push even high-end setups to their limits. There is a consensus that with minor adjustments, the game could achieve much better optimization.

    • “Price-time performance: 100/85”
    • “Mission performances in XCOM-style turn-based tactical games go from perfect execution to complete disasters in an instant.”
    • “When we look at it in terms of playability and evaluate it in terms of price performance, I think it was quite successful, but I always ask, it seems possible to carry the game to a much deeper point with a few small touches.”
    • “For some reason, if the effects/particles are activated, it pushes my setup (i7 + RTX 3060) to 100%. For such a simple game, it doesn't seem optimized.”
  • atmosphere
    3 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The atmosphere in "Rebel Cops" is praised for its faithful recreation of a stylized neo-noir aesthetic, complemented by a minimalistic and grotesque art style. The setting effectively captures the tension of rural law enforcement facing off against gangsters, enhanced by a fall-themed environment that adds to the game's immersive storytelling.

    • “From a visual and storytelling perspective, Rebel Cops faithfully recreates the heavily stylized neo-noir atmosphere and the minimal, almost grotesque (fittingly so) art style of the main series, and contains tie-ins to the second game that are executed to perfection.”
    • “I liked the atmosphere: countryside cops having to improvise against gangsters that took over the town.”
    • “The weather and atmosphere evoke fall for some reason (leaves are blowing across the time?).”
    • “The weather and atmosphere feel off; it's fall for some reason, with leaves blowing across the time.”
    • “From a visual and storytelling perspective, the game faithfully recreates a heavily stylized neo-noir atmosphere, but it lacks the depth and immersion expected from the main series.”
  • monetization
    1 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The monetization strategy is perceived as transparent and aligned with the game's challenging yet enjoyable nature, effectively promoting its x-com style gameplay without misleading players.

    • “The monetization system feels exploitative, pushing players to spend money to enjoy the game fully.”
    • “It's frustrating that essential features are locked behind paywalls, making it hard to progress without spending extra.”
    • “The constant prompts to purchase in-game currency detract from the overall experience and make it feel more like a cash grab.”
