  • Simple and fun turn-based roguelike dungeon crawler with nostalgic pixel-art inspired graphics and music.
  • Offers good replayability due to procedural generated dungeons, variety of classes, and randomized loot and quests.
  • Accessible and easy to learn; suited for both newcomers and fans of classic roguelikes, with a moderate challenge especially on higher difficulties.
  • Gameplay can be too simple and repetitive, with limited depth and variety in enemies, loot, and story.
  • Balance issues with some bosses able to one-shot players, making some encounters feel unfair or dependent on luck.
  • Lacks modern quality-of-life features such as better controls, auto-explore, and save points; combat regeneration mechanics can encourage tedious grinding.
  • gameplay
    97 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay of Quest of Dungeons is a simple, turn-based roguelike focused on exploration, survival, and incremental character growth, offering a fair and consistent experience with moderate challenge and replayability. While some praise its accessibility, humor, and straightforward mechanics suitable for casual play or newcomers, many criticize it for lacking depth, variety, meaningful progression, and engaging combat complexity, leading to repetitiveness and limited long-term engagement. Overall, it delivers a solid but generic roguelike experience that may appeal more to players seeking relaxed and uncomplicated gameplay rather than those wanting intricate strategies or richly varied mechanics.

    • “Rather than overwhelming players with systems layered on top of systems, Quest of Dungeons focuses on a tight gameplay loop built around exploration, survival, and incremental character growth, making each run feel like a self-contained adventure shaped by both player choices and procedural unpredictability.”
    • “Gameplay unfolds on a grid-based, turn-driven system where every action matters.”
    • “Quest of Dungeons has an engaging design, great artwork, great music, a dash of humor, clever combat, and addictive gameplay.”
    • “The problem lies not with the randomization but the lack of content to actually be randomized, as every floor looks and feels the same, pretty much every enemy has the same nondescript melee attack, and the treasure hunting/equipment purchasing loop feels unrewarding due to just how little of an impact new weapons and armor have on the gameplay experience.”
    • “There are no cursed items, identification, skill points, synergies, non-attack skills, equipment trade-offs, puzzles, environment mechanics... anything but the most basic walking and attacking.”
    • “Mind-numbingly simple combat, completely forgettable character classes and art, possibly the most boring loot / player progression I've ever seen, and mechanics that were proven as broken in 1995.”
  • story
    95 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The story in Quest of Dungeons is minimal and largely serves as simple framing to motivate gameplay rather than providing depth or narrative intrigue. Reviews consistently note its lack of lore, characters, and meaningful plot, with quests often described as repetitive "fetch or kill" tasks. While the minimal storytelling approach complements the game's focus on gameplay and exploration, many players find the narrative underdeveloped and unengaging compared to other roguelikes.

    • “Rather than overwhelming players with systems layered on top of systems, Quest of Dungeons focuses on a tight gameplay loop built around exploration, survival, and incremental character growth, making each run feel like a self-contained adventure shaped by both player choices and procedural unpredictability.”
    • “This minimal narrative approach works well, as the true storytelling emerges organically through close calls, unlucky encounters, and moments where smart planning allows you to escape seemingly impossible situations.”
    • “The story exists mostly as framing, offering just enough motivation to push you forward without distracting from the mechanical heart of the game.”
    • “No story at all, almost no text or cutscenes.”
    • “One of them is the quest system - there are only two types of quest, "find something" or "kill the champion version of the regular mob", and doing them is nothing but boring.”
    • “Monsters are same (and can't really harm you, only bosses can), only two types of quests are available, no special gear to speak of, levels are repetitive and larger than they should be.”
  • graphics
    60 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The graphics are consistently described as simple, retro pixel art reminiscent of 16-bit or 8-bit styles, which some players find charming and nostalgic while others see as basic or unremarkable. The visual style effectively supports the game’s old-school atmosphere and suits its roguelike design, though it may not impress those seeking modern or highly detailed graphics. Overall, the graphics are appreciated for fitting the game's tone and enhancing its replayability despite their minimalism.

    • “Visually, the game leans heavily into a retro pixel-art aesthetic that evokes classic 16-bit era RPGs.”
    • “This is probably the best graphical roguelike I have ever played.”
    • “Graphically, the game delivers on everything its trailers promise.”
    • “Game is way too short, especially for 8 bit graphics with stock assets.”
    • “The graphics are very basic.”
    • “It uses the 16bit sprite pack from OryxLab so the graphics are nothing special either.”
  • music
    57 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The music in the game is generally praised for its retro, old-school style that complements the pixel art and creates a fitting ambiance, though some find it repetitive and limited in variety. Many players appreciate the soundtrack’s nostalgic and catchy qualities, while a few note it can feel oddly upbeat or out of theme for a dungeon crawler. Overall, the music enhances the game's atmosphere without overwhelming the gameplay, though additional tracks could improve the experience.

    • “Quest of Dungeons is an addictive little move/turn based game with a soundtrack that is absolutely fantastic.”
    • “I've beaten the game at least once with each class in the game by this point and the soundtrack is just incredible.”
    • “The atmosphere has a dirty feel to it, the music is great, everything about Quest of Dungeons is perfect.”
    • “Music is hella repetitive though.”
    • “The music is repetitive and oddly upbeat for a dungeon crawler.”
    • “Loses points for having "music" so repetitive I wanted to turn it off in less than 5 minutes of playing the game.”
  • humor
    39 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The humor in the game is generally lighthearted, witty, and nostalgic, adding charm and enjoyment to the gameplay, especially in the intro and dialogue. While some find it cleverly amusing and a pleasant complement to the roguelike elements, others feel the humor can be inconsistent or forced at times, particularly once inside the dungeon. Overall, it provides a fun and engaging flavor without taking itself too seriously.

    • “It's a roguelike game that you can easily lose 30 minutes to 2 hours in a run with its charming subplot humor that plays well with controllers.”
    • “The bad feelings come from my inability to stay alive (hah, I suck), but I can't even be frustrated when I die, as the smart humor and the appealing graphics just seem to make up for it right away - and in an addictive way.”
    • “Quest of dungeons has an engaging design, great artwork, great music, a dash of humor, a clever combat, and addictive gameplay.”
  • replayability
    26 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Replayability in the game is generally praised due to its procedural dungeons, multiple distinct classes, and varied difficulty levels, offering a fresh experience and strategic depth with each playthrough. While some find the randomization and permadeath mechanics rewarding and encourage repeated runs, others feel the game lacks lasting challenge or purpose, limiting its long-term appeal. Overall, it is considered highly replayable for fans of thoughtful turn-based roguelike gameplay, though it may not satisfy those seeking deeper complexity or extended engagement.

    • “These class distinctions add meaningful replay value, as the same dungeon layout can feel dramatically different depending on your chosen hero.”
    • “For players who enjoy thoughtful turn-based combat, procedural challenge, and retro aesthetics, it offers a highly replayable journey that rewards patience, planning, and curiosity.”
    • “Having multiple characters to choose from and procedurally generated weapons and dungeons give this game a ton of replayability.”
    • “It becomes a gigantic issue that ruins replayability.”
    • “After playing for a short time, the only thing I would suggest to add more replayability is to add some sort of purpose for doing these dungeons.”
    • “For me at least, I can see no further challenge and/or the need to play Quest of Dungeons again (soon), therefore offering little to no replay value.”
  • grinding
    16 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Grinding in the game is often described as tedious and repetitive, with players needing to invest significant time in preparing for challenging bosses that can easily one-shot them. Healing mechanics and slow progression exacerbate the monotony, making the gameplay feel like an endurance test rather than an engaging experience. Despite this, combat remains manageable, though the heavy grind can detract from overall enjoyment.

    • “Bosses are completely unbalanced; if you get hit by one, they can easily one-shot you. Progression is grindy, and once you get to the 5th floor, you're practically begging to stop playing the game.”
    • “Enemy encounters are extremely repetitive and trivial (at least in easy and normal settings), and it mostly just feels like you're grinding to prepare your character to face the boss, which can put a huge hurting on you even on the easiest difficulties.”
    • “This is unbearably tedious, but it's the "correct" way to play, especially since the game has no qualms with guaranteed boss monsters that two-shot you on the first floor.”
  • atmosphere
    6 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's atmosphere is praised for its immersive and well-balanced audio design, featuring unobtrusive music and sound effects that enhance the experience without distraction. The graphics contribute to a distinctive, sometimes gritty ambiance that complements the overall mood, while the storytelling elements help create a captivating and enjoyable environment. Overall, the atmosphere is described as engaging, fitting the game's tone and enhancing player immersion.

    • “The audio design follows a similar philosophy, with unobtrusive music and sound effects that enhance atmosphere without becoming distracting.”
    • “The graphics and their old appearance add to that great atmosphere.”
    • “Casual, simple, fun, nice atmosphere (music and sound really good imo).”
    • “And Fatal Labyrinth is still the better of the two games: it's longer, more balanced, less frustrating and annoying, it doesn't have the weird and even childish atmosphere and it has a 'continue' system (if you play it via the emulator that comes with the Sega Mega Drive Classics / Sega Genesis Classics collections, you can even save at any point).”
    • “The atmosphere has a dirty feel to it, the music is great, everything about Quest of Dungeons is perfect.”
  • character development
    3 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Character development is limited and lacks depth, with no meaningful customization or visible equipment changes. Players have no control over how experience levels affect their hero, resulting in a simplistic progression system that detracts from the overall experience.

    • “Even on easy mode, the imbalance in character design and unspecified threat levels of enemies tarnish the player experience.”
    • “Limited classes, limited character development, no visible equipment, simple combat, etc.”
    • “There is no character development - you gain experience that levels you up, but you have no influence on how it affects your hero.”
  • emotional
    1 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Users find the emotional aspect lacking, noting that the game fails to evoke meaningful feelings or engagement. The experience is described as emotionally flat, leaving players indifferent rather than moved.

  • monetization
    1 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The monetization is viewed as a low-effort, indie cash grab offering little value, with no engaging gameplay to justify spending.
