Quadrilateral Cowboy

Quadrilateral Cowboy could have been an amazing game; as it is, it’s merely great. It’s a heartfelt love letter to classic Neuromancer-esque cyberpunk that’s stylish and imaginative enough to get a pass as something you immerse yourself in—for the sake of experiencing its vignettes, or its minute world details, perhaps—but despite a lot of exciting ideas, the actual puzzles are a bit of a flop.

The gameplay in "Quadrilateral Cowboy" is characterized by its unique command-line hacking mechanics, allowing players to interact with the environment through coding-like commands to execute heists. While the game introduces a variety of innovative mechanics at a steady pace, many players feel that these elements are often underutilized or abandoned too quickly, leading to a sense of untapped potential. • graphics
    129 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The graphics of the game are characterized by a unique, minimalist aesthetic that blends retro-futuristic and cyberpunk elements, which some players find charming and atmospheric, while others criticize it as simplistic or lacking polish. Despite technical issues and a low-poly design, many reviewers appreciate how the visuals enhance gameplay clarity and storytelling, creating an engaging environment that complements the hacking mechanics. Overall, the art style is seen as a deliberate choice that adds to the game's quirky charm, even if it may not appeal to everyone.

    • “The atmosphere is amazing even with low poly graphics; maybe it's even better because of it.”
    • “The graphics are lo-fi, but endearing and detailed in their own way.”
    • “The simplistic graphics are dripping with style and intentionally focus gameplay on the puzzles and hacking mechanics, which are paced flawlessly.”
    • “I think the blocky, low-poly visuals and washed-out, muted colors look really awful, and I just don't buy the idea that a game can look 'good' by deliberately trying to look dated visually.”
    • “Graphics are bad, there's no story, hacking is superfluous and tools feel irritating and pointless.”
    • “Somehow despite the blocky minimalist aesthetic this game made my 1080 ti drop frames worse than Doom or any modern AAA game.”

    44 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The music in the game is widely praised for its beautiful and atmospheric qualities, effectively enhancing the overall experience with a mix of classical and early 20th-century tunes. While many players appreciate the unique combination of music and visuals, some feel that certain tracks do not fit the cyberpunk setting, suggesting a more atmospheric soundtrack could have been beneficial. Overall, the soundtrack is considered a significant aspect of the game's charm, contributing to its immersive world-building and emotional depth.

    • “I fell in love with this game from the first seconds of the opening scene, featuring a cyberpunk train robbery with Clair de Lune as background music.”
    • “The phonograph-style music combined with cyberpunk living a la Blade Runner made for a really cool combination.”
    • “The soundtrack consists of a handful of public domain tunes from the early 20th century (plus a recurring rendition of Clair de Lune) which the player can select from at any time, using a walkman-like portable record-player item.”
    • “If I had any complaints, they would be with the short length and soundtrack.”
    • “I have no issue with the music itself, I just don't think it fits the cyberpunk setting.”
    • “A more atmospheric soundtrack would be better here in my opinion.”

Overall, the game is celebrated for its captivating atmosphere that enhances the puzzle-heist experience, making it a standout title in the indie gaming scene.

    • “Although it is quite short (it's about 3-4 hours long) and the graphics won't blow you away in any sense of the word, the game is oozing atmosphere at every narrative and gameplay corner.”
    • “The whole atmosphere, the exploration, the puzzles, the characters, the visuals, the story, the weirdness... everything is perfect and fitting.”
    • “So far this game is unlike any other - the atmosphere is very off and different, almost creepy.”
    • “The story of Quadrilateral Cowboy has very little in the way of actual plot and is instead presented solely through environmental storytelling and atmosphere.”
    • “Short scenes between the heists are full of character, and succeed at creating an atmosphere of disempowerment, sending a message of solidarity in dire conditions and personal bonds subsisting through (and despite) overwhelming pauperization.”
  • humor
    24 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The humor in the game is described as sharp, unexpected, and often absurd, contributing to an enjoyable experience even during frustrating moments. Players appreciate the subtle and quirky comedic elements, likening it to a blend of wholesome and melancholic tones, with engaging cutscenes and a charming cast of characters. While some feel it lacks the consistent humor of similar titles like Jazzpunk, the overall vibe is fun and lighthearted, making it a delightful addition to the gameplay.

    • “In typical Brendon Chung fashion, the humor is sharp, genuinely funny, and usually unexpected or out of left field, making even the frustrating parts of the game pretty enjoyable.”
    • “The heists are absurd and hilarious, and the scenes between them are the highlight of the game.”
    • “I love the simplicity of the graphics, the humorous and cheesy but at the same time gritty and dangerous universe, and if you pay attention, for a game not exclusively about story, it's got a pretty good one.”
  • stability
    22 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game is frequently described as buggy and prone to crashes, with issues such as disappearing items, softlocks, and interface glitches significantly impacting the experience. While some players report a smooth experience, many others note that these stability problems can detract from gameplay, especially in later levels. Overall, the game's stability is a notable downside, with many reviewers expressing frustration over the frequency and severity of the bugs.

    • “It's also absolutely bug-ridden; I had at least ten crashes apparently caused by right-clicking to pick up objects.”
    • “Lastly, the game is also very buggy and glitchy; one of the worst games I’ve played for years in this regard, in fact.”
    • “I spent more time handling the glitches and poor game mechanics than I did actually thinking about how to solve the puzzles.”
  • replayability
    13 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's replayability is a mixed bag; while some players appreciate the potential for speedrunning and leaderboard competition, many criticize its short length and linear puzzles, which limit replay value. The lack of active modding and community content further diminishes replayability, although some still find enjoyment in revisiting the game for personal bests. Overall, it may appeal to those who enjoy time trials, but others may find it lacking in depth and variety for multiple playthroughs.

    • “Don't let the €20 price tag scare you away, this game has infinite replayability and is well worth the price.”
    • “I think this game is quite replayable as there are many ways to complete a heist, and you usually get 3 missions in 1 heist, so there's a lot of content.”
    • “Still absolutely loved what was there, and it's definitely replayable if you're into speedrunning.”
    • “Due to this being a short game with lower replayability and it being kind of dead for mods, I would say $20 is too high.”
    • “I would recommend getting it on sale due to the fact I got 100% completion in about 6 hours, and I don't see much replay value in it once you figure out the puzzles.”
    • “The only flaws with this game are that the missions are linear puzzles without much replayability (actually not any replayability at all unless you feel like getting more immersed in the gorgeous world or want to go for a better time on the arbitrary leaderboards) and the many crashes experienced during play.”
  • grinding
    7 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Players find the grinding aspect of the game to be largely tedious and annoying, often requiring repetitive setup for late-game puzzles that can feel finicky. Despite the frustration, some reviewers appreciate that this meticulous process contributes to a sense of accomplishment and mastery in executing heists efficiently. Overall, while the grinding can be off-putting, it is seen as a necessary part of the experience.

    • “When you fail to execute the way you intended, you have to set the whole thing up again -- e.g., set up the autocase (remote controlled rifle) pointing in the exact right spot by typing in a console and looking at the CCTV awkwardly -- and it felt quite tedious.”
    • “This usually isn't an issue, but some of the late game puzzles take a bit of setup to execute, and having to do it over and over can feel a little tedious.”
    • “At times the game's systems require tedious fiddling, but overall I would recommend it in a heartbeat.”
  • character development
    3 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Character development in the game is notably impressive given its lack of dialogue and minimalist art style, effectively conveying growth through gameplay mechanics. While the plot is straightforward, revolving around heists, the puzzles serve to enhance both world-building and character progression.

    • “The puzzles aren't super difficult nor have multiple ways to solve them, but they really function more for world building and character development.”
    • “I can sum up the entire plot and character development with 'do heist, get paid.'”
    • “The fact that they were able to have any sort of character development in a game with zero dialogue and such minimalist art is pretty impressive to me.”
  • optimization
    3 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game features a solid concept but suffers from significant optimization issues, leading to performance problems that detract from the overall experience. Despite these shortcomings, some players remain hopeful due to the potential for modding, which may enhance performance in the future.

    • “Normally, a performance like this in any game would make me downvote easily, but the reason why I'm okay with how it panned out is the one little mods folder on the menu screen.”
    • “Is coding a slow crawl of engineering, or can it be a light and delicate performance, like cold water or a kiss?”
    • “Good game concept, etc., but like people say: way too short, and my critique: poorly optimized.”
    • “Normally a performance like this in any game would make me downvote easily, but the reason why I'm okay with how it panned out is the one little mods folder on the menu screen.”
