About

Pester is a single player shooter game with a science fiction theme. It was developed by Flump Studios and was released on August 21, 2015. It received neutral reviews from players.

A blast from Flump Studios past! Pester was released on Xbox live indies back in early 2013 and was Flump Studios first game developed for public release. A remake of one of my early C64 games, Pester is a very fast paced and busy retro vertical shooter.

  • Authentic retro arcade shoot 'em up experience with focus on challenge, score chasing, and skill-based gameplay.
  • Simple and clean mechanics that appeal to shmup purists valuing precise movement, shooting, and pattern recognition.
  • Configurable music, backgrounds, sprite sets, and gameplay modifiers that add some replay value and personalization.
  • Controls and collision detection feel imprecise and unforgiving; input lag and rough movement hinder enjoyment.
  • Visuals are generally low resolution or blurry with poor sprite scaling, making it hard to distinguish bullets and enemies especially in intense moments.
  • Lacks modern quality-of-life features like checkpoints, difficulty scaling, fullscreen options, or robust content—resulting in repetitive, grindy gameplay with little variety.

    17 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

"Pester" offers a pure, retro-inspired vertical scrolling shooter experience with clean, traditional mechanics that appeal to genre purists seeking skill-driven gameplay. While its minimalist design and adjustable settings add some variation, repetitive enemy patterns and lack of content may limit long-term engagement. The game is praised for nostalgia and challenge but criticized for loose hitboxes, limited polish, and low replayability.

    • “Gameplay in pester is built around traditional vertical scrolling shooter design, with the player controlling a lone ship at the bottom of the screen while waves of enemies flood in from above.”
    • “This purity of design is one of the game’s defining traits, appealing strongly to genre purists who value clean mechanics and clear cause-and-effect gameplay.”
    • “For players who crave intense, skill-driven gameplay and enjoy the satisfaction of mastering demanding patterns through persistence, pester offers a compact but authentic experience.”
    • “The lack of variety in enemy behaviors and the absence of distinct gameplay modes can make extended play sessions feel repetitive once patterns are mastered.”
    • “The core shoot-em-up mechanics fall short of their goal, leaving this game in bullet purgatory due to a lack of polish.”
    • “The gameplay itself has little value; just a generic vertical shmup with loose hitboxes.”
  • music
    14 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The music features electronic and techno-inspired tracks that effectively enhance the arcade-style urgency and nostalgia, though some find it repetitive and limited in volume control options. Players appreciate the ability to choose and customize music and backgrounds, but wish for more variety or randomization. Overall, the soundtrack is considered fitting and enjoyable, especially given the game's low price.

    • “The soundtrack leans heavily into electronic and techno-inspired rhythms that drive the pace forward and heighten the sense of urgency.”
    • “Retro shmup with basic gameplay and cool music that emits nostalgic vibe.”
    • “Techno-grumble style music makes it feel like an arcade game, and for $0.99 this is a huge deal and a fun time passer.”
    • “Also, the music volume settings for some reason are not saving for me, so every time I start this game again I need to go to options and turn it down.”
    • “Music way too loud.”
    • “You can only change the music volume between 0-10.”
  • graphics
    10 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The graphics receive mixed feedback, with some praising the remastered retro style for its clarity and visual consistency, while others criticize the visuals as muddy, blurry, and poorly executed. The option to switch between old-school pixel art and modern sprites is appreciated, though the newer graphics are often seen as inferior. Overall, the graphics support gameplay but lack polish and visual appeal for some players.

    • “Visually, Pester embraces a remastered retro aesthetic that balances nostalgia with clarity.”
    • “While the art style does not aim for flashy spectacle, it succeeds in maintaining visual consistency and focus, which is crucial for a game where split-second reactions determine success or failure.”
    • “You can also select music, backgrounds and graphics between old school and new.”
    • “Cheap bullet hell shooter with basic modes, muddy visuals, imprecise controls and frustrating invisible bullet issues.”
    • “The controls are rough, the visuals are horrible.”
    • “I prefer old school, because I can see the pixel graphics versus the new sprites that look muddy, dark and blurry because they're stretched.”
  • optimization
    2 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game emphasizes player skill over complex build optimization by keeping its arsenal straightforward. This approach, combined with score tracking and achievement goals, promotes replayability and encourages players to refine their performance through experimentation and competition.

    • “Rather than layering in complex weapon systems or elaborate power-up trees, Pester keeps its arsenal relatively straightforward, placing emphasis on player skill rather than build optimization.”
    • “These options, along with score tracking and achievement-style goals, encourage replayability and experimentation, particularly for players who enjoy refining their performance and competing against themselves or others.”
  • replayability
