Palais de Reine

Palais de Reine is a wholly unique and fascinating experience. I very much appreciate that it not only exists, but is available in English. And yes, once I finished an initial (disastrous) run and came back better prepared, I thoroughly enjoyed myself. There’s an incredible amount of depth and nuance. However, getting to it involves an investment only the most dedicated might commit to.

    26 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The story of the game is noted for its potential but suffers from choppiness and a lack of completeness, leaving some players feeling disconnected from the outcomes. While the integration of character backstories and branching narratives adds depth, the complexity and grindy nature of the gameplay can detract from the overall experience. Despite these issues, many players appreciate the well-developed characters and engaging plot, making it a recommended choice for fans of otome games.

    • “The art, music, characters, story, setting, and mechanics are charismatically intertwined into this masterpiece.”
    • “I found the gameplay and storytelling extremely interesting, and it helps that although there are 7 main love interests, you can have scenes with and feasibly have an ending with all of the other characters in the game - and though I didn't count them, that's more than 30 characters with interesting and well-developed stories.”
    • “What I really liked about this game was how well the different characters are integrated into the story and how it will affect it.”
    • “The story had a lot of potential, but it was rather choppy, confusing, and incomplete.”
    • “In the end, she could pick whichever she desired, but the story came across as choppy and incomplete.”
    • “However, the story was fairly complex with a lot of cut scenes.”
  • gameplay
    13 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Gameplay in this title is a mix of strategic decision-making and narrative exploration, offering players multiple routes and significant consequences based on their choices. While the balance between story and gameplay is praised, some users noted issues with repetition and initial confusion without guidance. Overall, it is recommended for those seeking an otome game with engaging mechanics, despite some minor gameplay glitches and distractions.

    • “I really enjoyed this game; I have ADHD and I love visual novels with some strategy or gameplay aspects, be it a schedule, tactics, or something else, with multiple routes.”
    • “All in all, I found the story and gameplay parts well-balanced.”
    • “Strategic gameplay, where you get to make small decisions (both based on character movement around a map and dialogue options), that can add up to significant consequences and different endings.”
    • “Was pumped up to play it and only got about an hour of gameplay before it glitched, and then my PC said I must not play it since it's infected with a virus.”
    • “In the end, these little nitpicks distracted me too much from the gameplay.”
    • “With this one, however, I don't want to go through the repetitive gameplay over and over to do that.”
  • replayability
    10 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game offers high replayability due to its extensive roster of characters and multiple endings, encouraging players to explore different choices and paths. Many users note that a single playthrough is insufficient to experience all the content, making it particularly appealing for completionists. Overall, the variety of routes and unlockable scenes significantly enhances the game's replay value.

    • “Basically, it's endlessly replayable because your choices give you quite a different experience, and you constantly get new content, unlocking new scenes by taking different paths to power.”
    • “Palais de reine offers a lot of options for its player and along with that, high replayability if the player aims to see every route and ending.”
    • “One playthrough is definitely not enough to experience everything this game can offer, so there is great replayability as well.”
    • “I only finished my first playthrough (and lord what a mess it was, but I pulled through!), but this is definitely worthy of replaying to get all scenes and endings with a huge roster of characters.”
    • “- Replayable chapters are mostly locked until you reach the character ending.”
    • “The replay value is decent.”
  • graphics
    8 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The graphics of the game have received mixed reviews, with some players appreciating the unique art style and aesthetic appeal, while others find it less appealing or even ugly. Despite initial reservations, many users noted that they grew fond of the visuals over time, although the inability to revisit certain artwork was a drawback for some. Overall, the graphics are considered good, complemented by a user-friendly interface.

    • “Palais the reine looks very different than the recent yuri games of Kogado Studio; however, I ended up getting used to the graphics quickly and I managed to adore it.”
    • “Good graphics and a fairly easy to use interface.”
    • “I liked the 'old' art style.”
    • “The music was a little obnoxious, the graphic design kind of ugly.”
    • “Don't let the pretty art style fool you - you can order a hit on a child as the very first action you take!”
    • “This was very inconvenient for me, as I loved the art style of the CGs, but sadly, it's not possible to view them again in the menu.”

    • “Does it become repetitive or grindy at some point?”
    • “However, if you are looking for the story and romance only or if you want to go through the game several times in a row, then be ready for the grindy parts – there are various approaches you can take and quite a lot of people to romance, but all require specific conditions.”
