“Gameplay is basically see thing -> do thing.”

The game's story has received mixed reviews, with some praising its emotional depth and potential for expansion, while others find it simplistic and serving primarily as a backdrop for gameplay. Many players appreciate the engaging narrative and beautiful art style, but feel that character development and lore could be more fleshed out. Overall, the story is seen as a strong element, yet it leaves room for improvement and deeper exploration.
“The story was interesting; between fighting the water nation (blue-clad people) and the mist spawn (shadowy enemies) there’s enough potential here for DLC or even a sequel explaining and expanding the lore.”
“It's a very good looking game with a touching story.”
“But other than that, the combat was engaging, the story was engaging, and the art style was beautiful.”
“There's a story but it doesn't really matter - more of a framing device for the action.”
“The story is pretty bare; you learn little about the few characters you meet.”
“[environments and story are thin, sound design and music are bland, some frustrating platforming.]”

“Your entire game consists of avoiding the darkness; don't go play around with the concept of it willy-nilly for aesthetic reasons then.”

Nocturnal Review - Mist Opportunity
A competent, yet underwhelming Prince of Persia-inspired puzzle platformer. Its good looks will get it far, but its shallow personality won’t be bringing you back.
60%Nocturnal Review (PC)
Nocturnal definitely stands out as an interesting action-adventure side scroller. The twist on the platforming formula adds some novelty to the core gameplay, although I think that there are things that haven’t been explored enough. I really loved the premise of the game, but the story isn’t as rich as I would’ve liked. The fact that the game is pretty short doesn’t help either. Perhaps a different way to gain ashes, other than just breaking vases, would’ve gone a long way. All in all, Nocturnal remains a good indie platformer that offers enough innovations to make it worth a playthrough. Despite some uninspired mechanics, the overall gameplay experience is enjoyable and in no way frustrating. Review key was provided by the publisher.

Sunnyside have something very special in Nocturnal that could easily stand with the best if it had just a little more story and content.
