“Your entire game consists of avoiding the darkness; don't go play around with the concept of it willy-nilly for aesthetic reasons then.”

The game's story has received mixed reviews, with some players finding it emotionally impactful and engaging, while others view it as a simplistic framework for the action. There is potential for deeper lore and expansion through DLC or sequels, but many feel that character development is lacking. Overall, the combination of a visually appealing art style and a solid soundtrack enhances the storytelling experience.
“A story that could move someone.”
“The story was interesting; between fighting the water nation (blue-clad people) and the mist spawn (shadowy enemies), there’s enough potential here for DLC or even a sequel explaining and expanding the lore.”
“It's a very good looking game with a touching story.”
“There's a story, but it doesn't really matter - more of a framing device for the action.”
“The story is pretty bare; you learn little about the few characters you meet.”
“Lastly, there's the story.”

Nocturnal Review - Mist Opportunity
A competent, yet underwhelming Prince of Persia-inspired puzzle platformer. Its good looks will get it far, but its shallow personality won’t be bringing you back.
60%Nocturnal Review (PC)
Nocturnal definitely stands out as an interesting action-adventure side scroller. The twist on the platforming formula adds some novelty to the core gameplay, although I think that there are things that haven’t been explored enough. I really loved the premise of the game, but the story isn’t as rich as I would’ve liked. The fact that the game is pretty short doesn’t help either. Perhaps a different way to gain ashes, other than just breaking vases, would’ve gone a long way. All in all, Nocturnal remains a good indie platformer that offers enough innovations to make it worth a playthrough. Despite some uninspired mechanics, the overall gameplay experience is enjoyable and in no way frustrating. Review key was provided by the publisher.

Sunnyside have something very special in Nocturnal that could easily stand with the best if it had just a little more story and content.
