The graphics of the game have received widespread praise for their vibrant, nostalgic art style reminiscent of 80s cartoons like "Masters of the Universe" and "Thundercats." Players appreciate the beautiful animations and the overall aesthetic, which effectively captures the charm of classic animated shows while providing a fun co-op experience. However, some reviews note that while the visuals are impressive, they may not fully compensate for repetitive gameplay elements.

    • “The art style is amazing and the gameplay is fun.”
    • “The graphics, the voice acting, and even the cartoon intro for the game are perfectly evocative of the era the developers lovingly draw from, while still maintaining a surprisingly deep combat system.”
    • “The artwork is stellar!”
    • “The graphics, craptastic one-liners, the goofy flavor text, and the bad lip-syncing for the spoken lines.”
    • “At first glance, the visuals promise a colorful, exciting cartoon adventure but the experience is boring and bland.”
    • “It just doesn't feel like it's ready for release, and tests my patience with every step which is a shame because the premise, art style, and presentation of this game are everything that I should love.”
  • gameplay120 mentions

The gameplay of the game has received mixed reviews, with many players noting a lack of polish and repetitive mechanics that detract from the overall experience. While some appreciate the nostalgic art style and addictive gameplay loop, others criticize the slow pace, uninspired combat, and poor level design, leading to a feeling of mediocrity. Overall, the game shows potential with its unique character mechanics and cooperative play, but significant improvements are needed to elevate the gameplay to a more engaging and polished level.

    • “The gameplay loop is quite addictive and the soundtrack never gets old.”
    • “The gameplay itself is fun and entertaining and has enough features to not become boring soon.”
    • “Mythforce offers a thrilling gaming experience with its captivating animations and engaging gameplay.”
    • “It's almost like the devs themselves weren't quite sure what experience they wanted to make, and thus many elements from the gameplay to the UI and everything in-between are a hodge-podge blend of all sorts of different genres.”
    • “The gameplay, level, and enemy design leave much to be desired.”
    • “Unfortunately, its repetitive gameplay loop, frustrating stamina mechanic, and unrewarding progression system spoil what could've been an exceptional game.”
  • story58 mentions

The game's story is characterized by a nostalgic charm, featuring a blend of episodic storytelling and engaging cutscenes that resonate with fans of classic shows. While the narrative is intentionally cheesy and enjoyable, many players feel it lacks depth and could benefit from further expansion, especially given the potential for additional content. Overall, the story serves as a motivating backdrop for gameplay, but some players express a desire for more character development and variety in mission themes.

    • “This hybrid between a roguelite and an episodic story was fascinating, and even I, who generally do not like the 'rogue' genre, had a good time.”
    • “The story cutscenes give much-needed life to the game that otherwise wasn't there originally, especially during the final boss fight.”
    • “The world and story have really been fleshed out and are super nostalgic.”
    • “The story line is about as meh as all of these games.”
    • “It's a 'story' to motivate your pass through a particular run, nothing more.”
    • “I know people generally don't play these kinds of games for the story, but the actual storyline could use some fleshing out.”
  • music47 mentions

The music in the game has received widespread praise for its catchy and engaging soundtrack, which effectively complements the game's artistic direction and nostalgic 80s aesthetic. Many players appreciate the variety in musical styles, from synthwave to power metal, enhancing the overall experience, although some note that the in-game background music can become repetitive. Overall, the soundtrack is considered a standout feature, contributing significantly to the game's charm and enjoyment.

    • “The music and the art style is what really carries this title for me, the combat is where I felt I was missing something.”
    • “The great soundtrack ranges from power metal to synthwave and the tracks that accompany the boss fights set the tone superbly.”
    • “The art, the music, the core gameplay, the characters, all incredible.”
    • “The music is samey and repetitive (you can easily hear where the loops are).”
    • “The sound is terrible, you can't hear enemies behind you, the music doesn't fit the game, the progression of the city (upgrades) feels so grindy and basic.”
    • “Cons: very repetitive, boring map design, most times you wait for enemies to spawn in a small space, looting makes you backtrack, sound design and music is very bad, you can't hear enemies behind you, game repeats the same shop rooms but makes them bigger than regular dungeons so you waste time.”

The grinding aspect of the game is widely criticized for being tedious and unbalanced, particularly in the late game where extensive grinding is required to upgrade weapons and characters. While some players appreciate the challenge and potential rewards from higher difficulties, many find the repetitive level design and slow progression frustrating, leading to a lack of enjoyment. Overall, the grind is seen as excessive, detracting from the overall experience despite some fun elements.

    • “The progression system feels grindy and not impactful.”
    • “The level design is incredibly samey and gets super tedious after even just a few levels.”
    • “Upgrades are still massively overpriced: 5 weapons, 23 perks, 30 trinkets and 18 constellation slots all with 4 tiers to upgrade, plus 1 million gold worth of skins and voice lines, etc. To obtain 1 million gold, it takes hours and hours of grinding, and maxing your constellation by converting rare shards would cost over 50 million gold.”
  • stability15 mentions

The game's stability has been a mixed bag, with players noting a range of minor glitches and unpolished elements, such as invisible barriers and inconsistent hit detection. While some users report that these issues can detract from the experience, others find the gameplay enjoyable despite the bugs, suggesting that recent updates have improved overall performance. Overall, the game feels somewhat incomplete and janky, but not game-breaking, allowing for a fun experience if players are willing to overlook the imperfections.

    • “The game runs smoothly and rewards patience and positioning, making for a stable experience.”
    • “I appreciate how stable the gameplay feels; it really enhances the overall enjoyment.”
    • “The performance is consistently reliable, allowing me to focus on strategy without worrying about crashes.”
    • “It feels a little like an early access game, not that it's buggy, just that it feels a little incomplete.”
    • “Actually, the levels feel unpolished in general. There are invisible map barriers where arrows just get stuck in mid-air, steps leading to straight stone walls (not collapsed stones), and minor glitches where rooms are filled with some kind of dirt pile, but you can 'clip through' and open chests sitting 'inside' the dirt pile.”
    • “The game was very buggy, and my friends and I had a lot of issues.”
  • replayability13 mentions

Overall, the game offers significant replayability through multiple playable characters, increasing difficulty levels, and various upgrade options. Players can enjoy different hero abilities and a constellation system for personal upgrades, although some find the grind for resources tedious. While the replay value is high, concerns about a lack of new content in later runs may affect long-term engagement.

    • “Solid game, replayable, lots of stuff to level up.”
    • “There is definitely replay value as you get to choose different heroes before embarking on your adventure.”
    • “There's 3 difficulties beyond hard with increased drop rates on game resources, and there are 4 characters - so the replay value is already pretty high.”
    • “Then replayability drops because there is nothing new to find.”
    • “So far, the constellation system for upgrading yourself personally seems slightly pointless. I understand it will take multiple runs to upgrade it properly, but so far, it just feels like it will be a tedious task, knowing that I have to grind out crystals to upgrade. Regardless, you'll get options to boost defense, damage, reduce cooldowns, and such. You also have a store to buy weapons, outfits, emotes, and voice lines; some of that stuff is overpriced in my opinion, but I suppose they need to try and encourage replayability.”
    • “Please add more playable characters.”
  • humor8 mentions

The humor in the game is generally well-received, with players appreciating its funny dialogue and co-op mode that enhances the experience with a lighthearted, cartoonish vibe. However, some feel the game could benefit from additional comedic elements, such as quirky distractions and character interactions, to break up the repetitive gameplay. Overall, the humor is seen as a unique and refreshing aspect, despite some shortcomings.

    • “Also, funny and fun, with mixed playstyle options.”
    • “Albeit yes, hearing the hunter say 'the hunt is over' very often kinda just feels funny to me instead of it being annoying or breaking immersion.”
    • “Co-op mode adds a humorous touch to the experience, delivering on the promised Saturday morning cartoon vibe.”
  • optimization7 mentions

Overall, the game's optimization has received mixed feedback; while some players on high-end systems report no performance issues, others experience significant battery drain and performance concerns, particularly on portable devices. There are suggestions for improvements, especially regarding shared resources and combat responsiveness, indicating that while the game is enjoyable, it could benefit from further optimization in the future.

    • “I never had any performance issues, but given that I'm playing on a high-end system built earlier this year, I wouldn't expect any.”
    • “No one that I've played with has had any performance complaints.”
    • “Combat is more responsive and the performance of the game has gone up.”
    • “It can be a grind and could benefit from a little optimization for sure (looking at you, not shared gold across characters), but we're definitely having fun in this romp through 80's nostalgia.”
    • “It's not optimized at all; for me to get it to run better, I had to crank everything to ultra.”
    • “Maybe in a year it will be better with better combat, level design, and optimization.”
  • character development3 mentions

Character development in Mythforce is enhanced by its unique, nostalgic art style reminiscent of 80s cartoons, which is reflected in both the character design and the engaging opening cinematic. Players appreciate the likable characters and the overall aesthetic that contributes to the game's charm, making it a standout feature.

    • “Mythforce has the look and graphically works well within the idea of it being a TV show from the 80s. Character design-wise, they look like they'd easily fit in, and the game's opening cinematic has a lovely nostalgic feel to it, with a tune I find somewhat addictive. Honestly, this was originally the thing that got me interested in the game.”
    • “It has this unique style, especially in cutscenes and in character design that reminds me of the good old cartoon days.”
    • “Still, it has good gameplay and likable character designs.”
    • “The character development in Mythforce feels shallow and lacks depth, making it hard to connect with the characters on any meaningful level.”
    • “I was disappointed by the lack of growth and progression in the characters; they feel static and unchanging throughout the game.”
    • “Despite the nostalgic aesthetic, the characters are one-dimensional and fail to evolve, leaving the player wanting more substance.”
