Moviehouse

Moviehouse – The Film Studio Tycoon is an ambitious attempt at showing the ups and downs of the film industry. You gradually work your way up the ladder and producing great movies feels good. It’s a pity the game suffers from some issues that weren’t foreseen or accounted for. The charm of creating a good movie disappears when you realise you can make more money from buying out other studios. As your studio gets bigger and you hire more people, the user interface struggles to keep track of the relevant details. It’s a fun game at the start, though the long time it takes to produce movies can wear you down. For a simulator that passes some time, this will be great, but it does need some more refining to be a good management experience.

    36 mentions Positive Neutral Negative
22% positive mentions, 64% neutral mentions, 14% negative mentions

The gameplay of Moviehouse offers a strategic tycoon experience with some addictive elements and gradual complexity, but it suffers from poorly explained mechanics, lack of meaningful impact from many features, and repetitive, grind-heavy progression. Technical issues like bugs and clunky UI further hamper enjoyment, making the gameplay feel unsatisfying and less engaging compared to similar titles. While some players appreciate its concept and pacing, many find it lacks depth, innovation, and polish necessary for a compelling long-term experience.

    • “It's a tycoon with a clean and addictive design/mechanic!”
    • “The gameplay mechanic is fun to learn - what pairs well with what?”
    • “The game keeps you engaged and entertained with its addictive gameplay loop, and the hours just fly by.”
    • “Some mechanics feel underutilized or loosely connected, occasionally making outcomes seem less directly tied to player intent than expected.”
    • “The gameplay of Moviehouse requires quite a few hours of grinding out movies before you can start producing better films and buying out your competitors.”
    • “The UI is unwieldy, the mechanics are not well explained, and it just feels like a soulless grind, to be honest.”
  • optimization

The game suffers from significant optimization issues, including frequent bugs, lag, and poor performance even on max settings, making it often unplayable or frustrating. Users report slow pacing, glitches, and UI problems that hinder the experience, with many hoping for updates to improve stability and quality of life features.

    • “Would love to update my review once the game is playable and less performance lag.”
    • “Super super buggy and laggy game even with max performance settings on with no clear direction as to what you're supposed to do.”
    • “Update on 6/3/24: game is still unplayable with max performance settings.”
    • “There are also occasional performance issues and bugs that can cause the game to freeze up entirely.”
  • story

    13 mentions Positive Neutral Negative
23% positive mentions, 54% neutral mentions, 23% negative mentions

The story aspect of the game is largely driven by a menu-based, strategic simulation focused on the business side of filmmaking rather than immersive or visual storytelling. Players create movie scripts using a plot card system, which can feel limiting and sometimes frustrating, with sparse narrative progression and a lack of engaging plot development. While some appreciate the unique, intellectual approach, others find it too dry and lacking the fun or depth expected from a movie-themed game.

    • “There are some fresh features that were initially a little off-putting (like the plot cards system) that I quickly grew to appreciate.”
    • “You do this by selecting three plot cards, these plot cards cover the topics, setting, hero and villain.”
    • “There are six categories of plot cards which you can use towards creating a script.”
    • “I wanted a fun game to play about making movies, but I got a game where all I do is lose money and can't advance in the story line or make upgrades.”
    • “It’s no good having an action movie with no action and the plot makes no sense at all.”
    • “I was hoping finally for a The Movies remake but this is more Game Dev Story with less depth.”
  • stability

    10 mentions Positive Neutral Negative
10% positive mentions, 0% neutral mentions, 90% negative mentions

The game suffers from numerous bugs, glitches, and performance issues that cause lag, freezes, and unclear gameplay progression, significantly impacting stability. While some issues can be mitigated by troubleshooting, many players find these problems game-breaking and indicative of insufficient testing before release.

    • “Super super buggy and laggy game even with max performance settings on with no clear direction as to what you're supposed to do.”
    • “Because the whole game just freezes and you have to restart the game.”
    • “There also seems to be glitches: clearing debt and making income now seems impossible; it seems designed to spend a lot of time getting little value in return.”
  • graphics

    7 mentions Positive Neutral Negative
29% positive mentions, 28% neutral mentions, 43% negative mentions

The graphics in the game are generally seen as mediocre to poor, with some users noting graphical bugs and glitches that affect performance. Visuals do not meet the expectations set by the game's cinematic ambitions, and the game runs poorly on some systems despite attempts to improve settings.

    • “In the bug section of this forum, the devs have a troubleshooting FAQ and the one about preferred graphics card resolved my problem.”
    • “Nice graphics.”
    • “The visuals are poor and don't match up with the film you've opted to make and there is no insight into actually seeing your film, in any way.”
    • “I play Hogwarts Legacy at ultra graphics without a stutter, but this game brings my computer to a crawl.”
    • “There are also some graphical bugs and glitches, but the most annoying bug is when you want to promote a specific actor from C-class to B or higher, you can't.”
  • grinding
