  • story

The story in "Monster Hunter Wilds" has received mixed reviews, with many players noting its significant focus compared to previous titles in the series. While some appreciate the effort to create a more engaging narrative with memorable characters, others criticize it for being overly linear and filled with tedious escort missions and cutscenes that disrupt gameplay. The pacing is often described as slow, with players feeling railroaded through the story, which can detract from the overall experience, especially in multiplayer settings where friends must complete story segments individually before joining each other. Overall, the story is seen as a step up from past entries, but still not a primary draw for many fans of the franchise.

    • “The story is engaging and while people may not be fans of a sp locked campaign, I welcome the execution since previous stories were always quite dull.”
    • “The story is surprisingly solid, building up to an epic finale that had me hooked until the end.”
    • “The story is much better now than Monster Hunter World and I can see that Capcom put hard work into this game because there are many regions.”
    • “The main story is very lacking, poorly written, and at times maddening.”
    • “The railroading through the entire story (and more so during the first half) is obnoxious to the point where I almost quit.”
    • “The story is a slog to go through with friends.”
  • graphics
    8,854 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The graphics of "Monster Hunter Wilds" have received mixed reviews, with many players noting significant optimization issues and graphical glitches that detract from the overall experience. While some praise the stunning visuals and detailed environments, others criticize the game's performance, stating that it often runs poorly even on high-end hardware, with textures resembling those from older consoles. Overall, the game showcases impressive artistic design but struggles with technical execution, leading to a frustrating experience for many players.

    • “The graphics are amazing.”
    • “The re engine made monster hunter feel like a real thing, with very good graphics.”
    • “The visuals are absolutely stunning, bringing the world to life with incredible detail.”
    • “The graphics are pretty bad in some places and so is the optimization, but the game is still fun.”
    • “But let's also not forget the graphical quality of the game practically looks like PlayStation 3 and sometimes Xbox or PSP quality.”
    • “Overall 7/10 because the graphics are god awful.”
  • gameplay
    8,739 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay in "Monster Hunter Wilds" has received widespread acclaim for its mechanics, fluidity, and engaging combat, with many players noting it as the best iteration in the series to date. The introduction of new features like the wound mechanic and focus mode enhances the hunting experience, making battles feel more dynamic and rewarding. However, performance issues, including crashes and frame rate drops, have marred the overall experience for many, leading to mixed reviews despite the strong gameplay foundation.

    • “Mechanically, it's the best the series has ever been.”
    • “Gameplay is 10/10.”
    • “The gameplay is absolutely amazing.”
    • “MHW is better in terms of graphics and stability, yet this version is let down; it looks more inspired by gacha mobile game mechanics. Now you can ride like in Rise, which I don't think is a game changer but an additional chore. Large area yet too empty to explore.”
    • “Gameplay is fine, but a bit sluggish for my taste.”
    • “The gameplay loop, the story (so far), and the rest of the experience excluding optimization issues are great.”
  • stability
    1,974 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The stability of "Monster Hunter Wilds" has received mixed feedback from players, with many reporting significant issues such as frequent crashes, graphical glitches, and performance drops, particularly on lower-end systems. While some users with high-end hardware have experienced smooth gameplay, others have faced frustrating troubleshooting processes just to get the game running. Overall, the game appears to require urgent patches to address its numerous stability concerns.

    • “Runs great for me, no performance issues (80-120 fps in-game) and only 2 crashes in 12~ hours of play.”
    • “Game runs great, not really seeing the performance issues people are crying about.”
    • “It looks great, plays great, runs great.”
    • “Performance and image quality woes aside, the game occasionally just gets stuck on mission starts/finishes and then freezes my entire system when I dare to interact with it instead shutting it down via the task manager, erasing all progress since the last save.”
    • “Frequent crashes and freezes.”
    • “This is a buggy mess, and Capcom knew it was way before launch and did nothing about it.”
  • music
    617 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The music in the game has received overwhelmingly positive feedback, with many players praising its epic orchestral compositions that enhance the emotional impact of battles and exploration. Specific tracks, such as the "lord of ice," have been highlighted as favorites, while the overall soundtrack is often described as a standout feature that complements the game's atmosphere beautifully. Despite some criticisms regarding the memorability of certain themes compared to previous titles, the consensus is that the music is a significant highlight, contributing to an immersive and engaging gameplay experience.

    • “The music is incredible, the themes and environments are extremely interesting, I personally dislike their choice of season in the zone during the 'prologue' of the game (also known as low rank) but even so I must admit the idea makes the map a lot more unique especially as it affects resource abundance and monster variety and behaviour.”
    • “The music and sound design team did a fantastic job, I was worried when I played the beta and some of the 'meaty' sounding attacks were missing with the lance but they left me speechless on full release.”
    • “The music, composed by the talented team at Capcom, provides an epic and atmospheric soundtrack that perfectly complements the tone of the game.”
    • “Theme music of monsters is less 'heroic' than what World and Rise showed me.”
    • “I've also had issues with stop-starting audio, where I'd been in the middle of a cutscene, the music would be going, only to break into pure silence for a couple of seconds, pick back up again, and just do it again.”
    • “The music is usually a bit less melodic, less catchy, more forgettable than music in other Monster Hunter titles, but there are good tracks.”
  • grinding
    558 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The grinding aspect of the game has received mixed feedback from players. While some appreciate the streamlined farming mechanics that make acquiring gear faster and less tedious, others feel that the reduced need for grinding diminishes the sense of achievement typically associated with the series. Many players noted that the game feels less grindy than previous entries, but this has led to concerns about the overall challenge and longevity of the endgame content, with some expressing disappointment over the repetitive nature of monster encounters and the convoluted multiplayer setup.

    • “You aren't grinding out kill after kill waiting for that rare drop, or fighting tooth and nail for your life against some beast, learning their every move as you learn how to master their fight.”
    • “The game isn't grindy at all, yet at least.”
    • “There is no grinding, you can kill the monster twice and be able to make its full set unless you're unlucky, but considering how easy they are to kill, it's extremely quick and easy.”
    • “Here, it’s shoved in your face, making the experience feel tedious.”
    • “Honestly it was a lot of fun at the start but as I played it just got so repetitive and now like MHW type of repetitive no you literally just fight the same monster all the way from hey look a spider hey look another spider that really isn't different they just copy and pasted the same monster over and over again and none of them other than a few were actually really cool and worth fighting multiple times or grinding in general it just felt hollow especially without elder dragons.”
    • “The tedious main quest that drags me by the nose kicking and screaming on unskippable slow-walks, tutorializing me on systems they don't let me stop to actually try and showing me vast adventure fields that they don't let me explore, is just unbearable.”
  • humor
    338 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The humor in the game is a mixed bag, with many players finding joy in its quirky animations, funny character designs, and amusing glitches, such as a "farting monkey" and humorous cutscenes. However, some critiques highlight that the humor can be overshadowed by performance issues and frustrating gameplay mechanics, leading to a blend of laughter and frustration. Overall, while the game offers plenty of comedic moments, its technical flaws often detract from the experience.

    • “It's funny that she has no armor or weapon yet she happily stays with you the whole time, even while you're fighting massive civilization-destroying monsters.”
    • “I will say -- I picked low tier armor mostly for the skills... and my costume in the cut scenes literally made me laugh out loud multiple times.”
    • “It's fun, and you can tell the developers put a lot of care into the project so many funny animations and details that most games these days lack, not to mention a ludicrous amount of quality of life improvements.”
    • “Six hours with a game crash simulator is not funny.”
    • “The game crashes very often, and the 30fps spikes while fighting one monster are not funny.”
    • “Six hours with a game crash simulator is not funny.”
  • emotional
    278 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The emotional aspect of the game has received mixed feedback from players. While some found moments of genuine emotional connection and nostalgia, particularly through character design and certain impactful scenes, many criticized the overall narrative as boring and lacking depth, with excessive cutscenes that detracted from engagement. The game's attempts at emotional storytelling often fell flat, leading to frustration over pacing and character development, leaving players divided on their emotional investment in the experience.

    • “The first hour of playing this game was incredibly emotional for me, and I can’t thank Capcom enough for creating such a thoughtful and detailed experience that allowed me to honor Tobi’s memory.”
    • “I have only praise to give to the game; you can immerse yourself so much, the environments are one of the best in the series, the characters are likable and you get emotionally invested in them, the story has so many things at stake and you will get emotional with some of its key points.”
    • “The narrative is rich with lore, emotional stakes, and a sense of adventure that kept me invested far more than I expected.”
    • “A boring story forced down our throats; of the 2 hours I have played, it has been 80% cutscenes and an AFK simulator riding on an automatic driving bird dinosaur because letting the player have freedom would be too much for our little bird brains to handle.”
    • “So far the game feels slow and on rails with an incredibly boring story being shoved down my throat.”
    • “An extremely good game mechanically buried beneath a boring story and performance issues.”
  • monetization
    164 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The monetization strategy in the game has drawn significant criticism, with many players expressing frustration over the prevalence of microtransactions, particularly for character customization, which they feel should be included in the base price of the game. Reviewers describe the approach as aggressive and reminiscent of free-to-play models, detracting from the overall experience and suggesting that it reflects a cash grab mentality from the developers. Despite some acknowledging that the microtransactions are primarily cosmetic, the sentiment remains that they diminish the value of a full-priced game.

    • “The monetization strategy is... interesting... but the game part of it is fun.”
    • “The nickel-and-dime approach to monetization of a full-priced game is pretty annoying, but if you play a lot of Capcom titles you're probably jaded to this by now.”
    • “Anyways, the paid microtransactions right now seem to be mostly cosmetic, which seems to be the norm with Capcom.”
    • “Sadly, full-price games now come with monetization baked in.”
    • “The monetization sounds like something out of a free-to-play game as well.”
    • “Locking character edits behind microtransactions is laughably EA-level bullshit and is absolutely inexcusable.”
  • atmosphere
    102 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The atmosphere of the game is widely praised for its breathtaking visuals, immersive environments, and captivating sound design, creating a rich and engaging experience for players. Many reviewers highlight the game's ability to evoke a sense of wonder and excitement, despite some criticisms regarding performance issues and optimization. Overall, the atmosphere is considered a standout feature, enhancing both exploration and combat within the game.

    • “The pure atmospheric detail that's been put into the environments really excels, and raises the beauty and immersion of this game well over tenfold.”
    • “The environment for each region is absolutely breathtaking, the atmosphere is perfect, and the world itself is livelier than ever.”
    • “The music, composed by the talented team at Capcom, provides an epic and atmospheric soundtrack that perfectly complements the tone of the game.”
    • “So much so that I feel that some of the story fights probably felt more harrowing than they had to be because of the atmosphere around you.”
    • “Once I get through the story content and am able to just do quests and expeditions in more of a sandbox atmosphere, I'm sure my attitude towards the game will improve, but currently I'm frustrated going through it.”
    • “However, the game itself grips you with its atmosphere and gameplay.”
  • character development
    88 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Character development in the game has received mixed reviews, with many praising the emotional depth and unique personalities of the characters, while others criticize the lack of diversity and depth in NPC designs. The story is generally seen as engaging, with some players feeling a stronger connection to the game's world and its inhabitants compared to previous titles. However, issues such as inconsistent character animations and a perceived focus on profit over player enjoyment have also been noted, leading to a somewhat polarized reception.

    • “Great character designs with unique personalities and some emotional scenes.”
    • “Beyond that, this game has a great story, great character development, and the voice acting is very on point.”
    • “It still has the childish appeal and lightheartedness but with much more emotion and character development.”
    • “While the world feels expansive and full of different creatures, the human side of the narrative is still dominated by fairly homogenous character designs that don’t reflect the diversity of players who may be enjoying the game.”
    • “His transition into a whiny, didactic presence detracts from the narrative’s integrity and undermines the overall character development.”
    • “There is no personality; your cats talk to you now (you can swap back to the Felyne sounds, but this just makes the removal of the Monster Hunter language even more confusing). NPC animations are now stiffer due to your character having an RPG dialogue system now for some reason, and character designs are lacking as well.”
  • replayability
    68 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Overall, the game offers significant replayability with a variety of monsters and gameplay mechanics that encourage multiple playthroughs, especially in multiplayer settings. However, many players express concerns about performance issues and a lack of unique content, which can detract from the experience. While some reviewers highlight the potential for future updates to enhance replay value, others feel that the current state limits long-term engagement.

    • “Great game with great gameplay and replayability.”
    • “I'm 17 hours in so far and even past the base arc for the main storyline there are so many fun monsters to wrestle with plenty of replayability until you've found your rival.”
    • “A lot of variety and offers a ton of replay value and with the inclusion of DLC/monsters and potential crossovers it will most likely just continue to get better.”
    • “Currently, there is no armor for the final boss of the game, making it completely unreplayable.”
    • “There's a total of only 28 monsters - the only 'optional' quests you pick up along the way seem to be the same monsters you just hunted in the story missions. Not to mention the replayability isn't really there either because you gain so many materials from the monster on hunt that you can make full sets off of maybe 2-3 hunts easily.”
    • “This hand-holdy approach heavily damages replayability by forcing the player through several scripted scenes where you have ultimately no input or say for a good chunk of the introductory hours, and no means of opting out of the tutorials fully.”
