The music in this game is generally well-received, with players enjoying the variety of genres, particularly electronic, j-pop, and k-pop, which enhance the rhythm gameplay experience. Many appreciate the ability to customize song settings and practice specific parts of tracks, although some users have encountered issues with song loading and management. Overall, the music adds a fun and engaging layer to the gameplay, making it a highlight for many players.
“One of the most praised features of mcosu is its ability to allow players to practice specific parts of a song without having to play through the entire track.”
“I love this game because I love music.”
“This game is nice, fun, and somewhat relaxing, especially with music.”
“I can't even recommend this; you can only play songs up to normal difficulty. Anything beyond 3 hearts is just downright impossible because of how fast they are, and since all the beatmaps are made with a tablet in mind, well good luck. Even the press mouse button ones are stupidly hard because you cannot see the depth and the position to where they are gonna be on the screen. It has potential for osu VR, but unless the original developers actually get on board with it to add rails or position impacts and make something more official, then rip. Shame too, because the easy ones are fun, but just that easy.”
“Absolute dog$hit game, destroy your fingers, music taste, and brain with this disgusting abomination of a game.”
“Got the game path posted it into the path in mcosu and it can't load the beatmap files when I click on the songs despite them being in standard format.”

The gameplay is primarily centered around the mechanics of osu!, featuring customizable settings that allow players to tailor their experience for practice and improvement. While some users appreciate the transition to VR and the active physical engagement it offers, others criticize the performance issues and simplified graphics compared to traditional versions. Overall, the gameplay is seen as a faithful adaptation of osu! with added flexibility, making it appealing for both new and veteran players.
“This includes adjustable gameplay settings like approach rate, circle size, and HP drain, allowing players to simulate different playing conditions or focus on specific aspects of gameplay for improvement.”
“Ever since I started playing mcosu as it has a first-person mode, I can see a major improvement in my gameplay.”
“The gameplay is identical to osu stable in every way except for the fact there is no notelock (this is good).”
“Can be described as a really bad version of Dance Dance Revolution but with worse music, gameplay, and graphics.”
“Dumbed down interface, dumbed down gameplay, graphics and implementation severely hobbled to cater for the handheld devices that these apps are designed for.”
“It's very difficult to reach edges of the screen or move your hands fast, making gameplay frustrating.”

Overall, the optimization of the game is highly praised, with users noting significant improvements in performance, smooth gameplay, and high frame rates compared to the original osu! client. Many appreciate the game's ability to run well on lower-end PCs and the added features that enhance the gaming experience, although some mention occasional performance issues on specific setups. The customization options and responsive controls further contribute to its reputation as a well-optimized alternative for rhythm game enthusiasts.
“The performance in mcosu is generally smooth, with a high frame rate and responsive controls that ensure accurate timing and movement, which are critical in a rhythm game.”
“Absolutely amazing compared to the official client, works well on Linux OS, and has an optimized rendering engine which is a bonus as the official one and Lazer are far too much underperforming on all platforms (~250 fps on osu Lazer, ~190 on the official client, ~450 on mcosu).”
“This feels so much more responsive and optimized than osu!”
“The performance is better than the original...but it could be a con for some people like me that used to play with delays (I'm used to playing with 3-5ms delay).”
“Has significant performance issues under Wayland, and I don't like Lazer's gameplay tweaks, so this is perfect for the time being.”

“Outstanding job making the game as it is though it has a lot of potential in the visuals department.”
“The obvious first thing is the frills, like environments and graphics and stuff.”
