Look Outside

Look Outside is a wonderfully eerie adventure with some of the most unique scenarios and sights I’ve seen in a horror game in years. While it makes a strong first impression, though, as time went on, I sometimes wondered if I’d be better off just looking outside. However, there are still enough strong moments to make it worth checking out for those who love horror games and RPGs.

• Extremely deep and expansive content with high replayability and many secret endings and quests.
• Outstanding pixel art and animations that effectively blend grotesque horror with charm; exceptional soundtrack that enhances the atmosphere.
• Engaging, well-written story with complex characters and emotionally impactful themes of kindness and empathy amidst cosmic horror.
• Combat can become repetitive and sometimes trivial, with weapon durability and RNG elements being frustrating for some players.
• Saving system on normal and harder difficulties is restrictive and punishing, causing lost progress and requiring frequent backtracking.
• Certain quests, party recruitment and puzzles are obtuse or poorly signposted, often requiring external guides to fully experience or avoid softlocks.
• story
1,470 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The story is widely praised for its unique blend of cosmic and body horror with heartfelt, human elements, featuring rich storytelling, memorable characters, and a compelling, multi-layered narrative full of twists and multiple endings. It deftly balances bleakness with moments of hope and humor, encouraging exploration and replayability through branching quests and impactful player choices. Although some found pacing or quest design occasionally frustrating, the story’s deep atmosphere, emotional weight, and innovative approach make it a standout aspect that captivates players and leaves a lasting impression.

• “The story is phenomenal - a very intriguing premise that hooks you right from beginning to end, and every single event has you wanting to see more.”
• “Look outside is a masterpiece with excellent sound design, amazing pixel art that blends the line between grotesque and beautiful, and a truly unforgettable and uniquely crafted story.”
• “This game is an absolute storytelling masterpiece, in my completely honest opinion a GOTY candidate.”
• “The main storyline is complete, but what is missing are the details.”
• “It fails at everything, from the exploration and item management to the party members and quest design.”
• “The worst of all, though, is certainly the quest design. Every single one is either a fetch quest in which you go to place a, collect b thing, then go to place c and put it somewhere or give it to someone, or a talking session with multiple characters that have no charisma or depth.”
• music
1,242 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The music in "Look Outside" is widely praised as exceptional, featuring a diverse, catchy, and atmospheric soundtrack that significantly enhances the game's eldritch horror vibe and emotional impact. Composed with 80s and 90s horror synth influences, the soundtrack effectively sets moods ranging from tense and creepy to uplifting, often becoming memorable earworms that players enjoy both in and outside the game. Minor criticisms include occasional repetition, some mismatched tracks, and a few technical glitches, but overall the music is considered a standout element that complements the art, story, and gameplay brilliantly.

• “The music is absolutely gorgeous for the game; there were many times where the music genuinely made me pause to just sit and listen, and that's a rare commodity.”
• “The soundtrack is not only incredibly varied with its 97 unique tracks, but a vital asset that makes this an unforgettable experience, ranging from chilling to heart-pumping to devastating.”
• “The music and sound design really pull you into the world and set you on edge, making you nervous to enter rooms and interact with NPCs.”
• “My only complaint is the repetition of some of the music/soundtrack when exploring.”
• “One technical problem I have with the game is in relation to the newer updates, post 2.0 a lot of the triggers for the OST seem to be broken and some tracks don't play when they are supposed to.”
• “There's barely any notable music, and it also appears to be bugged, as many times the boss theme wouldn't play during the fights.”
• gameplay
1,074 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay of "Look Outside" is a well-crafted blend of traditional turn-based RPG mechanics with survival horror elements, featuring resource management, unique party member abilities, and a strategic save system tied to exploration. While the combat system is solid though not deeply innovative, the game's variety of mechanics, atmospheric tension, and meaningful choices create an engaging and replayable experience despite occasional frustrations with weapon durability randomness and a restrictive saving mechanic. Overall, the gameplay effectively supports the game's eerie narrative and richly detailed world, offering satisfying challenge and immersion for fans of RPGs and horror alike.

• “The gameplay is a genuinely fantastic mix of classic turn based JRPG and survival horror, making every fight lethal, unique and full of uncertainty.”
• “Look Outside mechanically is an RPG game, similar to things like Undertale but the present themes and amazing take on 'eldritch' psychological horror is what really grabs you and takes this to another level.”
• “The game manages to blend traditional RPG mechanics and survival horror resource management in a way no other game has.”
• “The saving mechanic is the one aspect that truly shows no mercy; it's possible to lose a lot of progress because of a decision that seems innocuous at first.”
• “The weapon breaking mechanic is awful; it's entirely RNG-based and leads to weapons breaking after minimal use, making it frustrating and unreliable.”
• “Look outside is still an overhyped, rushed game that relies on the worst parts of the survival horror genre with obvious beta elements still present during gameplay.”
• graphics
744 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's graphics stand out with a uniquely grotesque yet appealing pixel art style that blends horror and charm, creating an immersive atmosphere enriched by vivid, detailed creature designs and varied environments. Despite its retro aesthetic, the visuals effectively portray intense body horror and cosmic themes while maintaining cohesion through a thoughtful color palette. Praised for its artistry and creative design, the graphics are considered a major highlight that enhances the storytelling and overall experience.

• “Love this game maintains really good mystery, excellent body horror, wonderful pixel art style and really refreshing to see a full rainbow of colours utilized in a horror/dark setting while still feeling cohesive!”
• “The art style, the direction, the lore is so incredibly one of a kind that it will remain to be iconic and timeless.”
• “The pixel art style blends perfectly with the game's body horror theme, with creature designs reminiscent of "The Thing", and even the apostles from "Berserk".”
• “The pixel art style game the game a lot of memorability and charm but tbh I think I would've liked this game more if the graphics were higher.”
• “While there is enough info to see who attacked with what, the graphics and their visibility could be improved a bit.”
• “Visuals most of the time felt overly complicated.”
• humor
445 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game masterfully balances dark, grotesque, and cosmic horror with a distinctive, often macabre sense of humor that ranges from absurd and quirky to poignant and heartfelt. Its humor is praised for providing levity amidst tension, delivering witty dialogue, quirky character interactions, and unexpected comedic moments without undermining the horror atmosphere. This blend of humor and horror enhances the storytelling, emotional depth, and player engagement, making the experience uniquely entertaining and memorable.

• “The humor is beyond peak when it appears, blending dark and bizarre elements that enhance the game's unique tone.”
• “It manages to walk humor and horror hand-in-hand effortlessly, never letting one act at the expense of the other, while also being genuinely thought-provoking and poignant.”
• “The writing delivers well-timed and unexpected beats of humor, determination, and profound tragedy, maintaining a perfect balance within the horror context.”
• “The humor in 'Don't Look Outside' is not funny.”
• atmosphere
406 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game excels in creating a dense, immersive atmosphere that masterfully blends grotesque body and cosmic horror with quirky humor and moments of warmth. Its striking pixel art, eerie soundtrack, and detailed sound design work cohesively to build a tense, unsettling, yet oddly charming environment, making the atmosphere one of its standout features. Many reviewers highlight the game's ability to evoke deep emotional engagement and sustained unease without relying heavily on jump scares, immersing players in a richly textured, memorable experience.

• “9/10 - best atmosphere I've ever experienced in a game, great combat and exploration.”
• “An unsettling, atmospheric, oddly beautiful cosmic horror with a gripping story and surprising amounts of charm.”
• “The atmosphere is incredible, the gameplay loop is perfect, the story is phenomenal, the characters are stellar, and I haven't seen anything nail cosmic horror this well since Bloodborne.”
• “While I can understand this lends itself to a horror atmosphere, the system is seemingly at random with weapons having a chance to break every time you swing them.”
• “Instead of enhancing the atmosphere, it actually made it worse for me, to the point where I turned it off.”
• “A huge backtracking when you need to run around the entire hotel is tiring and ruins the atmosphere; the elevator doesn't really help because it's in the middle of nowhere and you still need to run through half of it through a million doors, each of which takes a couple of seconds, but overall it's noticeable.”
• emotional
314 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game masterfully blends cosmic horror with unexpectedly heartwarming and wholesome moments, delivering a deeply emotional experience marked by genuine character interactions, touching storylines, and moments of humor amid darkness. Players frequently report feeling moved to tears, experiencing a wide spectrum of emotions from dread and despair to hope and compassion, making it a standout emotional journey in the horror RPG genre. This balance of unsettling body horror and warmth creates a unique, memorable narrative that resonates long after play.

• “This game will chew you up and spit you back out emotionally, but in the best way possible.”
• “One of my favourite moments in the game is returning a character her laundry... the character sprites combined with the dialogue... it was heart-wrenching... I didn't even realise I was crying while reading the text (which is something I never do).”
• “While most of the dozen available endings fully embrace this game's horror and sense of dread, some few select ones are some of the most emotional character conclusions after tens of hours of living life through said characters' shoes, with one in particular (promise) being an absolute tearjerker.”
• replayability
261 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game boasts exceptionally high replayability driven by multiple endings, varied party members, randomized events, and rich, often missable content that ensures each playthrough feels fresh and unique. Its blend of choice-driven consequences, lore depth, and challenge levels encourages numerous replays to uncover all secrets and story paths, making it a standout in replay value among RPGs. Despite occasional obtuse elements or repetitiveness, the extensive content and dynamic gameplay sustain long-term engagement and satisfaction.

• “With 8 endings, a great array of party members and choices, and a short run time (around 9 hours if you're taking your time to see most things), it has a ton of replayability.”
• “The amount of different decisions you can make and the variety of equipment and party members, along with all the random encounters you can experience, also give it a lot of replayability.”
• “The game has so much replayability; there is so much to discover. Every time I have felt like I've seen everything the game has to offer, I always still find more.”
• “There was no replay value, the characters were rote, the endings were pretentious theorybait slop, and the tone was the dated, rote 'humanz are the real bad guyz!!!!' which anyone with a working TV is more than aware of.”
• “But certain areas of the game get pretty tedious when you play it more than once and that decreases the replayability for me.”
• “The idea that the most efficient way to start your game is to either rush the ground floor or to stay at home until you get 2-3 party members really takes away from the replayability of the game.”
• character development
86 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game features exceptionally creative and masterful character designs that vividly express distinct personalities and emotions, often blending unsettling body horror with compelling writing. Players praise the depth of character development through well-crafted stories, meaningful interactions, and diverse, memorable cast members that enhance the immersive and atmospheric experience. Overall, the character development stands out as a highlight, offering emotional engagement and a unique artistic flair that complements the game's horror and RPG elements.

• “If you're looking for strong character development, tons of quests with multiple choices and outcomes, varying insane endings, well-hidden secrets, and cosmic horror done right... then this is the game for you.”
• “The character writing is lovely and I got really attached to almost all of the recruitable cast, the character designs and sprite work are outstanding, the monster designs are some of the most creative I’ve seen yet, and don’t get me started on the OST!!”
• “The character designs and backstories are really interesting, you can really tell that the creators have put a lot of thought into the story and designs.”
• “The only thing is I wish the characters talked after certain boss fights, or during them, giving more character development like they did Papa.”
• “When scrolling through the wiki to describe some of the character designs to my friends, I (willingly) spoilered myself.”
• “Even if you're someone who doesn't prefer traditional RPGs, I really believe that the diversity in area and character design, robust animations and pervasive sense of tension can really propel a player to keep going despite the more repetitive aspects of battles.”
• grinding
59 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Grinding in the game is generally minimal and not a major focus, which many players appreciate for avoiding typical RPG fatigue. However, some areas and mechanics, such as backtracking, saving, and certain repetitive tasks, can feel tedious or frustrating, especially during extended play or multiple replays. Overall, while the game requires some strategic leveling and exploration, the grinding experience is lighter and less repetitive compared to traditional RPGs, though occasional monotony in specific sections remains a common critique.

• “It's a great RPG for those who love the genre or just love horror and aren't even that into RPGs [there's no grinding!!!]”
• “No grinding or doing too many repetitive things”
• “Not often does a game come along with an incredible story, fun but not tedious combat, almost every enemy is unique, and plotlines and characters that ripple across the game based on your decision making.”
• “Just kind of grindy and nothing interesting happens.”
• “The lack of an easy savepoint mixed with all the gruesome ways you could die instantly meant that you'd tediously re-walk the same areas over and over again, wasting 20-30 minutes per death.”
• “Lastly, new characters you acquire show up underleveled, therefore disincentivizing their use, especially seeing as grinding is hard, because enemies don't respawn and you have limited time.”
• stability
33 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game exhibits a range of minor to occasionally more serious bugs and visual glitches, but most are not game-breaking and are being actively addressed through patches. While some players experienced frustrating issues, others reported smooth performance, especially on platforms like Steam Deck. Overall, the stability is imperfect yet manageable, with ongoing improvements expected.

• “Runs great on the Steam Deck.”
• “No glitches, incredible character design, lots of dialog options, and many different endings.”
• “Overall, had a great time; runs great on the Deck.”
• “As with any other game, this one has visual glitches and game-breaking bugs. The problem here is the bugs are unpredictable and numerous enough to leave you guessing whether a particular mechanic is broken every time something behaves not as expected. Constantly considering the possibility that the game is broken ruins the horror experience quite a lot.”
• “My only real complaint is the copious amounts of bugs and glitches, both minor and game-breaking varieties.”
• “However, it is buggy at times and can ruin around 1 hour of progress due to not being able to save at will on normal difficulty when bugs happen.”
• optimization
11 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's optimization is mixed, with some users finding little need for build or path optimization due to the simplicity and forgiving nature of gameplay, while others note that the combat system and UI could be clearer and more efficient. Although performance generally surpasses average expectations, there are minor frustrations with manual saving and lack of deeper strategic optimization. Overall, optimization enhances casual play but may feel uninspired or unbalanced to those seeking a more challenging, finely-tuned experience.

• “Cursed mode seems great, but normal is way too easy and you can kill most superbosses in 1-2 turns even without perfect optimization.”
• “I spent hours trying to map out a route to do the achievements in as optimized a way, and in as few runs as possible, until I finally gave up and just decided to try my best.”
• “Meaning that backtracking isn't as punishing and path optimization isn't necessary to make sure you're not wasting time on mindless wandering.”
• “I spent hours trying to map out a route to complete the achievements in as optimized a way and in as few runs as possible, but I finally gave up and just decided to try my best.”
• “Combat system and UI could be more optimized and clearer.”
• “Uninspired, unbalanced, and poorly optimized.”
• monetization
10 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game features no intrusive microtransactions or cash grabs, offering a straightforward, high-quality experience that justifies its price. Ongoing updates improve content and fix oversights without additional cost, enhancing replayability with multiple endings. Despite poor advertising, players consistently find it worth purchasing for a solid survival horror game.

• “Just play it guys. I would have paid 100 dollars for a game like this, no cash grabs, no gimmicks, just a straight-up 10/10 horror game. It's hard even on easy mode.”
• “But unlike a typical AAA release where you'd pay $70 or more to get a possibly incomplete experience that may also shove in other undesirables like microtransactions in your face, this game’s later updates are correcting known oversights, slowly implementing the ideas and content that were missing, and adding to an already very strong experience.”
• “Microtransactions - in-game purchases.”
• “[i]Microtransactions - in-game purchases.”
