Light Apprentice

It's painfully obvious that the game was initially a mobile game, and the PC port doesn't do much to accommodate for the new platform. The quick-time events that pervade the combat turn the game into a chore, and there isn't really any part that makes the grind worth it.

  • Enjoyable mixture of RPG, point-and-click adventure, and visual novel elements, combined with a fitting soundtrack and art style.
  • Numerous bugs and glitches including save issues, freezes, and progression blockers, with poor ongoing developer support.
  • Combat relying heavily on repetitive quick-time event minigames, which can become tedious and unbalanced.
  • Mobile port limitations lead to quirky controls and interface issues that detract from the PC experience.
  • story
    71 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The story of the game is presented in a distinctive comic book style, featuring an engaging, environmentally themed plot with relatable characters and meaningful moral choices that impact the narrative and gameplay. Though the first volume is somewhat short and occasionally feels unfinished, it delivers a poignant, enjoyable experience that resonates with RPG fans who appreciate heartfelt storytelling and replayability. Some find the story a bit simplistic or slow to start, but overall it is well-written, creative, and keeps players eager for future installments.

    • “This game oozes creativity, genuinely likeable characters (Tlob the Blueling holds a special place in my heart) - and a story which keeps pace nicely, the gaming equivalent of a real page-turner, where your choices really feel like they have significant impact.”
    • “The game’s comic book presentation is strong, both as a really cool aesthetic as well as a storytelling device, and the story itself is well worth reading.”
    • “If you are looking for a great take on classic RPG adventure games with an amazing story, adorable graphics, relatable characters and lovely music, this is the game for you.”
    • “I bought this thinking that it would be a comic-like adventure game with role-playing elements, where I could make choices that mattered to the story.”
    • “It may have an ok story, but I don't have the patience to stick with it - the combat mini game system of fighting just makes the progress way too slow.”
    • “There are certain points in the story where it will save but you never really know when they will happen so you never know for sure if you quit how much you will have to repeat.”
  • gameplay
    21 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay combines point-and-click navigation with RPG and visual novel elements, featuring both exploration and turn-based combat. While the combat system offers strategic depth and meaningful choices that shape character skills, some players find battles repetitive, especially on pacifist routes, and note occasional pacing issues due to mode transitions. Overall, the gameplay is engaging and unique, with a strong emphasis on storytelling and accessible controls.

    • “Gameplay is fun, addictive and RPG-like; it's simple and only requires the mouse or one controller, few buttons, descriptive tutorial, and different minigame events for different skills.”
    • “The combat mechanics are very well executed, similar to other turn-based games such as Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and Stick of Truth.”
    • “I enjoy games where 'choices matter' and in this RPG they can literally affect which skills you can and cannot use in battle, which helps shape your characters and gameplay styles.”
    • “The biggest problem with the gameplay is how the battles are so boring and repetitive, especially when you take the pacifist route.”
    • “The clunky mechanics, the limited options for combat, and the way you navigate in adventure mode (while inventive) sometimes transition poorly.”
    • “To a lesser annoyance, this mechanic also forces you to exit the main game mode and play what basically amounts to a side activity before you can continue, which breaks the flow of the game somewhat.”
  • graphics
    17 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's graphics are praised for their unique, colorful, and comic book-inspired art style, which effectively conveys emotion and storytelling through manga-like visuals and speech bubbles. Despite occasional minor graphical glitches, the artwork is consistently described as adorable, charming, and well-suited to the game's aesthetic, enhancing the overall experience.

    • “The game’s comic book presentation is strong, both as a really cool aesthetic as well as a storytelling device, and the story itself is one that is well worth reading.”
    • “What sets this game apart from its contemporaries, however, is the unique art style and overall aesthetic of the game and story.”
    • “From the cartoony art style of the characters to how the whole story is told using speech bubbles and pop-up text, to how every cutscene and even gameplay sections are transitioned using comic book panels, every detail has been fine tuned to give off this vibe of colorful comic book goodness.”
    • “This title (at the time of writing) still has a degree of things that need patching: small bug fixes, control elements and occasional graphics glitches which can - if unprepared - detract from the overall experience.”
  • music
    12 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's soundtrack is widely praised for fitting the game's tone perfectly, enhancing both emotional cut-scenes and adrenaline-pumping combat. While the music is generally considered beautiful and well-composed, some users express a desire for more variety to reduce repetition. Overall, the music complements the game's aesthetics and narrative effectively.

    • “The music in cut-scenes drives the emotion and the music in combat mode has your adrenaline pumping.”
    • “If you are looking a great take on classic RPG adventure games with an amazing story, adorable graphics, relatable characters and lovely music, this is the game for you.”
    • “The game has no voice acting in it but does have a wonderful soundtrack that fits the aesthetics very well.”
  • stability
    3 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's stability is generally acceptable but still has occasional bugs, minor glitches, and control issues that may affect the experience. While no game-breaking problems were found, some patching is needed as it remains in early access.

    • “I'll also mention that the game can be pretty buggy at times.”
    • “This title (at the time of writing) still has a degree of things that need patching: small bug fixes, control elements, and occasional graphics glitches which can—if unprepared—detract from the overall experience.”
    • “As it's still early access there may be some glitches, but I didn't find any game-breaking ones.”
  • grinding
    3 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Grinding in the game is a divisive aspect; while some players find it enjoyable, many consider it tedious due to the lack of random encounters and the reliance on gear drops—rather than purchases—to improve stats, which can make progression feel slow and tiring.

    • “You’ll either love them or hate them, I was personally alright with them but they became tedious.”
    • “There are no random encounters so grinding isn’t easy and your stats are directly affected by the gear your character wears which you can’t purchase, only find.”
    • “Because while there are people out there who find the exercise fun (I being among them) there's a whole host of others who will find it very tedious and very tiring very fast.”
  • emotional
    2 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game fosters a strong emotional connection with its characters and NPCs, delivering a touching and engaging adventure through its four playable chapters.

    • “Strong emotional connection with the characters and NPCs.”
    • “Four playable chapters and a story about an adventure that is not only engaging but touching.”
  • character development
    1 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Character development in this volume is minimal, primarily limited to basic personality traits and some flashbacks for Nate, without deeper growth or complexity.

    • “While we get some flashbacks for Nate, this volume doesn’t have much in the way of character development aside from showing us their basic personalities.”
  • humor
    1 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The humor in the game is light and engaging, complementing a story that balances simplicity with moments that are funny, dark, and emotional. This mix creates an enjoyable and entertaining narrative experience.
