  • gameplay9 mentions

The gameplay of Hypertrain combines high-speed racing mechanics with delivery tasks, requiring players to navigate through traffic and obstacles on a randomly generated map while managing cargo and passengers. Players can also build their own tracks, adding a creative element to the experience, although mastering the game can be challenging at first. While the combat mechanics exist, they often feel secondary to the fast-paced racing, making the overall gameplay both engaging and dynamic.

    • “Stumbled upon this one and I highly recommend this game. Think of it as a delivery game with high-speed slot racing mechanics, with a dab of track building in the mix on a pre-generated island, and that is Hypertrain.”
    • “Gameplay: drive a super fast train on a slot car style track delivering cargo and passengers from point A to B, all while navigating a randomly generated map and defending yourself from marauders and avoiding road hazards.”
    • “Very fun idea with a cool game to go along with it. I bet the devs will keep building on their idea as well as the core gameplay; speaking of building, you can build your own tracks as you drive, and while it might not be perfect at the moment, it's definitely a main feature of the game that I like.”
    • “Your gameplay is mostly weaving in and out of slower traffic, trying to avoid significant crashes.”
    • “The gameplay basically comes in two flavors: the first is high-speed weaving and bobbing through traffic and obstacles while thumping music plays.”
    • “- there's a combat mechanic, but it feels at odds with the high speeds -- I often find it easy to just zoom past when I see bandits.”

The graphics of the game are characterized by a simplistic, low-poly aesthetic that combines retro and futuristic elements, enhanced by effective lighting that adds beauty to the visuals. While many players appreciate the unique and clean design, some have noted issues with graphics bugs and a lack of options, suggesting that the developers may not be fully addressing these concerns. Overall, the visuals contribute to a distinct atmosphere, hinting at a dystopian future.

    • “You steer a 'hypertrain' through a low-poly, retro-graphics but futuristic-looking world.”
    • “- the clean, simplistic graphics belie a kind of dystopian future that's only hinted at.”
    • “Sadly, it's marred by the developers knowing there is a graphics bug and missing options, and seemingly don't care about it.”
    • “The graphics are simple, yet the lighting makes it beautiful, even in a low-poly game such as this.”
    • “The clean, simplistic graphics belie a kind of dystopian future that's only hinted at.”
  • story7 mentions

The story in the game revolves around completing transport missions between cities, which provide a sense of purpose and progression as players earn money to connect different locations. However, some users find the missions lack depth, as they involve set destinations without risk, and suggest that incorporating a free market system for buying and selling goods could enhance the narrative experience. Overall, while the missions drive the gameplay, they could benefit from more dynamic elements to enrich the story.

    • “Connecting two cities that want to be connected gives you huge amounts of money, helping you progress towards victory.”
    • “Each city offers missions you can complete which help you earn money.”
    • “You do this by accepting cargo transport missions at a city.”
    • “The transport missions feel a little flat, because you get a set destination and there's no risk since you don't pay for the goods.”
    • “Some roads collide into walls and hills, which detracts from the overall experience.”
    • “The story lacks depth and engagement, making it hard to feel invested in the missions.”

  • grinding1 mentions

Players find the grinding aspect of the game tedious, particularly when constructing four-lane roads, as traffic congestion can become overwhelming and lead to damage if not managed effectively.

    • “This gets really tedious once you start building four-lane roads; otherwise, it gets clogged with traffic, making it impassable without taking damage.”
    • “The grinding feels endless and repetitive, making it hard to stay engaged with the game.”
    • “I find myself doing the same tasks over and over again just to progress, which really takes away from the enjoyment.”
