Fracked is the most stylish and exhilarating VR experience of 2021 – and may even be the best implemented shooter I have experienced on the Sony headset.
"Fracked" is a single-player shooter game with stunning graphics, available on various VR platforms. The game features innovative VR gunplay, including a 1:1 grabbable cover system, free skiing, and climbing, providing a unique and immersive experience. Players become a maverick war hero, battling an escalating threat in a harsh mountain environment.
Reviews
- The game features an attractive cell-shaded art style that enhances the visual experience.
- Fast-paced and engaging gameplay with fun run-and-gun mechanics, particularly during the skiing and climbing sections.
- The cover system and unique movement mechanics provide a fresh take on VR shooting experiences.
- The game suffers from numerous bugs and control issues, particularly with the skiing mechanics and overall gameplay flow.
- Short campaign length and limited enemy variety make the experience feel repetitive and lacking depth.
- The graphics and audio design are considered outdated, detracting from immersion and overall enjoyment.

The graphics of the game are characterized by a distinctive cell-shaded art style that many players find attractive, reminiscent of titles like Borderlands and XIII. However, despite the appealing visuals, there are notable shortcomings, including low-resolution textures, lack of detail in distant objects, and limited graphical options, which detract from the overall experience. While the art style is praised for its uniqueness and charm, many reviewers feel that the graphics do not meet modern standards, impacting immersion and visual fidelity.
“5 hours of gameplay, very attractive cel-shaded art style.”
“I appreciate the hard work that went into the game, and I absolutely love the visuals for this.”
“Had a Borderlands look to the graphics, shooting was fine, didn't see any graphical glitches or bugs... ran smooth as butter for me!”
“The environments are quite beautiful and interconnected, but backgrounds and skyboxes are very small and blurry. A lot of textures lack detail, and there are no graphic options to improve it other than cranking up Steam VR supersampling.”
“Graphics aren't sharp; things in the distance aren't believable because of the rough edges.”
“Lastly, the graphics and textures are a bit too low resolution by today's standards, to the point where it is distracting and takes away from the game.”

The story in the game is generally viewed as generic and serviceable, with some players appreciating the engaging audio voiceovers and radio communications that enhance the experience. While it features a cliffhanger ending and a fun, B-movie vibe, many reviewers noted that the narrative is straightforward and lacks depth, making it feel short and somewhat simplistic. Overall, the voice acting is praised, but the story's execution and gameplay mechanics leave room for improvement.
“The story unfolds through audio voice overs and radio communication with your helicopter pilot, which is fun and makes you feel like a special agent.”
“The story ends with a cliffhanger (no pun intended) and I hope that maybe someday we get to see a 'Fracked 2' with even more features and maybe twice the campaign length.”
“I loved the graphics and the performance, the story is fine, nothing too complicated, it's easy to follow and it fits the game perfectly; the voice acting was pretty good.”
“Can't even execute the most basic gameplay loop or story correctly.”
“The story is generic, but the voice acting is good.”
“In its current state, with the short story length, the game should be more like $10.”

The gameplay has received mixed reviews, with some praising its fun gunplay and unique cover mechanics, particularly for accessibility, while others criticize its repetitive combat, lack of depth, and dated graphics. Although the cel-shaded art style is attractive, many players found the overall experience lacking, with issues in execution and limited content detracting from the enjoyment. The skiing mechanics and gun reload system were also noted as poorly implemented, contributing to a sense of mediocrity in the gameplay experience.
“5 hours of gameplay, very attractive cel-shaded art style.”
“The gameplay is solid and fun; the cartoony visuals look nice despite lacking any noticeable graphic improvement for the PC release, but the content is very limited.”
“Gunplay is satisfying, and the unique cover mechanics with the ability to position yourself around by grabbing cover edges is a much better accessibility option than 'push button to crouch.'”
“Can't even execute the most basic gameplay loop or story correctly.”
“I was initially impressed with the skiing and tutorial phase of the game, but later on, I found the overall gameplay to be lacking.”
“The gameplay could use a little mixing up from time to time, as the combat starts to get a bit repetitive by the ending where you've seen the same 3 or 4 enemy types for the entire game.”

The stability of the game is highly inconsistent, with some users reporting a "buggy mess" and issues like freezing locomotion, potentially due to its origins as a port from PSVR. Conversely, others have experienced smooth performance with no noticeable glitches, indicating a divide in user experiences.
“Runs great”
“The game maintains a smooth performance without any crashes.”
“I appreciate how stable the gameplay is, even during intense moments.”
“Half-baked, annoying, buggy mess.”
“I have heard and read that this version of the game is a port from the PSVR, which, if true, may help to explain a little bit of the buggy nature.”
“It does not work, and the locomotion freezes completely when you resume the game.”

Overall, users report positive performance and graphics optimization, particularly noting the ability to easily enhance settings on high-end hardware like the Reverb G2 and RX 6800 XT. However, there is a sentiment that the game's optimization could be improved to match modern VR standards, suggesting it would be more valuable at a lower price point if these enhancements were made.
“Which I easily raised to 200% on Reverb G2 and RX 6800 XT, so at least the performance is good.”
“I loved the graphics and the performance; the story is fine, nothing too complicated, it's easy to follow and fits the game perfectly.”
“The art style is fantastic, and if the PC performance was brought up to par with modern VR games, this port would be worth $15 or $20.”
