Fracked is the most stylish and exhilarating VR experience of 2021 – and may even be the best implemented shooter I have experienced on the Sony headset.
"Fracked" is a single-player shooter game with stunning graphics, available on various VR platforms. The game features innovative VR gunplay, including a 1:1 grabbable cover system, free skiing, and climbing, providing a unique and immersive experience. Players become a maverick war hero, battling an escalating threat in a harsh mountain environment.
Reviews
- The game features an attractive cell-shaded art style and engaging action, making it a fun and fast-paced experience.
- Skiing and climbing sections are well-designed and add variety to the gameplay, providing a sense of speed and excitement.
- The cover mechanics and gunplay are enjoyable, allowing for a dynamic shooting experience that feels immersive.
- The game is very short, with many players completing it in under three hours, leading to concerns about its value at full price.
- There are numerous bugs and design flaws, including issues with controls, audio, and enemy AI, which detract from the overall experience.
- The story is often criticized for being nonsensical and the enemy variety is limited, making the gameplay feel repetitive.

The graphics of the game feature an attractive cel-shaded art style reminiscent of titles like Borderlands and XIII, which many players appreciate for its unique aesthetic. However, the visuals suffer from low-resolution textures and a lack of detail, particularly in distant backgrounds, leading to a somewhat dated appearance that detracts from the overall experience. While the art style is praised, the absence of graphic options and noticeable improvements in the PC release have left some players wanting more.
“5 hours of gameplay, very attractive cel-shaded art style.”
“I appreciate the hard work that went into the game, and I absolutely love the visuals for this.”
“Pretty decent shooter with a unique cel-shaded (XIII style) visuals, fun gunplay, decent music, and a great cover mechanic.”
“The environments are quite beautiful and interconnected, but backgrounds and skyboxes are very small and blurry. A lot of textures lack detail, and there are no graphic options to improve it other than cranking up Steam VR supersampling.”
“Graphics aren't sharp; things in the distance aren't believable because of the rough edges.”
“Lastly, the graphics and textures are a bit too low resolution by today's standards, to the point where it is distracting and takes away from the game.”

The gameplay has received mixed reviews, with some praising its unique cover mechanics and satisfying gunplay, particularly for a VR title, while others criticize its repetitive combat, limited content, and poorly implemented mechanics like skiing and gun reloading. The attractive cel-shaded art style and accessibility features are noted, but many feel the overall experience lacks depth and innovation, leading to a perception of it being a mediocre shooter.
“5 hours of gameplay, very attractive cel-shaded art style.”
“On the shorter side but is a fun time and has a lot of interesting design ideas, especially well-made VR cover shooter with mechanics in place for people with disabilities and bad backs.”
“Gunplay is satisfying, and unique cover mechanics with the ability to position yourself around by grabbing cover edges is a much better accessibility option than 'push button to crouch'.”
“I was initially impressed with the skiing and tutorial phase of the game, but later on, I found the overall gameplay to be lacking.”
“Firstly, the free locomotion direction cannot be changed, despite the setting being available in the gameplay menu.”
“The gameplay could use a little mixing up from time to time, as the combat starts to get a bit repetitive by the ending where you've seen the same 3 or 4 enemy types for the entire game.”

The story in "Fracked" is generally viewed as serviceable and somewhat generic, with a fun B-movie vibe enhanced by good voice acting and engaging audio elements like radio communication. While some players appreciate the cliffhanger ending and the immersive feel of being a special agent, others criticize the story's execution and brevity, suggesting it could benefit from a longer campaign and more depth. Overall, it offers a light, entertaining narrative experience, particularly for VR enthusiasts craving story-driven content.
“The story unfolds through audio voice overs and radio communication with your helicopter pilot, which is fun and makes you feel like a special agent.”
“The story ends with a cliffhanger (no pun intended) and I hope that maybe someday we get to see a 'Fracked 2' with even more features and maybe twice the campaign length.”
“I loved the graphics and the performance; the story is fine, nothing too complicated, it's easy to follow and it fits the game perfectly. The voice acting was pretty good.”
“Can't even execute the most basic gameplay loop or story correctly.”
“The story is generic, but the voice acting is good.”
“In its current state, with the short story length, the game should be more like $10.”

The stability of the game is highly inconsistent, with some users reporting it as a "buggy mess" that frequently freezes, particularly during locomotion. In contrast, others have experienced smooth performance with no noticeable glitches, suggesting that stability may vary significantly between different setups or versions of the game.

“Half baked, annoying, buggy mess.”
“I have heard and read that this version of the game is a port from the PSVR, which, if true, may help to explain a little bit of the buggy nature.”
“It does not work and the locomotion freezes completely when you resume the game.”

Overall, the optimization of the game is praised for its good performance, particularly on high-end hardware like the Reverb G2 and RX 6800 XT, allowing users to enhance graphics significantly. However, there are suggestions that the PC performance could be improved to match modern VR standards, which would enhance the game's value.
“I easily raised the performance to 200% on Reverb G2 and RX 6800 XT, so at least the performance is good.”
“I loved the graphics and the performance; the story is fine, nothing too complicated, it's easy to follow and fits the game perfectly. The voice acting was pretty good.”
“The art style is fantastic, and if the PC performance was brought up to par with modern VR games, this port would be worth $15 or $20.”
