Down in Bermuda

Down in Bermuda is a fun little puzzle-adventure. That said, I beat it in just over three (leisurely) hours. The $19.99 launch price is hard to justify, especially for a game whose mobile origins shine through in both looks and feel. So wishlist this one for a future sale.

  • Simple, intuitive puzzles that provide a light challenge and enjoyable gameplay suitable for casual players and beginners.
  • Well-crafted blend of puzzle and hidden object elements, with satisfying sound design and music that enhances immersion.
  • Extremely short game length, often completing in about 2-4 hours, making the full price seem unjustified.
  • Control and camera mechanics are often clunky and awkward, especially on PC ports originally designed for touchscreens.
  • Achievement system is frustrating with missable achievements requiring full game replays and lack of level-specific restarts.
  • graphics
    120 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game features a charming, vibrant low-poly art style with bright colors and a minimalist yet aesthetically pleasing design that many players find relaxing and visually delightful. While the graphics are consistently praised for their cuteness, clarity, and soothing atmosphere, some note occasional optimization issues and a lack of advanced graphical settings. Overall, the visuals strongly complement the cozy and straightforward puzzle gameplay, making it an engaging and enjoyable experience for fans of casual, artistic puzzle games.

    • “The art style is vibrant and clean, characterized by stylized low-poly environments drenched in bright tropical colors.”
    • “The attention to detail in the visuals truly made Down in Bermuda a visual feast.”
    • “As a fan of puzzle games, I found Down in Bermuda to be a breath of fresh air, delivering a perfect blend of brain-teasers, captivating storytelling, and stunning visuals.”
    • “Unfortunately, the vibrant, low-poly graphics can't save these shortcomings.”
    • “There is a complete lack of any adjustable settings for both graphics and audio, despite being needed for performance and playability (the audio is very unbalanced for example).”
    • “Controls are a bit janky with the two cart segments and the graphics really chugged when moving the characters between segments of the final island.”
  • story
    114 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The story in this puzzle game is simple, cute, and heartwarming, centered on a pilot trapped in the Bermuda Triangle trying to find his way home. While the narrative is light, minimalistic, and not deeply developed, it is effectively conveyed through charming visuals, dialogue snippets, and environmental storytelling, providing a pleasant, unobtrusive backdrop that complements the relaxing gameplay. Overall, the story adds a sweet and cozy atmosphere but is not the primary focus or a deep plot-driven experience.

    • “The game follows the story of Milton, an adventurous pilot who finds himself trapped in the mysterious Bermuda Triangle after a storm forces him to crash-land. Decades later, isolated and surrounded by strange islands suspended between worlds, Milton embarks on a quest to escape by unlocking the secrets hidden across the archipelago.”
    • “Milton’s story unfolds primarily through small snippets of dialogue and environmental storytelling rather than elaborate cutscenes or character development.”
    • “Wonderful little puzzle game with a sweet story and a better than expected ending.”
    • “The puzzles are super easy and mostly just tedious and the story is barely there.”
    • “Idk who came up with the story but this is dumb.”
    • “Story is a bit bland, and I quickly felt uninterested in it.”
  • gameplay
    60 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay of "Down in Bermuda" is characterized by simple, intuitive mechanics focused on puzzle-solving and hidden object discovery, offering a relaxing and visually charming experience. While the puzzles provide a mild challenge with engaging variety, the gameplay can feel repetitive and short for some, and certain control schemes—particularly mouse or touchpad—may be frustrating. Overall, it appeals to players seeking a chill, aesthetically pleasing puzzle adventure rather than intense difficulty or long playtime.

    • “The narrative serves more as a gentle backdrop than a central focus, setting the stage for a collection of self-contained puzzle environments that blend curiosity-driven gameplay with a relaxing sense of wonder.”
    • “The combination of intuitive mechanics, uplifting aesthetics, and a tranquil atmosphere makes it stand out among puzzle-adventure games that often lean too heavily on difficulty or exposition.”
    • “Each island introduces its own visual and mechanical theme—from verdant jungles and volcanic ruins to icy fortresses and underwater civilizations—ensuring that progression always feels fresh, even if the core interaction remains consistent.”
    • “A lot of the gameplay involves finding hidden glowing orbs around the 3D levels by controlling your point of view, and that felt a little repetitive.”
    • “It's all the worst parts of point and click gameplay, don't recommend.”
    • “Very similar gameplay, but the puzzles on the whole seem less interesting and more random.”
  • music
    44 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The music in the game is widely praised for its calming, relaxing, and ambient qualities, often featuring gentle melodies and nature sounds that enhance the laid-back atmosphere. While some find the soundtrack soothing and well-matched to the visuals and gameplay, a few mention issues with volume balance and occasional repetitiveness. Overall, the soundtrack is considered a strong, charming element that contributes significantly to the cozy, inviting experience.

    • “The soundtrack perfectly complements the mood, featuring gentle melodies and ambient soundscapes filled with ocean breezes, birdsong, and the occasional mechanical hum.”
    • “Also props to the sound designer(s) on this one—the sound effects were really engaging, and the music added ambiance without being repetitive (a bonus, since it's easy to spend 15 to 30 minutes on a level).”
    • “The soundtrack is also on point, full of jaunty tunes that reinforce the laid-back atmosphere.”
    • “I only noticed the music when it looped to a louder part of the track and distracted me.”
    • “Wish there were at least volume sliders, because the sound is really loud and the music is really soft.”
    • “And the music seems to disappear from time to time, there is no vocal dialog even for such a short game, definitely not worth full or 75% price.”
  • grinding
    12 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Grinding in the game is characterized by repetitive and tedious collectible hunts, particularly involving searching for orbs across islands, which some players find unnecessarily prolongs gameplay. While puzzles are generally easy and not challenging, the frequent back-and-forth movement and object interaction can feel monotonous and tedious for many.

    • “Only irritating thing I find with the game is that I have to collect so many orbs all over the various maps, which is just a bit tedious for me that is more just to make the game last a bit longer than necessary.”
    • “The hidden object part felt sometimes a little bit "grindy".”
    • “However, some players may find the collectible-oriented objectives—particularly the search for smaller orbs scattered across each island—occasionally tedious.”
  • atmosphere
    11 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's atmosphere is widely praised for being relaxing, tranquil, and inviting, with bright, uplifting visuals and a soothing soundtrack that enhance its laid-back vibe. Its charming, tactile art style and varied island settings create a comforting environment ideal for casual play and unwinding. Overall, the atmosphere stands out as a key strength, offering a refreshing contrast to more intense or dark puzzle-adventure games.

    • “The combination of intuitive mechanics, uplifting aesthetics, and a tranquil atmosphere makes it stand out among puzzle-adventure games that often lean too heavily on difficulty or exposition.”
    • “Gameplay may not be very long, particularly for experienced or adult gamers, but the atmosphere is so comforting and inviting that you might just hang out on an island for an hour or six while the background music sets the vibe for your busy work tasks of the day.”
    • “The soundtrack is also on point, full of jaunty tunes that reinforce the laid-back atmosphere.”
    • “Think of it as a version of The Room, but wholesome: bright colors and cartoony characters, no disquieting atmosphere.”
    • “Controls were easy and it had a hint of the lovely 'tactile' feel that The Room games have, but with a much lighter atmosphere.”
    • “Very much in the Monument Valley part of the puzzle genre in terms of art style and atmosphere; puzzles aren't difficult in general but the object hunting bits can get a bit tedious at times.”
  • replayability
    9 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game offers minimal replayability, with a short playtime of 2-3 hours and limited content that doesn't encourage multiple playthroughs. Some achievements require resets, but this is seen as a necessity rather than a feature enhancing replay value. Overall, the game is regarded as not justifying a full price purchase due to its lack of meaningful replay options.

    • “ Infinitely replayable”
    • “Not all achievements though, since some are time-based or number of moves based, I don't feel this has replay value to get those achievements.”
    • “~Replayability~”
    • “For me, there is no replay value.”
    • “The game is quite short (probably 2-3 hours) and there is not much replay value.”
    • “There's just not enough content and it's not nearly replayable enough to justify it.”
  • emotional
    7 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game offers a light, heartwarming, and wholesome emotional experience, with a minimalist and uplifting tone that may feel too understated for those seeking a more intense or cinematic narrative. Its charming story and bright, child-friendly presentation create a relaxing and motivating atmosphere.

    • “A heartwarming puzzle game of bermudic proportions!”
    • “This is a beautiful and touching game which I found very relaxing to play.”

    • “Nice style, funny puzzles.”
  • character development
    3 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Character development is conveyed subtly through brief dialogue snippets and environmental storytelling rather than detailed cutscenes, complemented by charming character designs and a warm, optimistic presentation enhanced by soft lighting and vibrant colors.

    • “The art style is a delightful blend of vibrant colours and delightful character design.”
    • “Milton’s story unfolds primarily through small snippets of dialogue and environmental storytelling rather than elaborate cutscenes or character development.”

Optimization is lacking, with no adjustable graphics or audio settings to improve performance or balance, despite decent visuals and stable gameplay without lag or stuttering.

    • “The graphics are nice (if you like this style) but poorly optimized.”
    • “There is a complete lack of any adjustable settings for both graphics and audio, despite being needed for performance and playability (the audio is very unbalanced for example).”

The game exhibits occasional clunky or buggy controls, but these issues do not significantly impact overall stability or gameplay experience.
