story
218 mentions Positive Neutral NegativeThe game's story is often described as incoherent and underdeveloped, relying heavily on collectibles like notes and diaries to convey its narrative, which some players found engaging while others deemed it insufficient. Many reviews highlight the short length of the game, typically around 2-3 hours, and suggest that familiarity with the associated movie is necessary for a clearer understanding of the plot. Overall, while the atmosphere and character backstory received praise, the execution of the story left many players wanting more depth and cohesion.
“Incredibly atmospheric all the way through, loved the epistolary style; as you progress through the game and collect letters and notes, the story begins to piece together.”
“The trope of a parent working to rescue their child is a very common one, but the complexity of the relationship portrayed here, and the backstory of the main character, do make this a strong example for characterization built up even with relatively little actual interaction between characters.”
“The story was well put together and the ending was awesome!”
“The story seemed poorly conceived and the game has little to no substance…if you saw the movie you kind of know what was going on but the game does not add anything to the story.”
“Put bluntly, without knowledge of the movie, this game's story feels like the writer just took some common horror tropes and haphazardly mashed them together.”
“The plot is so stereotypical that it is easy to grasp, but it's never explained why certain elements are there or how they connect.”
Don't Knock Twice Review
The scariest thing about Don't Knock Twice is how poorly it plays on the Nintendo Switch. Constant stuttering, clipping, and lag shatter immersion before it can even happen. Without the novelty of virtual reality, the manor is just another haunted house with bland puzzles to pad a painfully short campaign. Gameplay boils down to interacting with as many objects as possible in order to find the right item to proceed over and over again. The design of the manor itself is thoughtless and just a series of lifeless rooms that are more focused on tossing out as many horror clichés as possible instead of offering actual variety. Even if everything worked as intended, it would still be held back by an awkward, immersion-breaking control scheme. Don't think twice: don't buy Don't Knock Twice.

On a platform that is destined to become almost overcrowded with colourful, vibrant, ‘happy’ games, having a burst of horror as an option is very welcome indeed. Unfortunately, this isn’t the game to showcase the genre, nor is it one to showcase games in general. Some promising early moments left us with high hopes for this title – there were times where we felt genuine, edge-of-your-seat fear – but it soon becomes clear that it cannot live up to the standards it is trying to achieve. If you’re looking for a horror fix, maybe wait until something else comes along.
