The story of Devil May Cry 5 has received mixed reviews, with many praising its engaging and entertaining narrative that ties together elements from previous games in the series, particularly for long-time fans. While some players found the plot predictable and lacking depth, others appreciated its campy humor and character development, especially regarding the relationships between Dante, Nero, and the new character V. Overall, the story is seen as a fitting conclusion to the "Sons of Sparda" saga, though it may not resonate as strongly with newcomers unfamiliar with the franchise's lore.
“The story is captivating and the soundtrack is amazing, making it a truly immersive experience.”
“There is so much love put into this game, and it is just so full of small easter eggs that any DMC fan can appreciate while still having a very interesting and drama-filled story.”
“The story is well-written, with some cutscenes that are funny and others that are really deep, making for a well-rounded narrative.”
“But I guess DMC5 wasn’t supposed to make sense, and that’s where the telephone booths and the stupid plot enter.”
“The only reason I don’t give it a rating of 5 is because the game forces you to play with V for a few missions and he sucks.”
“The story is pretty short, but it makes up in gameplay and combat.”

The gameplay of Devil May Cry 5 has been widely praised for its depth, fluidity, and variety, offering players a rich combat experience with three distinct characters—Dante, Nero, and V—each with unique mechanics and playstyles. Many reviewers highlight the game's ability to balance accessibility for newcomers while providing a high skill ceiling for veterans, making it both engaging and rewarding. However, some criticism is directed at V's gameplay, which some players find less enjoyable compared to the other characters, and the overall story is considered secondary to the gameplay experience.
“This game is truly amazing, the graphics look gorgeous, the gameplay is fun, complex, and never gets boring. There are many cool playable characters with really great personalities, the story is captivating, and the soundtrack kicks ass!”
“The gameplay pumps adrenaline to the stars, and you don't need to like stylish games to enjoy this one, as many bosses and enemies are hard to beat, making it challenging even if you don't want to spend hours practicing to do everything with style.”
“V's character gameplay sucks, very slow, very boring, and we can't skip it, which takes the fun out of the DMC league.”
“The gameplay and combat are not very enjoyable.”
“The gameplay is a thrilling rollercoaster of stylish combat, where every swing of your sword and every blast from your gun feels exhilaratingly fluid.”

The music in "Devil May Cry 5" has received widespread acclaim for its dynamic and engaging soundtrack, which enhances the fast-paced combat and overall gameplay experience. Players appreciate the way the music intensifies as they achieve higher style ranks, creating a rewarding and immersive atmosphere. Iconic tracks like "Devil Trigger" and "Bury the Light" stand out, with many players expressing a desire to listen to the soundtrack outside of the game, solidifying its status as one of the best in the series.
“The soundtrack goes really well with the fast-paced combat, truly amazing.”
“The music is the best part of this game; it makes you want to stand up, smash the nearest demon, and just flex while doing it.”
“The soundtrack is an absolute banger, perfectly complementing the intense battles and epic moments throughout the game.”
“I really don't like the music or the general aesthetic of the game.”
“The music got on my nerves too, as it was the same song playing over and over again.”
“The soundtrack is appallingly out of touch with the style and attitude of the action sequences, the photo-realistic graphics feel out of place in this franchise.”

The graphics in "Devil May Cry 5" have received widespread acclaim for their stunning detail and vibrant aesthetics, powered by Capcom's RE Engine. Players have noted the game's ability to run smoothly even on lower-end hardware, while still delivering breathtaking visuals that enhance the overall experience. Despite some minor criticisms regarding color palettes and occasional graphical glitches, the consensus is that the graphics are among the best in the genre, contributing significantly to the game's appeal.
“The graphics are nothing short of breathtaking, with richly detailed environments that draw you into a world teeming with demonic chaos and grandeur.”
“The graphics are stunning and it has an amazing soundtrack.”
“The graphics are incredible, the re engine does this game wonders.”
“The graphics in this game are mediocre at best; the characters look good but the backgrounds, buildings, and decoration were very pixelated, plus the UI was also very pixelated, making it very hard to understand what correlated with what weapon.”
“The graphics are very detailed, but the design is somewhat boring.”
“The art style is really ugly, and some of the interface design just feels... prehistoric.”

The humor in "Devil May Cry 5" is widely praised for its self-aware, irreverent tone, featuring a mix of witty one-liners, absurd cutscenes, and quirky character interactions that enhance the overall experience. Players appreciate the balance between comedic moments and serious storytelling, with characters like Dante and Nico delivering memorable, often hilarious dialogue. While some find the humor to be cheesy or cringeworthy, the majority agree that it adds a fun, lighthearted layer to the game's intense action and stylish gameplay.
“The cutscenes are top-notch, and there were funny moments woven in that made the experience quite enjoyable.”
“The writing is witty and self-aware, maintaining the series' signature irreverent humor.”
“This game is the peak embodiment of what I wanted from this series: humor, style, music, attitude, and action.”
“Nero is still a soulless edge-lord with unfunny 'burns' in most of his dialogue, but there's f-bombs sprinkled in there this time, so our character arc has fully flatlined.”
“I watch/listen to this and think... ahm... this is supposed to be funny??”
“She is supposed to be the funny and smart type, but her jokes are hurtfully childish and blank.”

Devil May Cry 5 is widely praised for its high replayability, attributed to its diverse playable characters, multiple difficulty levels, and engaging combat mechanics that encourage mastery and experimentation. Players appreciate the game's short main campaign, which is designed for repeated playthroughs, especially on higher difficulties and in modes like the Bloody Palace. While some express a desire for more content and playable characters, the overall consensus is that the game offers immense replay value, making it a compelling choice for fans of the genre.
“The game has a lot of replay value, featuring 6 difficulties for the story, as well as the Bloody Palace (a gauntlet of sorts, of 100 'floors' of combat encounters with increasing difficulty).”
“With multiple characters to play as and various difficulty levels, Devil May Cry 5 offers strong replay value.”
“Endlessly replayable, and unlike the live services so many so-called AAA publishers are chasing after today, you'll want to keep coming back to this one because it's fun, and not 'cause it's been designed to 'maximize engagement' and keep you addicted and miserable.”
“The game lacks variety in other stuff like platforming or puzzle solving... although this does make the game much more replayable.”
“You can replay on harder difficulties, but you can't replay any mission as any character (even though you can play any mission as Vergil), which kills replay value for me.”
“For a game that is all about replayability, a cutscene-autoskip feature is mandatory.”

Overall, the optimization of the game has received mixed feedback from users. Many praise its excellent performance, particularly on lower-end PCs, with smooth gameplay and high frame rates, thanks to the RE Engine. However, concerns have been raised about the introduction of DRM, which has reportedly caused stuttering and performance drops for some players, leading to frustration and a recommendation against purchasing the PC version until these issues are resolved.
“Well optimized and runs perfectly on the Steam Deck.”
“Impressive graphics thanks to the RE engine, silky smooth gameplay that can easily climb as high as your monitor's refresh rate can handle on even older PCs thanks to great optimization.”
“The optimization is phenomenal; I run a 1080 Ti, 16GB RAM, and an i7 4790, with a 1440p 144Hz monitor, and the game runs 1440p at 110+ FPS stable on ultra settings.”
“The gameplay is fine; I wouldn't leave a negative review if it weren't for the audio, visual, and performance issues I have had constantly since first playing this game.”
“I love this game and have played it a lot on console, but I experienced an awful stuttering issue on PC that made the game virtually unplayable.”
“This game is fun and all, but performance-wise it really sucks; it keeps on crashing and it's frustrating when it happens while you are fighting a boss on a harder difficulty.”

The emotional aspect of the game is widely praised, with many players expressing that it elicited strong feelings ranging from laughter to tears, particularly during key narrative moments and character interactions. Longtime fans appreciate the depth and heartwarming themes, especially regarding family dynamics, while newcomers find the emotional weight somewhat dependent on their familiarity with the series. Overall, the combination of a compelling story, memorable characters, and an impactful soundtrack contributes to a deeply engaging emotional experience.
“I laughed, I cried, and every single second I loved and adored this game.”
“The story has emotional moments that hit you because of how much you can't help but love the characters, and it fits the wild and chaotic gameplay.”
“This game made me cry of joy as a hardcore long-time fan.”
“Boring story and ending.”
“Honestly, the story was kinda mixed for me. The beginning is very meh and somewhat boring. Sure, the gameplay is great, the graphics are beautiful, and the setting is great, but if I'm being honest, the story isn't really all that interesting during the first hours. You try to stop a new villain, get your ass kicked, retreat, and do some chores to try and kill the Qliphot enemies or something. The story only gets good later on when Dante is more involved, especially since you learn that Nero is Vergil's son. The reason why Vergil is so obsessed with power is because he thought his mother died trying to save Dante and not him. That's why he thinks might controls everything and that without strength you can't protect anyone (his mother), let alone himself. The new character is Vergil's human side. Unfortunately, this only happens near the end. Overall, the story was decent, but I feel like there were a lot of boring story segments before you actually got to the great parts, and the dialogue/writing overall was quite meh.”

The grinding aspect of the game has received mixed reviews, with many players finding it tedious and repetitive, particularly due to the lack of varied environments and the necessity of multiple playthroughs to unlock content. While some appreciate the rewarding nature of grinding for upgrades and style points, others criticize it for detracting from the overall enjoyment, making the gameplay feel like a chore rather than a challenge. Despite these criticisms, some players still find joy in the combat mechanics and the thrill of mastering character abilities through grinding.
“You'll need a second life for grinding.”
“A bit grindy sometimes.”
“A bit grindy.”
“The environments are nowhere near interesting or varied enough to not make subsequent playthroughs feel tedious sometimes, especially in the downtime between fights.”
“Really in two minds about this game: great combat system burdened by unnecessarily grindy character progression; beautiful environment backdrops centered with unimaginative average stage designs; fun and colorful characters overshadowed by pretty anti-climactic endings.”
“In order to unlock the harder difficulties you have to repeatedly play through the game...and just like in DMC4, this becomes incredibly tedious.”

Character development in "Devil May Cry 5" receives mixed reviews, with many praising the engaging arcs of characters like Nero and V, while others feel that some characters, such as Trish and Lady, are underutilized. The game is noted for its stunning character designs and visuals, but some players express disappointment in the pacing and depth of character development, suggesting that gameplay often takes precedence over narrative progression. Overall, while there are standout moments and intriguing twists, the character development is seen as inconsistent, with some characters receiving more attention than others.
“The story, voice acting, emotion, atmosphere, and character development/personalities were incredibly well thought out.”
“Devil May Cry 5 improves on a lot of things; the story, the character development, the fun factor, and it makes the franchise a little bit easier to get into.”
“By far one of the best ways to treat the genre, great character development and power progression, and has that hint of uniqueness that really sets it apart.”
“There's like zero character development; it's like they focused on the gameplay more than the story.”
“Whatever character development is had at all in this game is entirely last-second, out of left-field, and serves no real purpose other than to provide some 'deus ex machina' plot points.”
“I do not wish to spoil anything, but let me just put it like this: the ending felt as if the devs were forced to wrap things up ASAP and just let the potential for much more character development and drama go to waste.”

The monetization in the game has drawn mixed reactions, with many players criticizing the presence of microtransactions, particularly for in-game currency, as unnecessary and reminiscent of a cash grab. However, several reviews note that these microtransactions are largely optional and do not significantly impact gameplay, as players can earn the necessary resources through regular play. Overall, while the inclusion of microtransactions is seen as a downside, it does not detract from the game's enjoyment for most players.
“Despite the inclusion of microtransactions, everything in the game is pretty easy to obtain with a little playing.”
“Don't stress the microtransactions; there is no need to get them as the game allows you to get everything for free just by putting in the work.”
“Microtransactions are so minor it's kind of surprising Capcom bothered at all.”
“A pile of caca. It's just one big cash grab to get people to buy orbs from the store.”
“Although the game is brilliant, the characters are great and funny and the combat is fantastic, the game had Denuvo (as usual for Capcom's games), they put microtransactions, skins, and an entire character (without new maps, cutscenes, or dialogue, just the character) as DLC, and you need to pay 115€ for the whole experience.”
“The microtransactions are a pain, but if you're even remotely good at the game, they can be safely ignored.”

“The perfect game to play on my lunch break at work on my Steam Deck, no glitches whatsoever and a really solid story thus far.”
“Game is smooth and bug free in my play-through.”
“It runs great on my system with no frame drops or stability issues.”
“Terribly buggy game that constantly makes me take damage while I clearly dodged it.”
“14 hours of troubleshooting later from reinstalling my drivers, all the way to the most extreme option of fully reinstalling Windows... the crashes persist. Literally tried everything that was recommended.”
“However, this PC version has multiple issues. In the time I've played, I've had to deal with multiple crashes, freezes, and my controller becoming completely unresponsive at certain times.”

The atmosphere in "Devil May Cry 5" is a mixed bag, with many praising its vibrant graphics, engaging soundtrack, and unique settings that enhance the gameplay experience. While some players appreciate the modern urban aesthetic and dynamic environments, others feel it lacks the gothic charm and depth of earlier entries in the series. Overall, the game successfully creates an immersive atmosphere, though opinions vary on its effectiveness compared to its predecessors.
“Y'all gotta play this game, the atmosphere, music, gameplay are fire. Even though the game was released 5 years ago, I'm still getting goosebumps after doing combos.”
“The graphics, setting, and atmosphere are built and polished to perfection.”
“The soundtrack and sound effects in Devil May Cry 5 are top-notch, enhancing the overall atmosphere and adding to the intensity of battles.”
“But the overall setting, atmosphere, and places are a bit dull, just tentacles and blisters all around most of the time.”
“Art direction and atmosphere are poor about 80% of the time.”
“Everything has the same texture, with the same atmosphere and all... encounter, go for the next room, encounter... go for the next room, encounter... oh, a telephone!”
