The story of Devil May Cry 5 is generally regarded as engaging and entertaining, though opinions vary on its depth and execution. Many players appreciate the character-driven narrative that ties together elements from previous games, providing a satisfying conclusion to the "Sons of Sparda" saga, while newcomers can still enjoy the story thanks to a recap feature. However, some critiques highlight that the story can feel predictable, rushed, or overly simplistic, with certain character arcs, particularly for V, feeling underdeveloped. Overall, while the story may not be the main draw for all players, it complements the game's fast-paced and stylish combat effectively.
“This game is truly amazing; the graphics look gorgeous, the gameplay is fun, complex, and never gets boring. The story is captivating and the soundtrack kicks ass!”
“There is so much love put into this game, and it is just so full of small easter eggs that any DMC fan can appreciate while still having a very interesting and drama-filled story.”
“The story is well-written, with some cutscenes that are funny and others that are really deep.”
“But I guess DMC5 wasn’t supposed to make sense, and that’s where the telephone booths and the stupid plot enter.”
“The only reason I don’t give it a rating of 5 is because the game forces you to play with V for a few missions and he sucks.”
“The story is pretty short but it makes up in gameplay and combat.”

The gameplay of Devil May Cry 5 is widely praised for its fluidity, depth, and variety, offering players a rich combat experience with three distinct characters—Dante, Nero, and V—each with unique mechanics and playstyles. Many reviewers highlight the game's ability to balance accessibility for newcomers while providing a high skill ceiling for veterans, making it both engaging and rewarding. However, some criticism is directed at V's gameplay, which is perceived as less enjoyable compared to the other characters, and the overall story is considered weaker than previous entries in the series.
“This game is truly amazing, the graphics look gorgeous, the gameplay is fun, complex and never gets boring, there are many cool playable characters with really great personalities, the story is captivating and the soundtrack kicks ass, I haven't heard such a good soundtrack in a long time!”
“The gameplay pumps adrenaline to the stars, and you don't need to like stylish games to enjoy this one, as many bosses and enemies are hard to beat, making it challenging even if you don't wanna spend hours practicing to do everything with style.”
“The gameplay is a thrilling rollercoaster of stylish combat, where every swing of your sword and every blast from your gun feels exhilaratingly fluid.”
“V's gameplay sucks, very slow, very boring and we can't skip it, takes the fun out of the DMC league.”
“The gameplay and combat is not very enjoyable.”
“The only real flaw I can think of is V's gameplay, it's too automated on normal and the lack of control I can see being a huge deal on the hard modes so I avoid him whenever possible.”

The music in "Devil May Cry 5" has received widespread acclaim for its dynamic and engaging soundtrack, which enhances the fast-paced combat and overall gameplay experience. Players appreciate the variety of character themes, with standout tracks like "Devil Trigger" and "Bury the Light" being particularly popular. The soundtrack not only complements the action but also adapts in intensity based on the player's performance, making it a key element of the game's appeal.
“The soundtrack goes really well with the fast-paced combat, truly amazing.”
“The music perfectly syncs with the intense battles, amplifying the adrenaline rush and making every fight feel powerful.”
“The soundtrack is an absolute banger, perfectly complementing the intense battles and epic moments throughout the game.”
“I really don't like the music or the general aesthetic of the game.”
“The music got on my nerves too, as it was the same song playing over and over again.”
“The soundtrack is appallingly out of touch with the style and attitude of the action sequences, the photo-realistic graphics feel out of place in this franchise, v is a terribly unenjoyable character to play, even the story is just a reimagining of dmc3, but the combat doesn't feel as well designed and executed as previous installments.”

Players have noted the game's ability to deliver breathtaking environments and character models, often describing the graphics as some of the best in gaming, with smooth performance even on lower-end hardware. While some critiques mention a lack of variety in level design and occasional graphical glitches, the overall consensus is that the graphics significantly enhance the gameplay experience, making it a standout title in the action genre.
“The graphics are nothing short of breathtaking, with richly detailed environments that draw you into a world teeming with demonic chaos and grandeur.”
“The graphics are stunning, thanks to the RE engine, and the soundtrack, especially 'Devil Trigger,' keeps you pumped.”
“The graphics, setting, and atmosphere are built and polished to perfection.”
“This game feels as if it was an indie game made with slightly better voice acting and overall decent graphics (it lacks in some scenarios, like really).”
“The graphics in this game are mediocre at best; the characters look good but the backgrounds, buildings, and decoration were very pixelated, plus the UI was also very pixelated making it very hard to understand what correlated with what weapon.”
“The graphics are acceptable, but visually and thematically not really exciting to me in any way.”

The humor in "Devil May Cry 5" is widely praised for its self-aware, irreverent tone, featuring a mix of witty one-liners, absurd cutscenes, and quirky character interactions that keep the gameplay light-hearted and entertaining. Players enjoy the comedic dynamics between characters like Dante, Nero, and Nico, with many noting that the humor complements the game's flashy combat and engaging story. While some find the humor to be cringeworthy or overly cheesy, the majority appreciate its ability to balance serious moments with laugh-out-loud absurdity, making it a memorable experience.
“The cutscenes are top-notch, and there were funny moments woven in that made the experience quite enjoyable.”
“The writing is witty and self-aware, maintaining the series' signature irreverent humor.”
“This game is the peak embodiment of what I wanted from this series: humor, style, music, attitude, and action.”
“Nero is still a soulless edge-lord with unfunny 'burns' in most of his dialogue, but there's f-bombs sprinkled in there this time, so our character arc has fully flatlined.”
“Dante became very dull and unfunny.”
“She is supposed to be the funny and smart type, but her jokes are hurtfully childish and blank.”

Devil May Cry 5 is widely praised for its high replayability, attributed to its diverse character mechanics, multiple difficulty levels, and engaging combat system. Players can enjoy the game repeatedly by mastering combos, tackling higher challenges, and exploring the "Bloody Palace" mode, which offers extensive content beyond the main campaign. While some players note the game's short length, the overall consensus is that the replay value is significant, making it a compelling choice for fans of the genre.
“Endlessly replayable, and unlike the live services so many so-called AAA publishers are chasing after today, you'll want to keep coming back to this one because it's fun, and not 'cause it's been designed to 'maximize engagement' and keep you addicted and miserable.”
“With multiple characters to play as and various difficulty levels, Devil May Cry 5 offers strong replay value.”
“The game has a lot of replay value, featuring 6 difficulties for the story, as well as the Bloody Palace (a gauntlet of sorts, of 100 'floors' of combat encounters with increasing difficulty).”
“Great fun game but the replayability is quite annoying.”
“You can replay on harder difficulties, but you can't replay any mission as any character (even though you can play any mission as Vergil) which kills replay value for me.”
“I already finished the game and to be honest, there is no replay value.”

Overall, the optimization of the game is highly praised, with many users reporting smooth performance even on lower-end hardware, thanks to the capabilities of the RE Engine. However, some players have experienced issues related to stuttering, particularly after updates or due to the implementation of DRM, which has negatively impacted performance for certain configurations. Despite these concerns, the majority of reviews highlight the game's excellent graphics and stable frame rates, making it a well-optimized experience overall.
“Well optimized and runs perfectly on the Steam Deck.”
“Great game, well optimized; I have not had any bugs ever since I had the game. Capcom did a very good job with this and the Resident Evil games, as I was able to run them on a low-end PC before I had this PC I have right now.”
“Incredible optimization. The performance is excellent with frame rates going above 100 fps @1080p (playing on a 1070).”
“The gameplay is fine, I wouldn't leave a negative review if it weren't for the audio, visual, and performance issues I have had constantly since first playing this game.”
“I can't recommend the PC version of this game until they fix the stuttering errors with DirectX 12 and constant crashing issues.”
“This game stutters like crazy no matter what optimization you do; Capcom does this to all their products. They don't even put a half refresh rate option like in Shadow of the Tomb Raider.”

The emotional aspect of "Devil May Cry 5" resonates deeply with players, often eliciting strong reactions such as laughter and tears throughout its narrative. Many reviews highlight the game's ability to evoke nostalgia and connection to beloved characters, with heartfelt moments and impactful dialogue that leave a lasting impression, particularly for long-time fans of the series. The combination of a dynamic story, engaging character interactions, and a powerful soundtrack enhances the emotional experience, making it a memorable journey for players.
“I laughed, I cried, and every single second I loved and adored this game.”
“The story has emotional moments that hit you because of how much you can't help but love the characters, and it fits the wild and chaotic gameplay.”
“This game made me cry of joy as a hardcore long-time fan.”
“Honestly, the story was kinda mixed for me. The beginning is very meh and somewhat boring. Sure, gameplay is great, the graphics are beautiful, and the setting is great, but if I'm being honest, the story isn't really all that interesting during the first hours. You try to stop a new villain, get your ass kicked, retreat, and do some chores to try and kill the Qliphot enemies or something. The story only gets good later on when Dante is more involved, especially since you learn that Nero is Vergil's son. The reason why Vergil is so obsessed with power is because he thought his mother died trying to save Dante and not him. That's why he thinks might controls everything, and without strength, you can't protect anyone (his mother), let alone himself. V, the new character, is Vergil's human side. Unfortunately, this only happens near the end. Overall, the story was decent, but I feel like there were a lot of boring story segments before you actually got to the great parts, and the dialogue/writing overall was quite meh.”
“Boring story and ending.”
“Boring storyline.”

The grinding aspect of the game has received mixed feedback, with many players finding it tedious and repetitive, particularly during character progression and boss fights. While some appreciate the rewarding nature of grinding for style points and upgrades, others criticize the lack of variety in environments and the necessity of multiple playthroughs to unlock content, leading to a sense of monotony. Overall, the experience can feel burdensome, especially on higher difficulty settings, though some players still find enjoyment in the combat mechanics and farming techniques.
“You'll need a second life for grinding.”
“A bit grindy sometimes.”
“A bit grindy.”
“The environments are nowhere near interesting or varied enough to not make subsequent playthroughs feel tedious sometimes, especially in the downtime between fights.”
“In order to unlock the harder difficulties you have to repeatedly play through the game...and just like in dmc4, this becomes incredibly tedious.”
“Being forced to sit through the same gameplay loop, the terrible combat, and the boring design for 7 entire playthroughs plus additional grindy nonsense is just too much for my tolerance level.”

Character development in "Devil May Cry 5" receives mixed reviews, with some players praising the growth of characters like Nero and V, while others feel that many characters, including Dante, lack significant development. The game's narrative is often described as engaging, but some critics argue that it prioritizes gameplay over deeper storytelling, resulting in underutilized characters and a rushed conclusion. Overall, while the character designs are widely celebrated, the depth of character development varies, leaving some players wanting more.
“The story, voice acting, emotion, atmosphere, and character development/personalities were incredibly well thought out.”
“Devil May Cry 5 improves on a lot of things; the story, the character development, the fun factor, and it makes the franchise a little bit easier to get into.”
“By far one of the best ways to treat the genre, great character development and power progression and has that hint of uniqueness that really sets it apart.”
“There's like zero character development; it's like they focused on the gameplay more than the story.”
“Whatever character development is had at all in this game is entirely last-second, out of the left-field, and serves no real purpose other than to provide some 'deus ex machina' plot points.”
“I do not wish to spoil anything, but let me just put it like this: the ending felt as if the devs were forced to wrap things up ASAP and just let the potential for much more character development and drama go to waste.”

The monetization in the game has drawn mixed reactions, with many players criticizing the presence of microtransactions as unnecessary and indicative of a cash grab, particularly in a single-player context. However, several reviews note that these microtransactions are largely optional and do not significantly impact gameplay, as players can earn in-game currency through regular play. Overall, while the microtransactions are seen as a downside, they are not viewed as intrusive or essential for enjoying the game.
“Despite the inclusion of microtransactions, everything in the game is pretty easy to obtain with a little playing.”
“Don't stress the microtransactions; there is no need to get them as the game allows you to get everything for free just by putting in the work.”
“9.7/10 recommendation for anyone that is a fan of spectacle fighters, the original Devil May Cry games, or just looking for a game that is not your standard triple-A copy-paste boring job, only losing 0.3 due to the presence of optional microtransactions that are nowhere near needed to enjoy the game.”
“A pile of caca. It's just one big cash grab to get people to buy orbs from the store.”
“Although the game is brilliant, the characters are great and funny and the combat is fantastic, the game had Denuvo (as usual for Capcom's games), they put microtransactions, skins, and an entire character (without new maps, cutscenes, or dialogue, just the character) as DLC, and you need to pay 115€ for the whole experience.”
“Single player game with microtransactions is a big minus.”

The stability of the game has received mixed reviews, with many players reporting significant bugs, glitches, and crashes, particularly on the PC version. While some users have experienced smooth gameplay without issues, others have faced persistent freezing, graphical glitches, and unresponsive controls, leading to frustration. Overall, the game's stability appears to vary widely depending on the platform and individual system configurations.
“The perfect game to play on my lunch break at work on my Steam Deck, no glitches whatsoever and a really solid story thus far.”
“Game is smooth and bug free in my play-through.”
“It runs great on my system with no frame drops or stability issues.”
“14 hours of troubleshooting later from reinstalling my drivers, all the way to the most extreme option of fully reinstalling Windows... the crashes persist. I literally tried everything that was recommended (forcing DirectX 11, forcing DirectX 12, making the file read-only, testing RAM for errors, GPU for errors, CPU for errors, unplugging my entire system, dusting every cable, asking ChatGPT so many questions that I exceeded my maximum for 24 hours in a window of 9 hours, deleting and reinstalling Adobe, Steam + all games, NVIDIA, and Windows...)”
“However, this PC version has multiple issues. In the time I've played, I've had to deal with multiple crashes, freezes, and my controller becoming completely unresponsive at certain times.”
“The game freezes on the prologue just after Nero says 'Dante' quite passionately, and suddenly the game freezes, sticking me into a true hell, proving that indeed devils can cry. Also, fix this before I burst a blood vessel or something like that, please.”

Overall, while the game excels in visual and auditory elements, opinions vary on its atmospheric impact compared to its predecessors.

“The graphics, setting, and atmosphere are built and polished to perfection.”
“The soundtrack and sound effects in Devil May Cry 5 are top-notch, enhancing the overall atmosphere and adding to the intensity of battles.”
“But the overall setting, atmosphere, and places are a bit dull, just tentacles and blisters all around most of the time.”
“Art direction and atmosphere are bad about 80% of the time.”
“Capcom's artists were probably doing this to create a darker atmosphere, but it just makes it look too bland for my taste.”
