The story in the game is widely criticized for being weak and poorly executed, with many reviewers noting its repetitive missions and lack of engaging narrative elements. While there are hints of intriguing lore, the overall storytelling is hampered by poor voice acting, lengthy loading times, and a failure to effectively integrate story elements into gameplay. Players are left feeling that the narrative is underdeveloped and fails to motivate them through the game's content.
“There's a rich yet under-emphasized fiction at work here.”
“Lore and story is intriguing, it's a ton of fun with friends, and there are tons of hidden secrets that create epic moments.”
“As it stands now, it feels like a strong foundation coupled with a thin story and some baffling missteps on the MMO aspects of the formula.”

“But there are many design concerns which bog down the experience, from the boring story to the underdeveloped MMO concepts and dull mission design.”

“As it is though, Bungie's latest provides a fun distraction without the staying power its mechanical prowess deserves.”

Players find the grinding aspect of the game to be tedious and repetitive, often involving the same missions and encounters, particularly at the endgame where they face bullet-sponge bosses repeatedly. The lack of engaging storytelling and poor voice acting further detracts from the experience, while lengthy loading times and unbalanced missions add to the frustration. Although co-op strikes offer some relief, the overall grind remains a significant drawback.
“Repetitive missions containing repetitive encounters, abysmal storytelling that makes you unlock and seek out basic plot elements, and the endgame has you grinding the same bullet-sponge bosses over and over again.”
“Endless repetition of the same 20-minute mission formula. Grinding beyond level 20 can be particularly arduous and isn’t explained well.”
“The co-op strikes and the random operations break this tedious feel, but you should still expect some lengthy loading screens and a fair amount of unbalanced missions or strikes.”

Destiny feels like the key elements of an FPS and an MMO gently resting shoulder to shoulder, instead of being fused together in a truly creative way. It plays and looks great, and offers many, many hours of entertainment to anyone okay with repeating the same tasks, but it isn’t exactly the game-changing science fiction epic we felt it was aspiring to. Fortunately, that doesn’t diminish the fact that there’s a fantastic social experience here, one that we hope will only improve further with future events and DLC. In our opinion, Destiny is at its absolute best when the odds stacked against you require teamwork to overcome, and there’s no shortage of those moments.
