Baby Steps

Baby Steps surpassed all my expectations and even small grievances to become a thrilling, trying and memorable journey about being better and learning to ask for help. It’s certainly one of the harder ‘one of those’ types of ragebait climbing games, but each step it makes in tackling this niche is as deliberate as the ones you’re making as the clumsy Nate. What’s within is a refinement of the subgenre, providing a layered and surprisingly poignant world and story to explore. Bennett Foddy and co. have made their opus here, and even with every plummet and misstep I made, I had the best experience in the space I’ve ever had, uniquely hating, loving, loathing and delighting in it. If the devs are reading this, I hate you guys. But also, I bloody love you.

  • Unique and refined control system offering satisfying and nuanced leg movement mastery.
  • Expansive and well-designed open world encouraging exploration and multiple path choices, with a lot of hidden secrets and humorous cutscenes.
  • Deep narrative and character development underlying a funny, absurd, and relatable story addressing themes of depression, social anxiety, and personal growth.
  • Frustrating and punishing difficulty that can involve significant loss of progress and repeated backtracking, which may test player patience.
  • Occasional inconsistent and unpredictable physics causing falls without clear player fault leading to perceived unfairness.
  • Lack of traditional game rewards for many challenges and items; cutscenes cannot always be skipped easily, which some find annoying and affects pacing.
  • humor
    276 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The humor in the game is widely praised for its absurd, awkward, and often crude style, featuring hilarious cutscenes, improvised dialogue, and amusing character interactions that blend comedy with deeper, sometimes poignant themes. While many find the humor smart, relatable, and integral to the game's charm, others feel it is juvenile, repetitive, or hit-or-miss depending on personal taste and tolerance for the challenging gameplay. Overall, the humor significantly enhances the experience, providing frequent laughs amid the game's frustration and difficulty.

    • “The humor in the game is fantastic, both in the improvised character interactions and in the environment and mechanics themselves.”
    • “Genuinely funny, both within gameplay and character writing; some fantastically delivered lines and animations here.”
    • “One more thing about those cutscenes and the story generally: the way the absurd humor and serious themes dovetail is some of the best I've seen in games.”
    • “Nope, it's tedious, boring, and so annoying to the point it's not funny. YouTubers make this game look easy.”
    • “Tiring and unfunny.”
    • “While most of the easily found challenges are good exercises in skill, some of them are like a joke that goes on for far too long, becoming unfunny in the process.”
  • gameplay
    205 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay centers around a unique, intentionally challenging walking mechanic that rewards mastering precise, deliberate movements, offering a mix of frustration and satisfaction akin to titles like "Getting Over It." While some find the punishing physics and progress loss tedious or inconsistent, others praise its depth, humor, and immersive exploration, highlighting a finely tuned balance of difficulty, nuance, and narrative integration that makes each step a meaningful challenge. Overall, the gameplay is simple to learn but hard to master, appealing to players who enjoy skill-based, unconventional mechanics wrapped in a distinctive, often humorous experience.

    • “The mechanics take a little to get used to but it is very rewarding once you master it.”
    • “Seriously though, amazing game, unique and engaging mechanics, easy to learn, hard to master, the walking is surprisingly addicting, it's so satisfying as you get better and overcome more challenging obstacles, by the time you complete your first playthrough you'll be scaling walls and scurrying in ways you would have thought impossible at the beginning of your first playthrough!”
    • “There's so much masterful game design on display here, and the singular focus on walking as the only game mechanic means that it's been polished to a mirror sheen.”
    • “For a game that's supposed to be about fine tuned movement and careful stepping, having drastically different results for what happens when you plant your feet then move in the same place with same angles and same velocities is just straight up the developer's inability to code physics and contempt for the player disguised as 'difficult gameplay'.”
    • “Many optional challenges are scattered around which can add difficulty if desired but it is often in those sections where the game reveals its disregard for mechanical difficulty in favour of an artificial frustration.”
    • “As a game, I represent the player base that will be completely turned off by the intentionally-punitive, trollish gameplay, cemented by iron-man forced saving, like, every few seconds, so there's no way to circumvent losses and avoid the repeated falls/slides down, followed by 5-15-second ragdolls, followed by repeating what you just spent anywhere from minutes to hours doing all over again.”
  • story
    186 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The story in this game is widely regarded as quirky, humorous, and surprisingly deep, blending absurd comedy with poignant themes of personal growth, insecurity, and emotional struggle. While some find the narrative compelling and emotionally resonant, others see it as uneven or overshadowed by crude humor and frustrating gameplay. Overall, the story offers a unique, thought-provoking experience that enhances the game's unconventional mechanics and challenges.

    • “Story and gameplay better than Death Stranding.”
    • “Baby Steps is a very poignant, dark, and honest story wrapped up in a goofy and crude rage-bait game, which is sad because the difficulty and crudeness will only appeal to a small portion of the gaming population, but the story is so heartfelt that it really needs to be discussed in greater detail.”
    • “Every time you fall Nate (the main character) lets out disappointed sighs and swears as if he is actually disappointed or angry; this story has unexpected plot twists and emotional development as Nate learns why he is in this situation in the first place. At first this seems like a silly game, but deep down it merges maturity and emotional development with a deep story.”
    • “The story is largely missing.”
    • “The skip-resistant cutscenes are an original idea that's funny in theory but really illustrate what's wrong with the game: it punishes you for liking it and wanting to play more, trying to teach you some kind of lesson about patience even if you've completed the story multiple times and just wanted to replay or try new challenges.”
    • “Tldr, the gameplay can be fun, the story sucked arse, and although I would recommend this to anyone who likes rage games, I'm not touching this game with a 39.5 foot pole after my first playthrough.”
  • music
    60 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The music of the game is highly unconventional, consisting mainly of experimental, nature-based sounds and animal noises that create a quirky, immersive atmosphere but can also be perceived as grating or distracting. While some players appreciate its unique and avant-garde style that enhances the game’s mood and rhythm, others find it irritating enough to turn off. Overall, the soundtrack is a bold creative choice that divides opinion, praised for originality but criticized for its intentional oddity and repetitiveness.

    • “The "music" in this game is also wild; maxi boch and team did an amazing job building something both unique, dynamic, and fitting to the game.”
    • “Throughout the game, it feels like the music is picking up on the rhythm of Nate's walking, and it really sets the mood in a way that is unique to games.”
    • “The sound design and ambient music is absolutely phenomenal.”
    • “What I really didn’t like though was that significant time is just spent struggling to walk through this game’s large expanse of emptiness that is its open world, where you have to press down on the triggers over and over till your fingers hurt, staring at Nate and his ass jiggle physics as you try to keep him from tripping and falling every couple seconds, often getting turned around cause there’s not much sense of direction, and not even having any background music to accompany you beyond droning nature sounds.”
    • “The 'music' is god awful; it's literally just semi-rhythmic grunts and squeaks, but you can just turn it off and not really lose anything.”
    • “Also the soundtrack for this game seems designed to annoy you, like it will just play barnyard sounds over and over or drip drop noises, why.”
  • emotional
    44 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game delivers a surprisingly deep and emotionally resonant experience beneath its frustrating, rage-inducing gameplay, addressing themes like masculinity, loneliness, and personal growth. Players often describe a heartfelt connection to the protagonist's journey, blending humor, vulnerability, and poignant moments that evoke a wide range of emotions from frustration to genuine warmth and accomplishment. This emotional complexity, combined with its unique narrative and challenging mechanics, makes it a memorable and impactful experience for those willing to embrace its difficulty and tone.

    • “The emotional experience Baby Steps provides conducts a full orchestra of human feeling.”
    • “The story, simple, clear and unexpectedly heartfelt.”
  • graphics
    16 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's graphics are generally praised for their unique aesthetic, charming and well-designed visuals, and impressive cutscenes, with smooth performance and no major technical issues at launch. While not groundbreaking, the graphics effectively support the game's quirky style and immersive world, though some players find visual cues insufficient for precise gameplay moments. Overall, the graphics contribute positively to the game's distinctive and enjoyable experience.

    • “Thank you to the developer team for harnessing the full potential of the graphics engine, optimizing this game for a life-altering time... every time.”
    • “There are side objectives, awesome and goofy cutscenes, amazing voice acting, good story, very beautiful graphics and world to slowly explore and collectibles to collect :)”
    • “I haven't seen any bugs, crashes, or even graphical glitches - which is incredible for launch day of an open world game.”
    • “Graphically it is alright, voice acting and script is bad, almost The Room bad but I think it was done on purpose.”
    • “The visuals aren't out of this world, but the game has some charm and runs flawlessly on the Steam Deck; a few times I was hitting mid 50s fps, but generally a solid 60 fps.”
    • “The controls are not precise enough for what this game demands sometimes, or rather the visuals make it hard to know precisely where your feet are going to land, which gets pretty important after an hour or so.”
  • grinding
    13 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The grinding in this game is widely described as tedious, repetitive, and frustrating due to slow traversal, frequent failures, and the need to retrace steps. While some players find a certain satisfaction or catharsis in the challenge and deliberate difficulty, many feel the excessive grinding detracts from the overall experience and may be off-putting for those who prefer more streamlined gameplay.

    • “Nope, it's tedious, boring, and so annoying to the point it's not funny; YouTubers make this game look easy.”
    • “I tried for hours to get the cup, but the ledges were always just a little too high and thin, causing me to fall back down to repeat the tedious climbing sequence over and over.”
    • “You can and will lose a lot of progress and be forced to retrace a lot of wobbly, tedious steps to get back to what you were trying to do, which itself might be challenging enough to require many attempts that will inevitably fail.”
  • replayability
    9 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game offers high replayability through multiple paths, optional challenges, and secondary mission achievements that encourage exploration and varied playstyles. Its immersive story, hidden content, and customizable progression create a personalized experience that invites repeated playthroughs, despite some players finding the scope overwhelming. However, the absence of user-generated content like custom levels slightly limits its long-term replay potential.

    • “Inspiring, meditative, immersive, and very entertaining/challenging with lots of replayability.”
    • “The story is quirky fun and has lots of replay value because of the secondary mission achievements (avoid in your first playthrough honestly, they're very difficult and require precise inputs).”
    • “Your one goal is up but it doesn't specify how you are meant to go up; watching people's playthroughs and seeing them go completely different ways that I didn't even think possible really shows off the insane replayability of this baby steps.”
  • optimization
    6 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Optimization in the game is generally solid, with good graphics and performance settings like FSR enabled by default, though user experiences vary. Some players report smooth performance without stutters, while others face severe issues such as crashes and hard locks. Overall, optimization is decent but may suffer from occasional stability problems.

    • “There are also some serious performance issues that result in the game completely locking up, causing hard locks or crashing my PC.”
    • “It also comes with FSR (I could not tell you which one) set to performance out of the box as well.”
    • “Performance doesn't seem to be a common complaint and I don't get stutters every session, so your mileage may vary, but other negative reviews have mentioned deleted saves, so I hope that gets resolved soon.”
  • atmosphere
    5 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's atmosphere is generally praised for its zen-like ambience, immersive sound design, and effective voice acting, creating a compelling backdrop that enhances the gameplay experience. However, some find the experimental music distracting, and the tone can range from silly to awkward, adding unique character but occasionally affecting immersion. Overall, the atmosphere contributes significantly to both the mood and sense of progress in the game.

    • “The tedium of the game pushes the player to deep frustration, but the atmosphere and sense of progress one can achieve in patient persistence makes the struggle truly feel worth it.”
    • “Very zen, nice ambience and atmosphere set a great backdrop to the walking mechanics and top notch voice acting.”
    • “The ambient sounds that form the 'soundtrack' add to the atmosphere of the game.”
    • “Awkward humor, silly atmosphere, and simple controls turn up the difficulty.”
    • “The tedium of the game pushes the player to deep frustration, though the atmosphere and sense of progress reward patient persistence.”
  • stability
    5 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game runs smoothly with no significant bugs, crashes, or graphical glitches, even on the Steam Deck. While generally stable, a few minor glitches were noted that affected gameplay consistency. Overall, stability is commendable, especially for an open-world launch title.

    • “First of all, runs great on Steam Deck.”
    • “Runs great, controls are incredibly smooth, and there are no gimmicks.”
    • “The inconsistency was bad enough but on top of that were a couple of glitches that propelled me off the ledge when I should've simply fallen backwards.”
  • character development
    4 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Character development in the game is generally praised for its depth, meaningful tone, and rich narrative, though some criticize certain characters for lacking growth. Unique and compelling designs further enhance the experience. However, elements like gratuitous content and poorly developed characters can detract from the overall appeal for some players.

    • “The comedic timing of jokes, the character development, and even the more meaningful underlying tone of what is being said is the treat you get for the parts that frustrated you.”
    • “Very easy learning curve with amazing compelling story, rich character development and immersive narrative.”
    • “The gratuitous nudity and cuck main character with zero character development really detract from the game overall.”
  • monetization
    2 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Users express concern over the removal of a demo as a significant negative, viewing it as a bigger issue than the presence of NFTs, microtransactions, or stolen assets.

    • “The removal of a demo is an even bigger red flag for me than if it was filled with NFTs, microtransactions, or stolen assets.”
