About
X-Out: Resurfaced is a single player and multiplayer shooter game. It was developed by Rainbow Arts and was released on February 19, 2025. It received mostly positive reviews from critics and overwhelmingly positive reviews from players.
X-Out: Resurfaced is a challenging underwater shoot ’em up where you battle an alien invasion beneath the ocean. Featuring side-scrolling action, it stands out with a unique shop system that lets you customize ships, weapons, and accessories for varied gameplay. Dive into intense aquatic combat with a modern remake of this legendary classic.

- The game is a faithful and well-executed remaster of the original Amiga classic, featuring updated graphics and a remastered soundtrack by Chris Hülsbeck that enhances the nostalgic experience.
- Ship customization adds depth to the gameplay, allowing players to experiment with different loadouts and strategies, making it engaging and fun.
- Quality of life improvements, such as faster loading times and a more intuitive shop system, make the game more accessible while retaining its challenging nature.
- The game lacks modern quality of life features, such as continues or difficulty selection, which can make it frustrating for new players.
- Some players feel that the game is too short, with a quick completion time that may not justify the purchase for those seeking a longer experience.
- The introduction of a trainer system for players who die frequently can feel patronizing and detracts from the challenge that fans of the original may expect.

The remastered soundtrack by Chris Hülsbeck has received widespread acclaim for its nostalgic charm and modern enhancements, allowing players to switch between the original Amiga, C64, and updated tracks. Fans appreciate the attention to detail and the ability to relive classic tunes while enjoying new remixes, making the music a standout feature of the game. Overall, the music successfully balances nostalgia with fresh interpretations, enhancing the gaming experience.
“The music comes from Chris Hülsbeck, who is considered one of the best-known musicians of the German 16-bit era.”
“The updates to the soundtrack are excellent and the new tracks are a real treat, and it's great to have the Amiga and C64 versions of the tunes as options as well.”
“For the remaster, he has given his old tracks a new twist - but fans of the original will immediately feel musically transported back to the 90s.”
“Just the right decent improvements (a bit more room for your ship in the levels, slightly upgraded pixel art, a completely remastered soundtrack from Chris Hülsbeck himself), without losing its fantastic style and gameplay.”
“I used to love playing this back on the A500 when I was a kid and being able to select that music, hearing it in all its glory playing it the way it was meant to be played. Not saying the new music isn't great because it's bloody fantastic, but just hearing it again takes me right back; they say nostalgia is a hell of a drug, well today I found a new dealer.”

76%X-Out: Resurfaced (Nintendo Switch)
X-Out: Resurfaced is a quality remake of a shoot ’em up originally released for the Commodore 64. The original’s underwater setting and submarine customization options are now supported by improved graphics, UI fixes, and a co-op mode that should help it appeal to more than just those seeking their retro fix.
80%X-Out: Resurfaced Review – Who Said Water Levels Can’t Be Good?
A pretty straightforward remake of an excellent 90s shoot-em-up set in the depths of the ocean. The enhanced visuals of the deep sea stages look vibrant and faithful, though a classic graphic toggle would've been nice. A new mirror mode, some added cheats, and a preconfigured submarine loadout screen are nice additions and all, but the lack of save options or online co-op is a missed opportunity. Still, what's here is solid stuff, especially if you like a well-earned challenge. This is a strong recommendation for fans of the game or shoot-em-up enthusiasts, but the $20 price tag might be too much to swallow for others.
