story
2,043 mentions Positive Neutral NegativeVenba delivers a short but deeply emotional and well-crafted story that poignantly explores the immigrant experience, generational cultural tensions, and family bonds through the unique lens of South Indian cuisine. The narrative is heartfelt and relatable, resonating strongly with immigrant families and those familiar with cultural identity struggles, often evoking tears despite its brief playtime. While some find the pacing abrupt or the story somewhat linear and concise, the beautiful art, music, and integration of cooking as a storytelling device create a powerful, immersive experience that leaves a lasting impact.
“In only 100 minutes of playtime, Venba achieves easily what AAA blockbuster titles can’t in 100 hours – a cast of sympathetic, well-written and fleshed-out characters, an emotionally resonating story, important and well thought-out themes and a fresh and unique perspective on life from a cultural background that we so rarely get to explore in video games.”
“Such a beautiful story told sparsely and powerfully, charming art, the music is so special, and the game design is carefully thought through.”
“Venba is an absolute gem—a tender, beautifully crafted experience that blends storytelling, culture, and cooking into something truly magical.”
“The story is way too jumpy and doesn't really explain anything that goes on in the story outside the bare minimum.”
“Also there was so many minor details that got sprinkled in the story that went nowhere—key examples are Venba's mother's health, the bench incident, the relationship/opinions between Venba and her husband, and that one dude in the first chapter (can't remember his name but I wish there was more in-depth details given on why the father character was so against working for him besides vague details), why the parents wanted to immigrate in the first place besides assumed money/opportunity issues back in India. All these small things feel impersonal to Venba and the characters; like they can be used in any immigrant character story, nothing sticks out that could personally tie these elements to the characters. It's all just vague hand-waving bits of plot that feel like their existence is to showcase the difficulties of immigration. Perhaps that's all the plot was meant to be, a story about immigration, integration, culture shock and a side of cooking with no other deeper story development involved.”
“The story wasn’t very captivating, shallow at times, and I don’t know how the hell some biryani could make a car smell bad.”
