Unmechanical

Unmechanical Extended on a fundamental level fails to address the shortcomings of the original game, and even though the extended episode tries it's best to do something interesting, it's against the clock and the mechanics of the game. Extended isn't worth the asking price for what it offers, especially over the original version.

  • Beautiful, polished graphics with a unique steampunk and mechanical aesthetic that creates an immersive atmosphere.
  • Engaging and varied physics-based puzzles that are generally logical and rewarding, suitable for casual and puzzle fans.
  • Relaxing ambient soundtrack and smooth controls that complement the gameplay experience well.
  • Game length is very short, usually around 2 to 4 hours, with limited replayability.
  • Lack of a strong or clear narrative; the story is minimal, ambiguous, or non-existent, leaving some players unsatisfied.
  • Occasional frustrating puzzles and bugs including physics glitches and some design issues like lacking clear direction or save system.
  • gameplay
    141 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Unmechanical offers simple, intuitive physics-based puzzle gameplay centered on controlling a flying robot with a tractor beam, featuring smooth controls and well-designed levels that encourage exploration and logical thinking. While the puzzles are varied and often clever, the game is short (around 2-5 hours) and sometimes lacks depth or challenge for expert puzzlers, with some critics noting limited mechanics and occasional fiddliness. Overall, it delivers a relaxing and atmospheric experience with charming visuals and sound but feels more like a solid rather than groundbreaking puzzle game.

    • “This puzzle game has very simple mechanics (move up, down, left, right, pull object) but surprisingly emergent gameplay.”
    • “The variety of obstacles is huge and there is very little to no repetition when it comes to solutions and mechanics, even although the physics main theme is somewhat prevalent most of the time.”
    • “The puzzle aspect uses these mechanics very well and to their full force.”
    • “Unmechanical is mechanically sound but unfortunately doesn't often push to do much with its mechanics.”
    • “The puzzles are lacking in numerous places and tend to be a little fiddly due to the game's mechanics.”
    • “My only real issue is that Unmechanical does a very poor job of conveying where and what you need to do next.”
  • graphics
    91 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's graphics are widely praised for their polished, unique, and charming steampunk-inspired art style, with beautiful visuals that create a lush, atmospheric world. Despite being built on an older engine, the graphics remain impressive and immersive, enhancing the gameplay experience without demanding high-end hardware. While some note the lack of advanced graphics settings and HD support, the visuals are frequently cited as a standout feature that significantly adds to the game's appeal.

    • “The graphics are lush, rendering various environments for your robot to wander through while searching for a fallen comrade that include caverns, factories, and occasionally trippy things difficult to describe.”
    • “The graphics, though, are stellar; it's obvious that the game developers spent significant time on the game's looks.”
    • “The first surprise came in the form of the fantastic visuals, which put Unreal Engine 3 to use more effectively than I've seen from some AAA games.”
    • “There's no support beyond HD graphics, which isn't acceptable today, unfortunately.”
    • “The menu system is quite basic and doesn’t cater for higher resolutions than 1080p or advanced graphics settings.”
    • “Now, if they add some settings for graphics, controls and loading a level/savegame … that’d be good.”
  • atmosphere
    50 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game is widely praised for its immersive and unique atmosphere, characterized by beautiful visuals, ambient and atmospheric music, and well-designed environments that create a moody, relaxing, and captivating experience. Many comparisons to games like Machinarium highlight its strong focus on ambiance over intense gameplay, making it especially appealing to players who value aesthetic and emotional immersion in puzzle adventures. While some note its short length and occasional repetitiveness, the atmosphere remains a standout, often described as charming, eerie, and beautifully crafted.

    • “The developers have managed to capture quite an excellent atmosphere throughout the game with a great selection of ambient sounds which at times border on actual music being played.”
    • “It’s a beautiful, atmospheric game where you explore a sculpted technological and organic world.”
    • “This game is highly atmospheric, visually impeccable, and has character oozing from every pore.”
    • “It has a weird atmosphere to boot.”
    • “I'd recommend for the atmosphere alone if it were free, but the puzzles are almost always either nonsensical or tedious.”
    • “Nice little puzzler, I think I remembered that it stumped me a time or two and I had to look up what to do (find a little thing in an obscure place); other than that, I just liked the atmosphere and your little buddy.”
  • story
    49 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The story in the game is minimal, often ambiguous, and left largely to player interpretation, with no explicit dialogue or detailed narrative. While some players appreciate the subtle, atmospheric, and metaphorical storytelling woven through the environment and gameplay, others find the lack of a clear or satisfying plot disappointing. Overall, the story serves more as a backdrop to the puzzle experience rather than a fully developed narrative.

    • “The story is left open to interpretation (just like all good art) and by the time you finish the game, you emerge with a sense of satisfaction at having completed your quest for freedom (or not, if you chose "the other path"). Graphics are beautiful, charming and original (where else will you encounter a giant beating heart with a pacemaker underground?).”
    • “The story is told using gameplay; despite the fact that there is so little of it, it is emotional, meaningful and engaging.”
    • “The main story ends abruptly but a free expansion covers the final part of the adventure, this time trying for a loosely transmitted tale of friendship.”
    • “There's no resolution to what you see in the game, no explanation, nothing resembling a story beat.”
    • “Perhaps the storyline was the only thing that needed some improvement: we don't know who we are or why we are where we are; and the ending was also a letdown because it came too abruptly.”
    • “If the story were any more appreciable, that might have helped to make those few hours a bit more reasonable (similar to Limbo) but nothing really grabbed me there.”
  • music
    40 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The music in the game is widely praised for its relaxing, ambient, and atmospheric qualities that perfectly complement the puzzle-solving and exploration elements. The soundtrack enhances immersion with soothing electronic and ambient tones, creating a chill vibe without overpowering gameplay. While not always standout or memorable, the music consistently supports the game’s charming, unique atmosphere.

    • “The soundtrack is very well put together and tonally appropriate.”
    • “Unmechanical is a casual and extremely relaxing game and the ambient music adds a lot to this, so it's the perfect game to grab a controller, sit back and enjoy some puzzling.”
    • “Great ambient music as well.”
    • “Performance was solid except for one place and the music was atmospheric and forgettable.”
    • “The soundtrack was mostly just ambient music but it did the job for the game itself.”
    • “The developers have managed to capture quite an excellent atmosphere throughout the game with a great selection of ambient sounds which at times border on actual music being played.”
  • grinding
    6 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Grinding in this game involves solving physics-based puzzles that are generally well-designed but occasionally become tedious or convoluted. While the gameplay and controls remain engaging, some players find the puzzle-solving repetitive, which could lead to fatigue if extended over a long playtime.

    • “I'd recommend for the atmosphere alone if it were free, but the puzzles are almost always either nonsensical or tedious.”
    • “Tldr: this is a physics lunar lander adventure in which you pull levers and interact with environment to solve tedious puzzles to progress down a corridor.”
    • “With a game like this, I could maybe see it becoming tedious if it dragged on for 20 hours.”
  • stability
    6 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game suffers from notable stability issues, including bugs and glitches that affect physics and gameplay, leading to frustrating moments like getting stuck while carrying objects. Although some problems can be temporarily resolved by reloading, the overall experience feels unfinished and unstable. However, at least one user reported a bug-free experience.

    • “Tl;dr: buggy and unfinished.”
    • “I have not played such a (design- and programme-) flawed buggy game in a long time.”
    • “Despite its brain-melting puzzles and breath-taking scenery, only 1 hour of gameplay (including DLC, which is full of glitches that somehow slipped through) doesn't make me want to try this game again, even just to unlock all the achievements.”
  • optimization
    4 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Optimization is generally solid on high-end hardware, but Linux performance is notably poor, with reset resolution settings indicating a low-effort port and hindering user experience.

    • “Linux performance could be better, though.”
    • “Worst, if you attempt to change resolution to gain performance, it resets back when you start playing the game; definitely a low/no effort port for Linux.”
    • “Performance was solid except for one place and the music was atmospheric and forgettable.”
  • replayability
    3 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Replayability for this puzzle game is mixed; while achievements add some incentive to replay, overall it lacks lasting replay value despite strong visuals and atmosphere.

    • “I will say that this game completely lacks replayability.”
    • “All in all, a great puzzle game that's lacking slightly in replay value but stands out in visuals and atmosphere.”
    • “Definitely a good quick puzzler and the achievements add some replayability.”
  • emotional
    2 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game delivers a strong emotional impact through its minimalist gameplay, using thoughtful mechanics—like delicately balancing a ball between electrified nails with magnets—to tell a meaningful and engaging story despite limited content.

    • “The story is told using gameplay; despite the fact that there is so little of it, it is emotional, meaningful, and engaging.”
