Titanfall

Titanfall surprised me, and I love it. I am not a huge fan of first person shooters, but this is one FPS that I am going to play a lot of. The gameplay is fast and addictive, and the inclusion of titans is a welcome change to the conventional shooter. The only small downside is that the game is only 6 versus 6, and while the inclusion of bots helps a little, I wish the bot AI was turned up a little.

  • Titanfall 1 offers a unique and engaging multiplayer experience with fast-paced gameplay and innovative mechanics.
  • The game features customizable Titans and a variety of weapons, providing players with a sense of freedom in their playstyle.
  • Despite its age, the graphics and design still hold up well, creating an immersive atmosphere.
  • The game is currently unplayable due to server issues caused by a hacker, making it impossible to connect to matches.
  • There is no single-player campaign, and the multiplayer mode suffers from a very low player base, leading to long wait times for matches.
  • Many players have experienced significant technical issues, including audio problems and crashes, which detract from the overall experience.
  • gameplay
    83 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay of Titanfall 1 is praised for its unique mechanics, including wall-running and titan combat, offering a fun and dynamic experience despite some repetitiveness and a lack of player customization options. However, the game suffers from server issues and a dwindling player base, which significantly impacts the overall experience. While many players find the core gameplay enjoyable, they often recommend Titanfall 2 for a more polished and complete experience.

    • “The whole gameplay is a mix of milsim and big robots; both the titans and the grunts die really quickly if you're not careful.”
    • “It involves some of the most dynamic gameplay mechanics, mixing massive robot death machines (titans) and just as cool pilots.”
    • “Came for the epic moments, stayed for the outstanding gameplay.”
    • “The gameplay became repetitive with only a handful of truly 'meta' weapons frequently dominating matches, little hidey holes that knowledgeable players could exploit to 'pwn' the newer players.”
    • “The campaign missions are just multiplayer games with narration throughout the matches and cutscenes before each match starts; gameplay-wise they’re no different from any other multiplayer match you could play, and there’s no option to play them with bots in singleplayer.”
    • “It's clunky, dead, and the gameplay is lacking.”
  • story
    42 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The story aspect of Titanfall is largely criticized for lacking a traditional single-player campaign, as it is primarily a multiplayer-focused game with narrative elements integrated into matches. Players express disappointment that the campaign consists of multiplayer matches with minimal storytelling, presenting a biased view of the conflict. Many recommend Titanfall 2 for its superior story mode, highlighting that Titanfall 1 offers little in terms of narrative content or solo play options.

    • “The story still keeps up, and even though it's multiplayer only, it combines set pieces directly into the gameplay, completing certain objectives that trigger events and can branch off the story to separate maps and outcomes as you progress.”
    • “While not having a true single-player campaign in place, the multiplayer campaign is still quite a bit of fun to play through as it combines set pieces directly into the multiplayer.”
    • “The emphasis on AI characters, innovative storytelling, 60fps small team fights, and the concept of the Titan was really something to behold in those days.”
    • “The game is literally unplayable because they made a story mode multiplayer only.”
    • “No story mode... only multiplayer!”
    • “If you are about to buy this game for the 'story' there is none, you have to play multiplayer (dead) in order to play the campaign, you can't even start it solo.”
  • graphics
    27 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The graphics of the game receive mixed reviews, with many praising its unique art style and aesthetic that evoke a gritty, immersive atmosphere, particularly for its time. While some players appreciate the visuals and customization options, others criticize them as dull or outdated compared to its sequel, Titanfall 2. Overall, the game is recognized for its solid graphics that hold up well, despite some limitations in polish and detail.

    • “God-tier, never seen before graphics on the source engine, great mechanics & very smooth gameplay.”
    • “10/10, graphics are incredible for the time it came out, and still are good in the present.”
    • “Please, play this game, and give it a chance, because what it lacks in polish or fancy sci-fi tech, it more than makes up for with a gritty, immersive, and aesthetically pleasing design that, while limited by a lack of budget and the rare bug, combines seamlessly with the smarter, not faster, combat system to create a gameplay experience which truly stands the test of time.”
    • “Graphics are too bad.”
    • “The visuals are really dull; enemies look like grey blobs when not up close.”
    • “I think the art suffered as this series went on, as it had its own sci-fi art style, but this game has its own kind of updated military equipment look.”
  • atmosphere
    7 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The atmosphere of Titanfall 1 is characterized by a unique and aesthetically pleasing design, featuring a gritty, dark, and intense ambiance that immerses players in the frontier battles. Reviewers appreciate the game's oppressive and subdued tone, which contrasts with the more chaotic feel of its sequel, Titanfall 2. The attention to detail and the variety of voice lines from grunts enhance the overall experience, making it a more serious and thoughtful gameplay environment.

    • “The attention to detail from the 200 developers back then is amazing; they managed to create an atmosphere where you get immersed into the frontier battles.”
    • “All the maps that aren't in Titanfall 2 are very cool, and I love the overall more dark and gritty atmosphere of the game.”
    • “Combat has a different feel to the sequel and is a bit less chaotic, and the general atmosphere is more oppressive and subdued.”
    • “All the maps that aren't in Titanfall 2 are very cool and I love the overall more dark and gritty atmosphere of the game.”
    • “It has a unique and aesthetically pleasing design, decent backstory, balanced gameplay, and a very gritty, violent, intense, and dark atmosphere.”
  • stability
    6 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's stability has been a mixed experience for users; while initial bugs from its Steam release have been addressed, players still encounter significant issues such as file errors and lag during online play. Despite some improvements, ongoing optimization problems and a limited player base contribute to a frustrating experience for many.

    • “I'm constantly getting warnings that it can't find this or that file. I'm fed up wasting my time trying to run through every single troubleshooting method. I've reinstalled 4 times now!”
    • “Buggy mess.”
    • “While no one was expecting this to show up on Steam, I don't think anyone was also expecting it to be so buggy and unoptimized for PC.”
  • monetization
    5 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The monetization strategy of the game has drawn significant criticism, with players feeling that it prioritizes battle passes and microtransactions over genuine community engagement and game quality. Many view the incorporation of Titanfall references as mere nostalgia-driven cash grabs, leading to disappointment among long-time fans who feel the game has strayed from its original appeal. Overall, there is a strong sentiment that the game's monetization practices have undermined its legacy and community trust.

    • “It died due to EA and Respawn's inability to care about anything without a battle pass and microtransactions, aided by a single hacker.”
    • “The Titanfall 'references' in Apex are simply cash grabs and nostalgia bait.”
    • “Very unfortunate to see one of my all-time favorite games, and one that made me want to get a console back when it was released, be a disgraced cash grab like this.”
  • optimization
    4 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's optimization has seen significant improvements, with most performance issues resolved, allowing for smooth mech gameplay. However, some users still report lingering bugs, particularly with audio glitches, which can detract from the overall experience.

    • “It is one of the first games using mechs that actually run smoothly.”
    • “Performance problems have been fixed for the most part.”
    • “While no one was expecting this to show up on Steam, I don't think anyone was also expecting it to be so buggy and unoptimized for PC.”
    • “The game still works and runs fine, but there are performance bugs like the audio constantly fizzling, which forces me to turn the audio all the way down for the application.”
  • humor
    3 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The humor in the game is highlighted through the irony of its large audio file size and the reviewer’s self-deprecating admission of purchasing a poorly rated game for comedic reasons. Overall, while the game has its flaws, it still manages to provide a fun experience.

    • “40GB of uncompressed audio is one funny issue, but the game was definitely playable and fun before delisting.”
    • “Funny that I still bought this useless game even seeing it with a very negative rating.”
    • “(My original review from launch day 11/20/20 for funny sakes)”
  • replayability
    3 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game lacks a single-player mode, which limits its replayability for those who prefer solo play, making it primarily a multiplayer experience.

    • “This game has taught me to check whether games are playable solo or not before buying, and apparently this one does not have a single-player mode and is only playable in multiplayer.”
    • “The lack of variety in gameplay makes it hard to find reasons to replay the game after finishing it once.”
    • “Once you complete the main story, there’s little incentive to dive back in, as the side quests feel repetitive and uninspired.”
  • grinding
    2 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Players note that grinding in the attrition game mode is prevalent, leading to a lack of engagement with the campaign and other modes. Despite this, many report being able to find matches easily, even during late hours while farming.

    • “All those players are grinding in attrition game mode, which means nobody's playing the campaign or any other game modes.”
    • “I was able to consistently find games even when I was playing at 4 AM farming.”
  • emotional
    2 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Players highlight the game's wholesome community, which fosters a supportive environment regardless of individual play styles. While there are concerns about pricing and server issues, the emotional connection and enjoyment derived from the gameplay experience are emphasized as key positives.

    • “The community is very wholesome and doesn't care what you use as long as you're having fun.”
    • “The game needs to be cheaper or the servers need to be fixed, but when you get into a game, the community is very wholesome and the gameplay is slower but more fun.”
  • music
    2 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The music in the game features a dynamic and gritty military soundtrack that enhances the overall experience, particularly during the multiplayer menu and the intro cutscene. Players appreciate the high energy and customization options that complement the titans, making the audio experience engaging and impactful.

    • “The dynamic soundtrack kicks ass and offers significantly more customizable titans.”
    • “The gritty military soundtrack is superb, especially in the multiplayer menu and the intro cutscene at the start of the match.”
