The story of *Superhot* has received mixed reviews, with many players finding it short and somewhat unengaging, typically lasting around 2-3 hours. While some appreciate its unique, meta-narrative style that intertwines with gameplay, others criticize it for being intrusive and lacking depth. Despite the brevity of the main story, players often highlight the game's replayability through various challenge modes and endless gameplay, suggesting that the focus should be more on the innovative mechanics rather than the story itself.
“The narrative is cleverly woven into the gameplay, creating an intriguing meta-story that blurs the lines between the game and reality.”
“The story is short but still offers hours of playtime.”
“The story is a well-made one which is refreshing.”
“I honestly found the story kind of dull and lazy, and was basically just trudging along until I could be rid of it and have free play, but I still absolutely think it's a worthwhile game when it's on sale.”
“The story is a huge waste of time, that distracts from what everyone bought this game to do.”
“The story mode is very short, only about 2 hours, but the game is cheap and a great experience.”

The gameplay of Superhot is widely praised for its innovative mechanics, particularly the unique concept where time only moves when the player moves, creating a blend of first-person shooter and puzzle elements. While many players find the core gameplay engaging and satisfying, some express disappointment over the game's short campaign length, typically around 2-3 hours, and the repetitive nature of the challenges. Overall, the game is recommended for its fun mechanics and replayability, especially in endless and challenge modes, but potential buyers are advised to consider the price relative to the content offered.
“Superhot is a truly unique and innovative approach towards the fps genre, and it is the simplistic graphics, smooth gameplay and matrix vibe that make it stand out above many.”
“The gameplay is fantastic and lends itself well to near infinite replayability.”
“The core gameplay is amazing, and is modified by several challenges.”
“The gameplay is incredibly clunky, but in an attempt to make the slow-motion cooler, they give you a replay of your run at full speed.”
“The gameplay is very unique and you feel like a badass when you watch the replays at the end of each level.”
“The gameplay is short, repetitive, and there is simply not enough content here to merit the $25 price.”

The graphics of "Superhot" are characterized by a striking minimalist aesthetic that effectively enhances gameplay, utilizing a limited color palette of red, white, and black. While some players appreciate the simplicity and clarity of the visuals, which help focus on the unique time-manipulation mechanics, others feel that the graphics lack depth and detail, leading to mixed opinions on their overall appeal. Overall, the art style is seen as functional and stylish, contributing to the game's innovative experience rather than detracting from it.
“This game deserves all the awards it got because this is just jaw-dropping. The entire game features not eye-bleeding graphics, fun gameplay, and the main mechanic of the game—only moving if you do—is just so genius.”
“The minimalist art style is both striking and functional, enhancing the focus on gameplay and making enemy detection easy.”
“The graphics are sleek, minimalistic, and heavily stylized, which helps to make important elements pop out, such as enemies, bullets, and weapons.”
“The art style still gets in the way of the game.”
“Sure, the gameplay is cool and reminds me of Neo from The Matrix, but it gets old quickly, and the rest of the experience (story, visuals, and audio) is mediocre.”
“The sound design is grating on the ears, and the visuals are like a seizure test in between levels.”

The game's replayability is a mixed bag, with many players noting that while the main campaign is short (around 1.5 to 3 hours), it offers significant replay value through various modes such as endless and challenge modes. These additional features encourage players to experiment with different strategies and approaches, enhancing the overall experience. However, some reviewers feel that the replayability can diminish over time due to repetitive gameplay and a lack of diverse content.
“Endless mode, speed-run mode, and challenge modes allow high replayability and the honing of skills.”
“The main campaign is only 2 hours maximum, but there are plenty of challenges to complete after that, so it's quite replayable.”
“The replayability factor is infinite and even if you do get bored of replaying the story there are tonnes of additional game modes that get unlocked once you beat the game and subsequently more features unlock as you play these.”
“After you finish the story, in my opinion, the game isn't really replayable and the rest of the modes are not worth playing.”
“The main issue is that it took me about 90 minutes to beat the whole story and yes, there is replayability, but it just feels pointless.”
“The game is extremely short, beatable in well under an hour if you're half decent, and the secondary modes, endless and challenges, offer little to no excitement and replayability.”

Instead, the game relies on sound effects like gunshots and shattering glass, which some players appreciate for enhancing focus and immersion, while others find it monotonous and lacking excitement. The only music present is a credits theme, which has received mixed reactions, leading many to suggest playing their own music to enhance the experience.
“The soundtrack of Superhot is a perfect complement to its gameplay.”
“Music from your playlist combined with the way this game handles makes you feel like a complete badass.”
“The best way to play Superhot is to run Spotify and play your favorite music!”
“Superhot doesn't really have anything worthwhile in terms of story or soundtrack, or maybe even visuals.”
“There's basically no music except for a credits theme (which I like!) but it makes up for that with exactly one sound effect.”
“The lack of a soundtrack is a stylistic choice, but not one I agree with.”

Overall, the consensus suggests that the grinding aspect can be frustrating and may require a considerable investment of time, often overshadowing the game's more enjoyable elements.
“You'll need a second life for grinding.”
“I only started playing this title in 2022 and quickly found it has so much replay value; there's no grinding involved, no stupid, pointless side missions; just pure FPS fun... and matrix-style gameplay.”
“A few weeks or more of grinding.”
“Some of the most tedious nonsense that completely blocks all progress unless you indulge them.”
“While that does initially seem like a lot of content, at least 10 of those hours will be spent doing nothing but grinding.”
“It's a slog, a tedious grind, too much unimpactful filler content.”

The humor in the game is a mixed bag, with some players finding it genuinely funny and entertaining, particularly in the context of its unique gameplay mechanics and absurd scenarios. However, others criticize the humor as pretentious or annoying, especially in relation to the story, which many deem mediocre. Overall, while there are moments of hilarity and cleverness, the humor may not resonate with everyone, leading to a polarized reception.
“Mind-bending gameplay: time only moves when you do, making for some truly epic (and hilarious) bullet ballets.”
“The funny part is it would have been a great game if it had no story and just 'shoot red guys,' but the game literally mocks you for thinking that.”
“Great mechanics, expansive replayability and modes, very funny humor and good fun to watch replays in real-time to see what a badass you are.”
“102 minutes to complete the story... probably even less because I took my time and didn't rush it. There's always an endless mode to virtually enhance the lifetime of the game, but it's not funny long enough.”

“It's a fun game; it's not buggy or broken, it works.”
“Excellent puzzle game, but I purchased and downloaded the game expecting a fun revisit of an old favorite and instead got an hour of doomed-to-fail controller setup and troubleshooting.”
“The fact that it was partly quite frustrating, didn't have a very compelling plot and featured a bunch of glitches prevents me from giving it a very high rating.”
“Very buggy, is always crashing even though I have twice the recommended processing power.”

Overall, the game's performance can vary widely depending on the system, leading to a divided opinion on its optimization quality.
“The visual style not only contributes to the game's unique identity but also allows for smooth performance, even on lower-spec hardware.”
“The game is very well optimized and the premise alone, combined with the level design and difficulty curve, make this a very fun, albeit short experience.”
“I've had no performance issues with it on my Alienware Alpha R1 on the highest graphics settings at 1080p, and the game looks great despite its minimalistic design.”
“The main concept is genius, but the game is obnoxious and very poorly optimized (it's actually impressive how bad it is given the minimalistic style).”
“This game is just poorly optimized and since this game is over a year old, I would think patches and a fix would be available by now but apparently not.”
“Huge performance problems, constantly drops below 60 sometimes to 15-20fps.”

“There's a surprisingly unsettling atmosphere to this game, from the story to the droning soundtrack in levels and the colorless (and sometimes untextured) environments.”
“I think if they had leaned harder into the absurdity of the setting and been a lot more self-aware, the atmosphere of the game would be a little less cringe-worthy.”
“Fun, for a while at least, in story mode the commands and chat-room passages create more of an annoying atmosphere, not a tense one.”

The monetization strategy of the game has been criticized for its intrusive ad launcher that appears every time the game is opened, leading to a frustrating user experience. Many players feel that the game prioritizes profit over quality, describing it as a "shameless cash grab" designed to go viral rather than provide genuine entertainment. Overall, the monetization approach detracts from the gameplay, making it feel repetitive and overly commercialized.
“The bad thing is the game has a launcher just for ads; some of the hitboxes are terrible, and the repetitiveness of the challenges.”
“The launcher is basically a constant advertisement every time you open the game.”
“The only reason this game was made was to force it to go viral and make a ton of easy money by telling players to advertise it to their friends with the phrase, 'it's the most innovative shooter I've played in years!' Shameless cash grab.”

Critic Reviews
SUPERHOT VR Review
Superhot VR was a noble attempt, though misguided. There are way too many quality issues going on here, what with the game doing things it isn't supposed to (upon the first time booting up, no less), busted up and weird 3D models, and way too demanding requirements just to get it to play the way the designers intended. Most of the game's issues could be solved if it wasn't designed as a standing VR game, but rather as a standard controlled game that was closer to the original than try to reinvent itself. The brilliant moments are just not frequent enough to overlook the avalanche of issues that overwhelm the entire experience.
30%SUPERHOT VR Review
Superhot on its own was already a rich, memorable title that presented something different to the genre. This VR expansion takes that up a notch or ten. It really is like stepping inside an action movie. The level of immersion is second to none, but more important is the level of fun, which throws as many dangerous scenarios and enemies as it can and asks, "How will you stop us?" It is hard not to rise to the challenge—and don't be surprised if a lot of the office furniture is crashing down as those bullets are dodged and intercepted. This is a virtual power fantasy in all the best ways.
90%SUPERHOT VR Review
Superhot VR is a license to perform inside of a bullet ballet without any of the implicit horror of gun violence. Its hook—time only moves when you do—makes room for strategy and action in equal measure, and its stationary operation neatly accommodates and conceals the limitations of virtual reality. All that's left is to imagine is the caliber of Superhot VR's performance outside of Sony's finicky hardware.
