About

Simon the Sorcerer: 25th Anniversary Edition is a single player puzzle game with fantasy and comedy themes. It was developed by Adventure Soft and was released on April 3, 2018. It received mostly positive reviews from players.

There are some things that kids just shouldn't have to put up with. Being transported to some weird dimension full of goblins, dwarves, swamplings, stupid wizards and sleeping giants is definitely one of them. After escaping a "welcoming party", Simon discovers that he has been brought on a quest to rescue the wizard Calypso from the evil sorcerer Sordid.

  • Classic point-and-click adventure with timeless British humor and witty dialogue.
  • Original pixel art graphics and animations are well done and visually appealing; option to revert to original graphics provided.
  • Soundtrack and voice acting, especially Chris Barrie's performance as Simon, are memorable and add to the immersive fantasy experience.
  • The 25th Anniversary Edition suffers from numerous bugs and crashes, including save/load failures and frequent game freeze issues.
  • The so-called 'remaster' is mostly a simple graphics filter over the original, resulting in a poor visual upgrade that many find worse than the original pixel art.
  • UI and controls feel clunky and outdated, with unintuitive cursor changes and problematic action selection, detracting from the gameplay experience.
  • graphics
    44 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The original pixel art graphics are widely praised for their classic, charming style and fit the game's humor and fantasy setting well, while the so-called "remastered" or "high-end" graphics—essentially a smoothing filter—are heavily criticized for looking blurry, distorted, and inferior to the originals. Most users strongly recommend playing with the original graphics option for the authentic and visually pleasing experience, as the "enhanced" version detracts from the game's aesthetic and introduces mismatched UI elements.

    • “A classic point-and-click adventure that features gorgeous art style, offbeat 4th wall-breaking humor, somewhat unconventional puzzles, and truly arduous pixel hunting.”
    • “I think aesthetically this game is, overall, excellent, capturing the fantasy setting really well despite being more of a satire of fantasy.”
    • “Mojotouch did a great job and brought us the game back after many years with many innovations and graphics enhancements and many other good things.”
    • “The remastered edition is an absolute disaster, with soapy graphics that are inferior to the original pixelated style, and many bugs the developer won't fix.”
    • “The new graphics look terrible, as if they just slapped a cheap filter on the original graphics without repainting anything.”
    • “The 25th anniversary edition tried smoothing the game graphically which looks awful; the original graphics option is preferable.”
  • humor
    25 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The humor in this point-and-click adventure is characterized by a distinctly British, offbeat, and often fourth wall-breaking style, delivering clever, tongue-in-cheek jokes and witty references to classic fairy tales and popular fantasy series. While many players find it genuinely funny and charming with naturalistic voiceovers and memorable one-liners, some feel the humor is less sharp or occasionally lame compared to other classics like Monkey Island or Day of the Tentacle. Overall, the game is praised for being one of the funniest in its genre, blending humor with challenging puzzles and lovable characters.

    • “A classic point and click with a very British sense of humor.”
    • “It's all really funny stuff, this is certainly one of the funniest point and click adventures I've played yet.”
    • “It does have a lot of tongue-in-cheek humor and makes references to several classic fairy tales as well as popular well known book series such as Discworld and The Lord of the Rings.”
  • music
    22 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The music in the game is widely praised for its catchy, well-produced soundtrack and immersive quality, often considered on par with classic LucasArts titles. Multiple soundtrack options, including remastered and original versions with MT-32 support, are appreciated, though some users wish for better control over background noise volume. A few critique the quality of the trailer music and note differences in sound quality between versions, but overall the music significantly enhances the game's quirky, nostalgic atmosphere.

    • “Beautiful background art, pretty good spritework, really catchy soundtrack.”
    • “The most attractive option is being able to choose between different music kinds, like the excellent remaster, excellent original, or excellent MT-32.”
    • “Besides graphics, you also have the ability to enjoy the soundtrack of the game with the built-in Roland MT-32 sound module; one of the most expensive sound hardware modules used in PC gaming back in the day.”
    • “My only complaint here is that it allows you to adjust the music and voice volume separately but not the background noises.”
    • “I really wish I had an option to turn down those background noises just like I did for the background music.”
    • “The new main menu is not only useless and redundant but also stupendously ugly, clunky and dysfunctional; you can't make a single adjustment to the game settings without reloading a saved game or starting a new one. This feature is especially frustrating when trying to adjust the (initially incredibly loud) background music volume, requiring clicks on like seven different buttons with every adjustment.”
  • stability
    7 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game suffers from frequent glitches and crashes, particularly related to saving, cursors, and menus, causing frustration for some players. However, the developers have been responsive in addressing these issues post-release. Despite stability problems, many users still appreciate the game’s humor and classic graphics.

    • “I also had quite a few glitches in this version, especially with save files not being read.”
    • “On my system the game black-screens and freezes whenever I try to save.”
    • “The cursor and menus are buggy as hell, everything is flickering and the game crashed twice on me while some dialogue tried to load, making me lose all progress.”
  • story
    7 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The story is generally regarded as decent, engaging, and well-crafted, comparable to other adventure games of its time. Despite some UI frustrations, players find the narrative immersive, entertaining, and enjoyable.

    • “I didn't mind the wee upgrades as I just wanted to see the story again.”
    • “The story is decent, fairly well thought out and about as complex as most adventure games of that era.”
    • “The story and writing are just fun and entertaining.”
    • “No story.”
  • gameplay
    4 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay is basic and unremarkable, with some users experiencing significant bugs like save data corruption early on. It's recommended to review gameplay footage before deciding to play.

    • “Not even 10 minutes into gameplay and I encountered a bug that corrupted my save data, forcing me to restart.”
    • “All in all, look at the screenshots or some gameplay somewhere and decide then if you can.”
    • “It's just gameplay.”
  • grinding
    2 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Users find the grinding aspect in the game minimal and not overly tedious, contrasting it with typical 90s adventure games which are often short but lack repetitive grinding. Overall, grinding is not seen as a significant or frustrating part of the experience.

    • “You'll need a second life for grinding.”
  • monetization
    2 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Users feel that while the monetization isn't an aggressive cash grab, there is a noticeable lack of effort to improve the game or make it fully playable.

  • emotional
    2 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The emotional aspect of the game resonates deeply with players, evoking a mix of nostalgia, empathy, and heartfelt connection—particularly through its charming characters and unique storytelling. Despite some sarcastic undertones in reviews, the experience remains touching and memorable.

    • “The Swampling will forever remain a dear memory to me. Playing it without any voice acting, just text-only as a kid, I cried for that poor, cute little guy, even though I also understood the joke surrounding his situation.”
    • “Thank you Mojotouch for this unique, touching reliving of the past which is not at all infuriating.”
  • replayability
    2 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Users find the game's replayability enhanced by its whimsical, unreplayable cinematic moments, making each playthrough unique. However, the remaster is recommended mainly for those interested in the classic experience rather than as a purely improved version.

  • atmosphere
    1 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The atmosphere in Fate of Atlantis is praised for being dense and eerie, effectively creating an immersive and suspenseful experience.

    • “Fate of Atlantis is also nice for the dense, eerie atmosphere.”
