  • The interface can be clunky and cumbersome, making it frustrating to navigate and use items effectively.

  • The game includes a time limit mechanic that can lead to sudden deaths, which may deter players who prefer a more relaxed gaming experience.
  • music
    353 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The music in the game has received mixed reviews, with many praising the atmospheric orchestral score and the nostalgic option to switch to the original NES soundtrack. While some players find the new music captivating and fitting for the game's mood, others criticize it for being repetitive or straying too far from the original compositions. Overall, the ability to toggle between the remixed and classic tracks is a highlight, allowing fans to enjoy both the updated and nostalgic elements of the game's audio experience.

    • “The art is wonderful, the music is fantastic, the puzzles aren't too tough (at least on the 'normal' difficulty setting), and overall it's a short and very sweet adventuring experience.”
    • “The music is atmospheric and adaptive, laced with familiar nostalgic themes from the classic.”
    • “The soundtrack is a blast!”
    • “The new soundtrack is just unlistenable crap, and stretches way too far from the original, not being recognizable.”
    • “The music is appropriate, but seriously repetitive and a tad annoying at times.”
    • “The remixed music fades into the background and takes a less prominent role than it did on the NES.”
  • graphics
    342 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The graphics of the game have received mixed reviews, with many praising the hand-painted artwork and atmospheric visuals that enhance the overall experience. However, some players criticize the retro graphics mode for being poorly executed, resulting in pixelation that detracts from the game's aesthetic. Overall, while the updated visuals are generally seen as a significant improvement over the original, opinions vary on their execution and effectiveness in capturing the game's intended atmosphere.

    • “Visually, the game looks great, with a consistent aesthetic.”
    • “The artwork is amazing and adds so much to the story.”
    • “The graphics are well painted and beautifully animated, the notes, sounds and cutscenes almost suck you into that living castle!”
    • “While the artwork itself, while mediocre, might be considered passable, the visual presentation here is negligible; it might as well be a slideshow or a YouTube video.”
    • “If you choose the classic visuals, instead of getting something like the NES version or the old computer versions, it just drastically lowers the image's resolution; it looks like the background of a bad VGA point-and-click adventure, and while an homage, it's not one to anything that Shadowgate's ever been.”
    • “Don't even bother with 'classic' graphics mode either, as it simply makes everything super grainy.”
  • story
    216 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The story of the game has received mixed reviews, with some praising its expansion and depth compared to the original, while others find it generic and lacking coherence. Many players appreciate the engaging narration, beautiful visuals, and the nostalgic elements that enhance the overall experience, though some criticize the pacing and complexity of the plot. Overall, it is seen as a solid adventure with a decent storyline that appeals to fans of the genre, despite some feeling it could have been more innovative.

    • “The story, music, art, and dialogue are nothing I've ever seen in a game!”
    • “It expands on the story with amazing narration and gorgeous visuals.”
    • “The atmosphere, enhanced graphics, well-told story, remixed music, different difficulty modes, and varied puzzles and paths make this one outshine the original version even.”
    • “The audio is a bit repetitive and the story - 4 hours in - isn't super coherent.”
    • “The art and voice acting is neat, but the story seems very barebones and typical 'one hero destined to vanquish evil sent into some corrupted dungeon'.”
    • “The improved presentation is a welcome addition, but the unevolved gameplay and story will tend to feel outdated.”
  • gameplay
    109 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay of Shadowgate is a blend of classic point-and-click mechanics with modern enhancements, featuring trial-and-error puzzles and a unique torch timer that adds tension but can frustrate players. While the remake retains the essence of the original, it introduces new content and quality-of-life improvements, though some users find the gameplay clunky and outdated compared to contemporary titles. Overall, it appeals to fans of the genre, particularly those who appreciate its nostalgic elements and challenging puzzles, but may not resonate with newcomers seeking more intuitive gameplay.

    • “I love point & click games, but Shadowgate remake stands out not just for giving a modern graphical and gameplay rebirth to a legendary classic of its time, but to bring with it its strongest points and spreading out from it while preserving the core essentials.”
    • “Shadowgate is a gorgeous remake of a timeless classic, expanding on one of the genre’s most beloved titles with refined mechanics and a wealth of new content that’s sure to keep you glued to your PC for weeks deciphering the castle’s cryptic secrets.”
    • “There are certain achievements tied to specific actions and sub-routes you take throughout the castle; exploration is key and trial and error a must. It almost feels like a low-key sub-quest system as you play a streamlined adventure adding to the replayability.”
    • “For the PC, however, this game and its gameplay mechanics feel like a step backwards in time.”
    • “I thought this was a classic dungeon crawling, puzzle solving experience, sort of like an offshoot of the early fighting fantasy books, but in reality, it's just a frustration fest full of zero-logic puzzles, tons of dead ends, and gameplay that can only be appreciated by someone who used to love the original.”
    • “The biggest flaw in the gameplay is some UI-related clumsiness, as using items on the environment can get very clunky very quickly when you're experimenting on a puzzle.”
  • atmosphere
    66 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The atmosphere of the game is widely praised for its immersive dark fantasy elements, enhanced by beautiful hand-painted graphics, atmospheric music, and a well-crafted story that pays homage to the original. Players appreciate the eerie and foreboding ambiance, which effectively complements the challenging puzzles, although some note that the controls could be improved. Overall, the game successfully captures the spirit of its predecessor while offering a rich, nostalgic experience that feels both familiar and fresh.

    • “The game does what it sets out to do well: create an immersive puzzle-solving atmosphere set in a fantasy world that pays homage to the original game.”
    • “Not many games can match the atmosphere and ambiance of this gem.”
    • “A fantastic remake that stays true to the tone that made the original a classic while adding more depth to the storyline, and creating a more immersive atmosphere!”
    • “One thing my nostalgia wants to nitpick is that the atmosphere doesn't quite feel the same as the NES version, but I think that just might be difficult to recapture.”
    • “This also accounts for some of the difference in atmosphere between this and the original: the original seemed very much like it took place in its own world - the descriptions of lands beyond the castle itself created a great sense of the bigger picture.”
    • “Just the game to spend dull autumn evenings in almost pen-and-paper atmosphere.”
  • replayability
    46 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game offers high replayability through multiple difficulty settings that alter puzzles and unlock different areas, encouraging exploration and trial-and-error gameplay. Achievements tied to specific actions and routes further enhance replay value, while hidden timer mechanics add tension and urgency. However, some players note that once familiar with puzzles, the replay value may diminish, though the overall design promotes multiple playthroughs for completionists.

    • “The three difficulty settings and many achievements add a great degree of replayability to this game.”
    • “Ultimately, I enjoyed Shadowgate and the addition of difficulty levels (with differing puzzles and win conditions) and achievements for time and turn limits mean that there's decent replayability here.”
    • “An enjoyable point-and-click adventure with some replayability due to secret side-stories that are not needed to complete the game on the first run and the increasing difficulties.”
    • “However, if you restart, you know the puzzle ahead of you, so the replay value of this game is quite limited.”
    • “End battle was a bit weak but plenty of replayability.”
    • “This gives the game surprising replayability where you'd least expect it from a game like this.”
  • humor
    28 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The humor in the game is characterized by a wicked, dry wit and snarky commentary that often contrasts with its dark fantasy setting, creating a unique and sometimes jarring experience. While the writing includes many classic and hilarious moments, some players feel that the balance of humor is off, leading to drawn-out cutscenes. Overall, the game successfully incorporates humorous callbacks to the original, making even frustrating moments enjoyable, particularly through its playful take on death and failure.

    • “Great graphics, new locations and puzzles, all combined with the trademark dark humor of the creators make for an awesome return to the castle.”
    • “The writing is high quality and pretty hilarious at times.”
    • “How you proceed in the remake has changed greatly from the original, and what were solutions to problems in the original now kill you in somewhat humorous ways and even offer secret death endings which I greatly enjoyed.”
  • grinding
    19 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Players consistently describe the grinding aspect of the game as tedious and frustrating, often requiring excessive trial and error to solve puzzles. Many reviewers express disappointment, noting that the experience can become boring and unintuitive, detracting from the overall enjoyment. Despite some nostalgic value, the grinding elements are seen as a significant drawback.

    • “You'll need a second life for grinding.”
    • “The best word to describe this game is 'tedious.' I got it on sale for like $5 and I still wouldn't recommend it.”
    • “I wanted to like this game, but it was surprisingly more tedious and unintuitive than I would have ever expected.”
    • “Gave it a go, after a while it just got too tedious and boring.”
  • monetization
    10 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Shadowgate is priced at $15, which some players consider steep given the availability of older AAA games for the same amount. While the game features impressive graphics and high replayability without microtransactions or major bugs, it is criticized for including an advertisement for a sequel that detracts from the ending experience. Overall, it is viewed as a well-crafted remake rather than a mere cash grab, despite the pricing concerns.

    • “Awesome graphics, high replayability, no microtransactions, no game-breaking bugs.”
    • “Shadowgate has the greedy, cash grab price of $15 USD, for which you could easily get any number of older AAA games.”
    • “The ending is severely hampered by an advertisement for a sequel.”
    • “You die somehow and you defeat the dread warlock lord and live unhappily ever after (due to the presence of an advertisement for a sequel).”

    • “The puzzles and music are classic enough to bring every bit of emotional response you want in nostalgia and so much updating and redesign that it feels current and new again.”
