SD GUNDAM G GENERATION CROSS RAYS

There is very little to complain about with SD Gundam G Generation Cross Rays because what it does, it does very well indeed, with no other game on the system to compare it against, other than its previous non-English entry. What we have here is months of content spread across an accessible, user-friendly package that will reward players who like to tinker with squad micro-management but will also let newcomers to the series enjoy the pyrotechnics display from each engagement. We doubt that we need to tell fans of the franchise why this is such a worthy investment; the amount of fan-service (we're talking the good, wholesome variety here) is staggering and more than worth the admission price. To those who love strategy RPGs and have already exhausted all possibilities provided by Fire Emblem: Three Houses and rabid Pokémon trainers who have filled their Pokédex, we offer this advice: Cross Rays might just be the best game of this type on Switch that you've never heard of, and would probably pass you right by if you’re not a Gundam fan. Take a chance on this and you might just become one. It's a fitting 40th-anniversary celebration of the entire saga.

  • Great for Gundam fans with a vast selection of mobile suits and characters from various series.
  • Engaging turn-based strategy gameplay with enjoyable customization options for units and pilots.
  • Beautiful animations and music that enhance the overall experience.
  • Frequent crashes and performance issues, especially on certain hardware configurations.
  • Long mission durations can lead to repetitive gameplay and fatigue.
  • Lack of a comprehensive tutorial and clunky UI can make it difficult for newcomers to understand the mechanics.
  • story
    1,645 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The story in "SD Gundam G Generation Cross Rays" primarily retells the narratives of four main Gundam series: Wing, Seed, 00, and Iron-Blooded Orphans, along with various side stories. While the game captures key plot points and character arcs, it often condenses and simplifies the original material, which may leave newcomers confused and seasoned fans wanting more depth. The missions can be lengthy and repetitive, but they provide a nostalgic experience for fans, with the added feature of dispatch missions allowing for character and unit progression outside of the main story.

    • “I was surprised as to how deep and involved the storylines are; it doesn't feel like a synopsis when you're playing through the stories.”
    • “The gundam elements are very well done, and the storyline closely follows the actual gundam series.”
    • “The story mode provides a summarised version of the series that are included in the game, allowing the experiencing of the epic moments of the 4 series.”
    • “The story is near incomprehensible to people who aren't familiar with Gundam.”
    • “Story is just the story of the old animes, just with tons cut out and, unpopular opinion, Gundam storytelling isn't that good so when you actually cut out huge parts of the story to compress it you're just left with a lot of the stupid parts shining through.”
    • “The only downsides as it is for me is that the 'story mode' is just a literal copy of each series episodes of their respective show.”
  • gameplay
    553 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay of "SD Gundam G Generation Cross Rays" is a turn-based strategy experience that combines familiar mechanics from previous titles with new features like raid groups and customizable units. While many players appreciate the engaging strategy and extensive roster of mobile suits, the gameplay can become repetitive and lengthy due to the high number of enemies and mission durations. Additionally, the lack of clear tutorials and explanations for mechanics can make it challenging for newcomers, though fans of the Gundam franchise and tactical RPGs may find it enjoyable despite its grindy nature.

    • “The enjoyable strategy and leveling make it so engaging, and the simple gameplay keeps it from ever getting boring.”
    • “Its impressive roster of mobile suits, captivating storytelling, and engaging gameplay make it a must-play for both Gundam fans and strategy game enthusiasts alike.”
    • “The gameplay loop is wonderful, and it's super-fun evolving your existing mobile suits into new and wild designs.”
    • “The game really doesn't explain its mechanics well, and there's no dedicated tutorial; it just thrusts you in the deep end.”
    • “Gameplay is boring and easy, with teams being able to recover HP just by staying together, and an AI so inactive that it will literally do nothing unless you move towards it half the time.”
    • “The combat is incredibly repetitive and tedious; the energy system does little to improve gameplay, and the stages are unbearably long.”
  • graphics
    358 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The graphics in the game have received a generally positive reception, with many players praising the high-resolution visuals, stunning battle animations, and overall aesthetic appeal, particularly for fans of the Gundam franchise. However, some users have reported issues with crashes on integrated graphics cards and noted that certain aspects, like tactical graphics and UI design, could use improvement. Overall, while the game showcases impressive graphical fidelity, it may require a dedicated graphics card for optimal performance.

    • “The visuals and presentation are phenomenal in battle at least.”
    • “The graphics are top notch and its pre-rendered cut scenes graphics are so good that I do not mind it playing over and over again.”
    • “The graphics are gorgeous, and there are a ton of different units to acquire, from Tekkadan mobile workers to Destiny Gundam, even massive MS/MA units like the Destroy Gundam.”
    • “As expected, graphics/voice dubbing/gameplay has not changed much from its predecessors.”
    • “The graphics, wouldn't be bad, but the design and the UI reminds me of the SNES era.”
    • “There isn't so much a story mode as a couple of chapters of several different incarnations of Gundam, the graphics outside of cutscenes look RPG Maker level bad, and the lack of direction leads to solidified characters coming off as one-sided or boring.”
  • music
    245 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The music in the game has received widespread praise for its quality and nostalgic value, featuring a mix of original soundtracks and remixed tracks from various Gundam series. Players appreciate the ability to customize their background music, allowing them to incorporate personal favorites and enhance their gaming experience. However, some have noted that certain tracks can become repetitive over time, and the absence of licensed theme songs from the series is a minor drawback. Overall, the soundtrack significantly contributes to the game's engaging atmosphere and appeal to fans.

    • “I'm a big fan of music and this is something I was quite surprised by in Cross Rays.”
    • “The music is fantastic, as is typical of anime music.”
    • “The ability to manage and customize the background music through all aspects of the game (menus, stages, even down to characters) is awesome.”
    • “My only considerable complaint is that the music for attacks is repetitive sometimes.”
    • “It doesn't really happen to me that the music of a game irritates me, but I had to mute it here after like 10 minutes.”
    • “The music selection is also good but sadly does not include the actual theme songs of the series and I do wish all the text scenes are fully voiced after all these years.”
  • grinding
    224 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game is widely regarded as grindy, with many players noting that significant time is required to level up units, earn money, and unlock new mobile suits. While some appreciate the inclusion of a dispatch/idle mode that allows for grinding without active play, others find the repetitive nature of missions and the overall grind tedious and detracting from the enjoyment. Overall, the experience can be rewarding for dedicated fans of the Gundam franchise, but may be off-putting for those who dislike grinding in games.

    • “The combat is incredibly repetitive and tedious, the energy system does little to improve gameplay and the stages are unbearably long.”
    • “You spend 90% of your time grinding for money and for new gundams.”
    • “After that the grinding becomes very tedious and repetitive.”
  • optimization
    51 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's optimization has received mixed reviews, with many players experiencing significant performance issues, including crashes, stuttering, and lag during animations, particularly on lower-spec systems. While some users report smooth gameplay after adjustments, such as configuring NVIDIA settings, the overall consensus indicates that the game is poorly optimized, especially at launch, and still requires further improvements to enhance the user experience. Despite these challenges, fans of the franchise may find value in the game, albeit with caution regarding its technical performance.

    • “Optimization of the game - 10/10”
    • “Crossrays is also the first installation that emphasizes pilot's performance over MS, and allows even the weaker grunt unit to perform like a cutting-edge unit as long as the pilot is an ace themselves.”
    • “It runs smoothly, character/mecha details are great and smooth transition between starting and ending an attack animation sequence, also an added bonus is that they've taken proper BGM tracks from the series, which is normally a tricky situation when licensing these games outside of Japan; prime example being the Dynasty Warriors Gundam's western release.”
    • “This game isn't optimized very well, which is funny considering 90% of what you see is a 2D image, and only very few 3D models are on display. It's hilarious that they'd go through the trouble of actively making the game look worse when they could just use the 3D models everywhere.”
    • “As of now, the game is literally unplayable and is poorly optimized.”
    • “I can't even finish the first stage because after the cutscenes you get your results, and on the very next load, it crashes 100% of the time for me. Moving through menus too fast also causes a crash, and performance is horrible.”
  • stability
    42 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game has faced significant stability issues at launch, including frequent crashes, freezes, and various technical glitches that detract from the overall experience. While some players report that the developers have been quick to address these bugs with patches, many still find the game too buggy to justify its price. Overall, the stability remains a concern, particularly for PC users, with ongoing issues related to memory usage and save data management.

    • “The PC port is decent, with some caveats (a little bit of consolitis in the menu design, I haven't been able to get a resolution higher than 1920x1080 yet), but otherwise looks and runs great.”
    • “Not because of difficulty spikes, but frequent crashes and freezes.”
    • “I cannot fully explain what is causing it, but this game refuses to use the Steam cloud for its save data, and as a result, continuously eats up more and more memory until the game itself begins to create bugs and glitches due to insufficient space.”
    • “Disabling VSync in NVIDIA helps, but this game is far too buggy to be worth $45 on sale.”
  • replayability
    38 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game boasts exceptional replayability, with numerous difficulty levels and extensive content that encourages players to engage in character and unit development. Players can customize their experience through various campaigns, grinding for rewards, and tackling challenges at their own pace, ensuring a rich and rewarding gameplay experience. While some users noted minor issues, the overall consensus highlights the game's potential for hundreds of hours of replay value.

    • “There is an insane amount of replayability, and it eases you into it so well, so even though I have only 4 hours in, I still feel as though I have made progress with my mobile suits.”
    • “You can play through the stories of some of the best series (Gundam Wing) and the different difficulty levels with increased rewards allows for a lot of replay value, especially since you can make your own custom pilots and level both them and mobile suits up to transform into better ones, giving you a reason and reward to level grind.”
    • “With hundreds of hours of replay value, it's more than worth the price of admission!”
    • “Very little replayability so far.”
    • “The game has a high level of content before worrying about replayability, but even then each campaign mission has 3 difficulty modes making the enemies you face much more threatening.”
    • “First, the gameplay is turn-based tactical and is very well balanced, if not a bit slow. Each stage has 3 difficulties which makes for a bit of replayability.”
  • humor
    30 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The humor in the game is a mixed bag, with players enjoying funny character lines and amusing bugs, such as a launch-day glitch that caused absurd damage values. While some find the art style and voice lines entertaining, others feel the humor can become repetitive and that the game lacks the charm of previous Gundam titles. Overall, the comedic elements, including unintentional bugs, contribute to a lighthearted experience despite some performance issues.

    • “It is awesome to see some of my favorite characters spout funny new lines when they use mobile suits from other Gundam series!”
    • “Game had a hilarious bug that made all damage absurd at launch which was fixed within a couple of hours.”
    • “To address the naysayers, there was a launch day bug (for about an hour) where all damage values were multiplied by about 30x, which was hilarious and unintentional - it was patched almost instantly, but not before a couple hundred people rioted and gave one of the most promising games of 2019 a negative review.”
  • character development
    10 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Players appreciate the character development primarily for its unique design, drawing comparisons to popular franchises like Fafner and Gundam OO. The game simplifies character progression by allowing players to invest capital instead of points, which some find appealing despite a potentially confusing new UI. Overall, the character design and custom background music are highlighted as standout features that enhance the gaming experience.

    • “Aside from that, the custom BGM and character design are the main reasons I love this game; the new UI may seem a bit confusing, but I think it's not a big deal.”
    • “- Simplified certain aspects of character development; now you can just spend capital instead of points.”
    • “The character design is something that makes this game unique compared to its competitors.”
    • “Certain aspects of character development have been simplified; now you can just spend capital instead of points.”
    • “The new UI seems a bit confusing, which may affect the overall character development experience.”
  • emotional
    8 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The emotional aspect of the game resonates strongly with dedicated fans of the franchise, who appreciate the deep connection to beloved characters and suits, making the grind more bearable. However, newcomers may find the early gameplay tedious without prior investment in the series, as repetitive battle animations and a lack of engaging story elements can detract from the experience. Overall, the game offers significant fan-service and extensive content that can evoke strong feelings of nostalgia and excitement for long-time players.

    • “Gundam is a series with a deep notch in my heart, and after seeing Bandai reluctantly touching the PC market, with this game and feeling how nice it plays, I have to write the review.”
    • “We doubt that we need to tell fans of the franchise why this is such a worthy investment; the amount of fan-service (we're talking the good, wholesome variety here) is staggering and more than worth the admission price.”
    • “[Incredible, eye-watering glorious combat sequences, months of gameplay content even without touching any DLC, huge number and variety of units to unlock, develop and collect, full customization options for both gameplay and player-controlled squads.]”
    • “The battle animation visuals, though nice, become repetitive and too long. Without map fight animations, you end up playing a boring story on a dull playfield.”
    • “The battle animation visuals, though nice, become repetitive and too long. Without map fight animations, you end up playing a boring story on a dull playfield.”
  • atmosphere
    6 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Reviewers highlight the game's atmosphere as immersive and engaging, particularly praising the use of original soundtrack elements that enhance the storytelling experience. The ability of warships to navigate various environments, including space and atmosphere, contributes to a rich and dynamic setting that captivates players.

    • “For an old veteran like me, it makes me happy that they used the original soundtrack here. When playing the storyline, you can very easily indulge yourself in this fantastic atmosphere.”
  • monetization
    4 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The monetization model for SD Gundam G Generation Eternal is free-to-play with in-app purchases, but users criticize the excessive fragmentation of downloadable content (DLC), perceiving it as a cash grab by Bandai Namco.

    • “Bandai Namco has announced the Gundam strategy game SD Gundam G Generation Eternal for iOS and Android, which will be free-to-play with in-app purchases.”
    • “These DLCs are separated into way too many pieces for the cash grab.”
