    13 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's story is simple and serves as a backdrop for its gameplay, which includes a mix of mission-based objectives and character upgrades. While the core gameplay loop is enjoyable, players criticize the repetitive nature of missions and the lack of quality-of-life features, such as checkpoints, which can lead to frustrating experiences. Overall, the narrative is overshadowed by time-wasting mechanics and a steep learning curve, particularly for co-op play.

    • “There's plenty of levels, a simple story, and tons of fun & upgradeable weapons & gadgets.”
    • “The core loop in each mission is very satisfying and fun.”
    • “Outside of missions, one will research enemies, weapons, gadgets, build defenses for zones, and analyze zones.”
    • “The game loves to waste your time, from the first mission to the final mission.”
    • “You can lose an entire mission because your character fell onto another character or collided with a ledge during a jump, the ragdoll system gets activated and you basically lose half of the action time waiting for the character to get up, meaning that if this happens in the wrong position, the enemies will just overwhelm your characters.”
    • “Each of these actions take time measured in days, and after 40 days the enemies will take their turn, which gives the player the opportunity for a defend mission that are generally on the easy side.”
  • gameplay
    10 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay is generally enjoyable and addictive, featuring a unique blend of turn-based and real-time action that encourages strategic thinking, especially as difficulty increases. However, some players find the early missions unrepresentative of the overall experience, with certain enemy mechanics being unintuitive and maps lacking detail and variety. While the game offers fun movement and shooting mechanics, it can also feel time-consuming and restrict tactical maneuvers, leading to frustration in certain scenarios.

    • “Great game, love the gameplay.”
    • “Super addictive and incredibly fun strategy game for 1-2 players, featuring a unique mix of turn-based and real-time action gameplay.”
    • “Some of the enemy mechanics aren't intuitive (vampires and trolls being the worst offenders).”

  • graphics
    3 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's graphics feature a unique and nostalgic art style reminiscent of Dexter's Laboratory, which many players find appealing. However, the overall level of polish is lacking, detracting from the visual experience despite the enjoyable gameplay mechanics.

    • “The aesthetics and overall level of polish are surprisingly endearing.”
    • “The aesthetics and overall level of polish leave something to be desired.”
    • “The graphics feel outdated and lack the detail expected from modern games.”
    • “Character models are poorly designed and animations are stiff, making the visuals unappealing.”
  • humor
    3 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The humor in the game is a mix of cringe-worthy, self-indulgent writing reminiscent of 2010s memes, with moments that can be both irritating and amusing, such as a van's commentary on gameplay mechanics. While the comedic elements are colorful and comic-book-like, they often serve to enhance the challenging yet accessible nature of the turn-based strategy gameplay, with humorous mishaps arising from gadget use.

    • “The gadgets take some time to learn, but the unfavorable results for the player are often hilarious (nothing like rocket boosting straight into a wall).”
    • “Underneath the humorous and colorful, comic-book-like exterior of Research and Destroy lies a challenging, yet super-approachable turn-based strategy game.”
    • “The writing is cringe and clearly inspired by Borderlands, full of 2010s memes and references and self-indulgent humor.”

    • “The audio quality is subpar, making it hard to enjoy the experience.”
  • replayability
    3 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game offers significant replayability through a variety of weapons, gadgets, and levels, enhanced by co-op play and fun achievements. However, some players feel it lacks replay value since much of the content is revealed during the initial playthrough.

    • “With a range of weapons, gadgets, and levels, there's tons of replay value (plus fun achievements), and the co-op play makes it 10 times better!”
    • “It does lack replayability, as you’re shown everything on your first runthrough.”
