  • The graphics and art style are appealing, creating an immersive sci-fi atmosphere.
  • The community is helpful and supportive, making it easier for new players to navigate the game.
  • The game is currently in a very rough alpha state with many bugs and performance issues.
  • Voice acting and translations are poor, often leading to confusion during gameplay.
  • Quest markers and objectives are unclear, making it difficult to progress without external guides.
  • story
    408 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's story and quest system have received significant criticism, with many players finding the narrative lackluster and the quests confusing and poorly implemented. Most quests are described as repetitive "fetch" tasks with minimal guidance, leading to frustration due to unclear objectives and inadequate quest markers. While there is potential for an engaging experience, the current state of the story and quest mechanics detracts from overall enjoyment, leaving players feeling lost and unmotivated to progress.

    • “I know what to expect when in alpha or beta or early release and give the dev teams much leeway; I don’t expect perfect graphics, voice acting or even tons of content, but I do expect the foundations of the game to be promising, the mechanics, story and uniqueness are in place for a great gaming experience in due course.”
    • “If you think you will enjoy this game, and like to help mold/shape it then you should definitely give it a go - quests are not just go kill x amount, and you are not hand held for most of them, you have to go search and discover, and this may not work for all kinds of people, but it does go to show the true atmosphere of the game that is already apparent.”
    • “There is plenty to do with quests, and quests are everywhere, especially when you look at objects and whatnot and all of a sudden you'll pick up an object and it turns into a (side)quest.”
    • “The quests are garbage, can't even figure out where to go.”
    • “So the myriad of quests you pick up not long after the (all too brief and barely worth it) tutorial are unfinishable.”
    • “Your journal just states the mission or quest without any clues as to where to go.”
  • graphics
    226 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The graphics of the game have received mixed reviews, with many players praising the stunning visuals and art style, particularly for an early access title. However, several users noted performance issues, including lag and lower-than-expected graphical fidelity compared to promotional materials, leading to frustration. Overall, while the graphics show potential and are generally appealing, they require further optimization and refinement to meet player expectations.

    • “The graphics are amazing, the world is huge and the dynamic mission system is very original.”
    • “It has beautiful visuals and there seems plenty to do even in alpha.”
    • “The graphics are nice just by virtue of the game being in Unreal Engine 4.”
    • “Graphics aren't even half of what they are in the preview!”
    • “The dialogues, graphics, sounds, playability and lag are incredibly bad.”
    • “But despite the game has now been in early access for over 16 months, charging 20 euro for the main game and selling packs with in-game items for as much as 100 euro, and despite the devs putting out patches often, the game seems to have slowed to a crawl. Yes, the devs are putting out new content often, but they keep putting out things that look dated; the game already looks old.”
  • gameplay
    204 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay of Project Genom has received mixed reviews, with many players expressing frustration over bugs, incomplete features, and performance issues, particularly in its current alpha state. While some appreciate the graphics and potential mechanics, others criticize the lack of content, repetitive quests, and overall execution, suggesting that the game feels abandoned and is not yet ready for a full release. • “It has everything going for it: the setting, plot, gameplay, and character customization.”
    • “I really like the concept, atmosphere, and gameplay.”
    • “The gameplay, the basics, are solid enough.”
    • “The devs abandoned this game; the servers are no longer up, and even if they were, there was nothing to gameplay.”
    • “Project Genom has stopped receiving updates, and what's left of the game is a hot mess of incomplete game features, buggy mechanics, and downright broken as a whole (couldn't even play it without crashing or horrible FPS drops).”
    • “Boring as hell gameplay, and to get to the actual gameplay at the proper level takes longer than Steam's refund gameplay time limit.”
  • stability
    86 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The stability of Project Genom is severely lacking, with players reporting frequent crashes, significant lag, and persistent freezing issues, particularly on North American servers. Many users describe the game as a "buggy mess" in its current alpha state, making it nearly unplayable at times, while others note that the experience can vary depending on server choice. Overall, the game is not recommended for purchase due to its unstable performance and numerous technical issues.

    • “The community and the devs develop the content on the test servers, then once finished, they slam the main servers with the perfected, nearly bug-free content.”
    • “Project Genom has stopped receiving updates and what's left of the game is a hot mess of incomplete game features, buggy mechanics, and downright broken as a whole (couldn't even play it without crashing or horrible FPS drops).”
    • “Right now the game is unstable and buggy; I would not suggest buying the game right now.”
    • “The North American servers are basically non-working as it freezes for 10 seconds, then you play for like 20 seconds, and it repeats.”
  • monetization
    42 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The monetization aspect of the game has been overwhelmingly criticized, with many users labeling it as a "cash grab" due to its lack of content and updates. Players express frustration over the game's perceived abandonment and the feeling that it was hastily put together for profit rather than genuine engagement. While a few users find it enjoyable in its current state, the general sentiment leans heavily towards skepticism regarding its value and long-term viability.

    • “If a game is good, the majority of the community will think it's good, and support the developers by buying the game, making in-game purchases, and encouraging their friends to play the game as well.”
    • “The game was empty, bland, with virtually nothing to do, and in the end, wound up being little more than a cash grab.”
    • “I tried to give it time but with no updates in a very long time, it now feels like a big cash grab.”
    • “This game is a cash grab game for now until they start getting some of the stuff they said to be in the game.”
  • optimization
    38 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Overall, the game's optimization has received mixed reviews, with many players experiencing significant performance issues, such as low frame rates and long loading times. While some users note improvements and decent performance on lower-end systems, others find it barely playable and liken its optimization to that of poorly optimized titles like Ark. Ongoing development efforts are expected to address these issues, but players still report a need for further optimization and better server performance.

    • “With the code optimization work and tweaks happening at the moment, improvements will be seen there, and those same improvements should eradicate or vastly reduce the lag issues.”
    • “After only a few days they've done a lot to improve performance.”
    • “I've played worse games that have been released, honestly - and I will also say the game is pretty well optimized for early access.”
    • “I really like this type of game, but the optimization and all that... this is barely playable.”
    • “Aside from many loading and optimization issues, this game currently has very little content.”
    • “Poor optimization (looks like it's capped at 50 fps) - no settings influence on frame rate.”
  • humor
    36 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The humor in the game is characterized by its intentionally bad voice acting, particularly the thick Russian accents, which many players find amusing. Players appreciate the comedic elements in character interactions, quest dialogues, and environmental references, often likening the humor to that of low-budget films. While some jokes may be lost in translation, the overall experience is enhanced by funny physics and quirky game mechanics, making it enjoyable for those who appreciate a lighthearted approach to gameplay.

    • “Slogging back and forth on quests can get tedious as it does in any MMO, but there is already a mount included in the alpha that has hilarious physics and makes exploring much better.”
    • “Get this game if it's on a really good special purely for the hilariously bad voice acting.”
    • “Audio overall is pretty cool, but the background music always seems to be playing directionally from an environmental source, which is kind of weird (it's pretty funny imagining a sci-fi space station playing nothing but generic MMO music like an inoffensive shopping mall).”
  • music
    34 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The music in the game has received mixed reviews, with some players appreciating the decent soundtrack and its calm, fitting nature that changes with different areas. However, many users have criticized the loud background music, which lacks adjustable sound options, making it difficult to enjoy other audio or gameplay without distraction. Overall, while the music is described as subtle and not overly intrusive, its repetitive nature can become irritating over time.

    • “The game has a decent soundtrack.”
    • “Sound isn't bad, music nice and not too 'in your face' - subtle.”
    • “Calm and fitting music to play to, changes with areas.”
    • “The music is simply floating somewhere in space and is really disorienting.”
    • “The background music plays loudly and there is no way to turn down or turn off the music.”
    • “After playing the game for more than an hour, the music can become really irritating.”
  • grinding
    26 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The grinding aspect of the game has received mixed reviews, with many players finding it excessively tedious, likening it to the grind-heavy experiences of titles like EVE Online and Elite Dangerous. While some enjoy the social aspect of grinding with friends and appreciate the game's content and exploration opportunities, others criticize the need for extensive grinding to progress, suggesting that it detracts from overall gameplay enjoyment. Overall, players are advised to approach the game's grinding elements with caution, as it may require significant time investment for limited rewards.

    • “The gameplay does not make me want to play, and the enemies are better programmed for what it is; lots of grinding and fetching you expect from all average MMO grind spam games.”
    • “Imho, if you need to spend 9 hours grinding to enjoy 1 hour of gameplay, your content obviously isn't enough to keep people playing on its own.”
    • “It's extremely grindy (like, 100 mobs+ per level, grindy).”
  • atmosphere
    12 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The atmosphere of the game is widely praised for its unique sci-fi setting, art style, and immersive gameplay, which encourages exploration and discovery rather than traditional quest structures. Reviewers note that despite being in early access, the game already conveys a polished atmosphere that enhances the overall experience, making it appealing for players who enjoy shaping the game's development.

    • “The art style, atmosphere, and setting are all fantastic.”
    • “A unique sci-fi atmosphere.”
    • “If you think you will enjoy this game, and like to help mold/shape it then you should definitely give it a go - quests are not just go kill x amount, and you are not hand-held for most of them, you have to go search and discover, and this may not work for all kinds of people, but it does go to show the true atmosphere of the game that is already apparent.”
    • “Tldr: it is EA/alpha, there are lots of things not in, but the game itself is polished enough for EA/alpha to get an atmosphere and feel for the game, and enough content to keep you happy if you want it, and if the game seems like the game you might enjoy when all the features mentioned are in - then no harm in getting now to try.”
    • “The controls, the atmosphere, combat, it all feels like me.”
  • character development
    4 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Character development in the game features an interesting system that facilitates quick leveling, but is hindered by a lack of customization options and reliance on placeholder designs for characters.
