The gameplay experience is marred by confusing mechanics and a lackluster tutorial, making it difficult for players to grasp the basics without significant effort. While the game focuses on accessible automation and travel mechanics, many non-building aspects, such as mining and farming, are plagued by bugs and rough animations. Overall, the game offers addictive elements but suffers from a lack of polish and clarity, particularly for inexperienced players.
“And it is by no means anything really groundbreaking, but the mechanics that it does put its focus into (automation and travel) are very easily accessible in a straightforward format.”
“I was playing on the logic mechanical game mode for over five hours as I became very addicted to the game.”
“This game is giving me the tools to build from scratch or use pre-loaded templates while I figure out how the mechanics work.”
“I want to play a game for the game, not to spend hours figuring out how the basic mechanics work...”
“Animations for mining are really low effort (just shows the block shrinking), lots of graphical bugs, and the gameplay tutorial is a bit confusing.”
“Nothing seems to work properly, too many bugs, some mechanics seem to not have been fleshed out completely yet, and many things are confusing UI-wise.”

The graphics in the game are generally praised for their charm and beauty, featuring a simplistic, voxel art style that is visually appealing, especially in the context of space and creature design. However, there are notable issues, including low-effort animations, graphical bugs, and some distracting artifacts, particularly when viewing the sky. Overall, while the visuals are considered lovely and unique, they are marred by inconsistencies and technical flaws.
“Also, even though Outerverse has a Minecrafty simplistic art style, it's a really pretty game.”
“The automation can be pretty complex but you'll learn by doing pretty fast, the graphics look great, the space is awesome, and the creatures are still kind of cute.”
“A lovely game, and some great visuals!”
“Animations for mining are really low effort (just shows the block shrinking), lots of graphical bugs, gameplay tutorial is a bit confusing.”
“Graphics: very voxel, fast, occasional bright artifacts invade the screen (running 5120x1400).”
“Art work for tools is terrible.”

The story in the game is described as engaging, offering quests that provide a unique experience compared to other voxel sandbox games. However, players have encountered significant issues with unclear quest instructions and mechanics, leading to frustration and confusion. Overall, while the narrative elements are intriguing, the execution of the quest system detracts from the overall enjoyment.
“Overall it was rather engaging for me than Minecraft or even other voxel sandbox games I have played before as it offered me quests and something to think about.”
“This crazy game I've only played for 4 hours but in that time quests are fun and exploring is more fun. The best part about this game is that you never saw this anywhere else; the world is like a reverse cube. Once you walk to the edge of the land and jump forward, you're in a whole new place. When you jump forward, the world tilts and pushes you forward, and you can turn around and look behind you, and everything is at a different angle. It's cool, weird, but good. What scared me to death was a huge tree titan. I was too busy gathering carrots and came up on it not realizing it was a boss. You gotta try this game; it's so cool!”
“The story so far is okay.”
“I did not go to automation & machine building because the quest system and crafting is incredibly unclear.”
“The story so far is ok.”
“- a quest where I had to build some automated iron machine validated itself while I was deconstructing my manual one and I had nearly nowhere near the needed component.”

The game's optimization is severely lacking, with players reporting significant performance issues, including frame drops and bugs, even on the lowest settings. Many reviewers express frustration with the developer's inadequate responses and ineffective solutions to these problems, suggesting that the game should not have been released in its current state. Overall, the consensus is that the game feels unfinished and is not worth purchasing until substantial optimizations are made.
“It definitely shows its early access status; there are awkward parts, performance efficiencies that could be improved, the occasional bug.”
“Unfortunately, it is very resource hungry and I can barely play it on all-low and optimized for performance.”
“The game world is not moving in friendly agreement but is at an ugly jittery frame dropping war with itself and these two features because of this state of the game are not viable performance solutions and are useless yet the developer just keeps repeating to use them to solve FPS issues regardless of being informed that these are not enough.”
“After playing now for about 40 hours, I would not advise anyone to buy this game. This game should not have left beta as it is riddled with bugs, issues, and performance problems.”

“A developer saying nothing is wrong or 'I don't know what you mean,' or having screenshots laid before them of horrible bloom and lighting and saying that it is as intended, or saying maybe we will do some optimizations... maybe... repeating that players use sliders and features that resolve very little issues, just repeating and repeating like a stone. This is the wrong attitude for an early access game.”
