  • graphics
    84 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The graphics of the game receive mixed reviews, with some players appreciating the cartoony visuals and character customization, while others criticize the overall quality, describing them as outdated or poorly optimized. Many users note issues such as graphical glitches, lack of detail, and performance problems, particularly on certain hardware. Overall, while some find the graphics enjoyable and fitting for a casual Olympic-style game, others feel they fall short of modern standards.

    • “I love the graphics and how many sports are in this game.”
    • “The graphics are gorgeous.”
    • “The cartoony visuals and sounds set the atmosphere for enjoyment, but there isn't much attention to detail for each nation.”
    • “The graphics are terrible and most of the gameplay is monotonous and old-fashioned.”
    • “I can't even give praise to the graphics because Sega made the baffling decision of going for some halfway compromise between outwardly cartoony Mii-style figures and realistic humans, giving us anthropomorphic bobbleheads.”
    • “Clunky graphics are poor... half-hearted effort and they just haven't put much into it; not many disciplines to choose from and definitely not worth £30 or more... this is a £10 game if that!”
  • gameplay
    81 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay of the game has received mixed reviews, with many players noting its arcade-like mechanics and button-mashing nature, which can feel shallow and repetitive. While the graphics and character customization are praised, the controls are often criticized for being unresponsive and clunky, leading to frustration in various sports events. Overall, the game is seen as more enjoyable in multiplayer settings, but many players feel it lacks depth and replay value, making it a disappointing experience for those seeking a more realistic sports simulation.

    • “The gameplay of Tokyo 2020 is simple, but demanding enough (at least until you start mastering it).”
    • “It offers arcade-like gameplay along with a wide selection of sports, and features solo play, local multiplayer, as well as online play.”
    • “Overall the gameplay is fun and a lot of laughs, it just such a big miss that they haven't supported local play properly by having more than two players and letting those players create an avatar.”
    • “Honestly, this game is only really fun with friends. There are a few fun games among the lot, but some test your patience for how badly they are made. The tennis in this game is horrible; I have played many tennis games on all kinds of consoles, and this is the worst one by far. Not only does the game glitch out, but your character doesn't do what you want him to do. My biggest problem is when I hold my left stick to the left or right to hit the ball in that direction, and the character just hits it forward or toward the opponent. It's like I'm holding the correct direction, and it's not doing what I'm telling it to do. I've also seen the opponent use his super with 75% bar. Boxing has those problems too, and don't get me started on the CPU reading inputs for the game. Any game that's not just button mashing has input reading for the CPU. Half the games you just lose if you don't know a mechanic because you have to play a game enough times for the game to give you the tip, and unless you perfect the way you play one of the games, you just won't win. Baseball is another mode to stay away from; if you're not good at timing, stay away from this game.”
    • “The gameplay is not representing the sport fairly; it's basically an arcade game with 'Olympic' in the name. The controls are horrible to play, and the gameplay is not even close to what it should be. The game mechanics are broken, it runs poorly, and the AI difficulty always spikes. The gameplay is extremely boring, and the servers are so laggy that it is impossible to play together. It's comical and looks okay visually, but man, the gameplay is atrocious in almost every sport.”
    • “The games are literally just mini-games with no depth to them whatsoever. There is no replay value, and the mechanics are too simple and shallow. I wouldn't recommend this game; it has very dry gameplay and no progression at all. The few sports have mechanics that feel weird or strange. I don't expect a soccer game like FIFA mechanics, but at least make it feel decent. This game has terrible optimization and gameplay.”
  • humor
    36 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The humor in the game is largely derived from its absurd character customization options and the clunky gameplay mechanics, which many players find amusing despite the game's overall poor quality. Users report laughing at the ridiculous scenarios and costumes, often enjoying the game more for its comedic value than its competitive aspects. While some find it entertaining in a "so bad it's good" way, others caution against purchasing it, suggesting it's best enjoyed for free with friends.

    • “First thing you'll be doing is creating your Olympic athlete and you'll notice right away that the game not only has a sense of humor, but wants you to get creative with your character.”
    • “The custom outfits and outrageous character creation can lead to some funny moments.”
    • “Extremely hilarious if you play this game for free in a so bad it's good kind of way; the games are so bad and the character creator is so ridiculous I choked laughing.”
  • optimization
    26 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's optimization has received overwhelmingly negative feedback, with many users reporting significant performance issues such as lag, stuttering, and low frame rates, particularly on PC. While some players have found ways to improve performance through tips and tricks, the overall consensus is that the game is poorly optimized, especially for keyboard and mouse controls, leading to a frustrating experience. Additionally, the game's graphics settings are limited, and many players have experienced connection problems that further hinder gameplay.

    • “I have to say I disagree, once you learn the tips and little tricks you can do to boost your performance, it just takes a bit of repetition to snag the gold in almost all of the games.”
    • “The graphics are nice once you finally locate the settings menu, and I haven't experienced any of the performance issues I've read about online.”
    • “But that character optimization is one of the best I've seen.”
    • “The game is absolutely not optimized for keyboard and mouse; in some sports, you cannot win unless you have a controller, because the key the game wants you to press simply doesn't exist on the keyboard or is too awkwardly placed.”
    • “It is so poorly optimized that I had to run it in the lowest resolution I could (to the point of looking like a PS2 game), and even then, it still chugged at points.”
    • “The game optimization is terrible; in-game I get around 60 fps, but for whatever reason, in the title screens and cut scenes at the beginning/end of events, it goes down to 2-3 fps, and I just couldn't sit through that.”
  • stability
    16 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game is widely criticized for its poor stability, with numerous reports of glitches, lag, and random freezes that disrupt gameplay. Many users feel it is not worth its price due to these performance issues, describing it as a buggy and unfinished product. While some appreciate the concept, the overall consensus highlights significant stability problems that detract from the experience.

    • “This game is absolutely not worth £30; it's buggy and broken, and the fun is very limited. It's only priced high because some Australians did a video of it on YouTube.”
    • “It's very clunky, with lots of performance issues, random freezes, and stutters that seem intentional and just break up the flow.”
    • “Game freezes and will just kick you from custom lobbies.”
  • story
    12 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game lacks a traditional story mode, with users noting that it primarily consists of selecting minigames without any narrative context. Many reviewers express disappointment over the absence of a career or story-driven experience, comparing it unfavorably to other games that offer richer storytelling. Overall, the consensus is that the game is fun but suffers from a significant lack of replay value due to its minimal story elements.

    • “Epic story.”
    • “It feels a lot like the Sonic Olympics game, just without a story.”
    • “Like playing 'Candy Crush' for the story.”
    • “No story mode and very unfun.”
    • “There is no career or story mode involved; it is just choose your minigame.”
    • “This game can be fun, but with a lack of replay value, no story mode, and missing fun events, I cannot give a full recommendation.”
  • music
    11 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The music in the game receives mixed reviews; while some players praise the charming soundtrack, particularly the main menu theme, others find it annoying and distracting. Notably, the absence of licensed tracks from popular artists like Avicii and Gorillaz, which were featured in previous titles, has disappointed some fans. Overall, the soundtrack is seen as a highlight by some, but not universally appreciated.

    • “The start menu instrumental is the best song of any video game score this year.”
    • “Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 – The Official Video Game™ has a great soundtrack.”
    • “To begin with, I wanted to touch on the soundtrack quickly, as I think this is one of the most charming aspects of the game.”
    • “I couldn't even play the game; it would go to a black screen and just play the music.”
    • “The music is annoying as hell; the sound effects are okay.”
    • “No licensed music from Afrojack, Avicii, Gorillaz, Pitbull, Bieber, etc., like London had.”
  • monetization
    10 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The monetization aspect of the game is widely criticized as a blatant cash grab, with many reviewers expressing disappointment over its low-quality presentation and lack of content. While there are no microtransactions and players can earn costumes through gameplay, the overall sentiment suggests that the game's pricing and perceived value do not align, leading to a negative reception.

    • “There's no DLC or microtransactions.”
    • “You earn currency by playing the game, which you can use to buy costumes (no microtransactions, yay!).”
    • “This game is essentially a cash grab.”
    • “Unfortunately feels like a very low-budget cash grab, save your money :(”
    • “- this looks, feels and smells like a huge cash grab, developed by a team that was pushed to get something out with zero care about the final product.”
  • replayability
    8 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Overall, the game's replayability is a mixed bag; while some players find it high due to the variety of sports and quick events, others criticize it for lacking depth, engaging mechanics, and a story mode, leading to a diminished replay value.

    • “However, the replayability is very high for this game and all the different types of sports make for a very fun experience.”
    • “Gameplay events are quick and very replayable.”
    • “Replayability is superb.”
    • “This game can be fun, but with a lack of replay value, no story mode, and missing fun events, I cannot give a full recommendation.”

    • “The grinding feels endless and tedious.”
    • “I spent hours grinding, and it felt like I made no progress.”
