“The gameplay is fun, but menu navigation is not easy.”

“This game immediately let me down as the gameplay was clunky and the graphics were laughably bad.”

The game's stability is heavily criticized, with numerous reports of persistent bugs, glitches, and performance issues that detract from the overall experience. Players have noted frequent crashes, frame rate drops, and unresponsive gameplay, particularly in online modes, leading to frustration and a sense that the developers have neglected necessary fixes. While some users find enjoyment in the gameplay, the overwhelming consensus is that the game is plagued by instability and lacks polish.
“If it runs great for you, I'd recommend it.”

“The game is full of bugs and game-breaking glitches.”
“To be fair, 2K sports games on PC have always been really buggy in many ways, but this year the variety and consistency of the bugs are pretty damn egregious.”

The music in the game has received a mixed reception, with many praising the diverse and engaging soundtrack that features popular artists across various genres, particularly hip-hop and rap. While some players find the music to be one of the game's highlights, others criticize the inability to adjust audio settings and the presence of censored tracks that detract from the experience. Overall, the soundtrack is seen as a significant improvement over previous titles, with a wide selection that keeps players entertained.

- monetization56 mentions

The monetization strategy of the game has been widely criticized as a blatant cash grab, heavily relying on microtransactions that are deemed necessary to fully enjoy the experience. Players express frustration over the freemium-inspired systems, which not only hinder achievement completion but also force users to spend real money to remain competitive. Overall, the game's focus on monetization over quality has led to disappointment among gamers, who feel that the developers prioritize profit over player experience.
“With 2K15, 2K introduced VC to the game. You earn VC by playing matches, be it online, MyCareer, MyPark, or whatever. While you can earn them, you can also buy them with real money, and 2K this year made sure you can't get enough VC without paying for them.”
“So all in all, while the basis of the game is still a good basketball game, it has too many bugs, glitches, flaws, and cheaters, with 2K apparently only caring about saving their precious microtransactions and nothing else.”
“It's also now impossible to get all achievements or play on MyTeam, which means a lot of wasted time and/or money if you bought into the microtransactions.”
“This game feels like the biggest cash grab yet, and that's saying a lot given the antics of last year's game.”
“They care more about milking people for money from microtransactions than their actual game.”

The grinding aspect of the game is widely criticized for being tedious and unrewarding, with many players expressing frustration over the lengthy processes required to earn in-game currency and unlock upgrades. The pay-to-win elements exacerbate the issue, making progression feel imbalanced and often leading to repetitive gameplay experiences that detract from overall enjoyment. Many reviewers suggest that the grind is so excessive that it feels more like a chore than a rewarding part of the game.
“This is a triple-A title with pay-to-win elements with absurd imbalances that make grinding unrewarding.”
“Nothing frustrates a gamer more than grinding and losing that progression, and having to do it all over again.”
“The game mechanics are good, but what kills the game for me are the hacked players online, the long grinding to unlock new attribute points (even if you zip through games and practices), and the fact that the promised VC for people who pre-purchased the game was never delivered.”

The humor in the game is described as a mix of amusing bugs and absurd situations, often leading to laughter despite the game's flaws. Players find the commentary from the TNT studio crew, particularly Shaquille O'Neal, entertaining, while the game's mechanics and design choices are sometimes hilariously illogical. Overall, the humor is a highlight, even if it stems from the game's shortcomings.
“While many things are not perfect and I've encountered numerous bugs, both hilarious and infuriating, I would recommend this game over any of the newer 2K installments.”
“The TNT studio crew (Ernie Johnson, Shaquille O'Neal, and Kenny Smith - no Charles Barkley, sadly) is usually interesting and funny, especially Shaq.”
“Oh - and it's pretty hilarious to have my own shoe after half a season making 8 PPG coming off the bench.”
“What's not funny is only being able to play 8 games your rookie season and stick you at 55 overall no matter what you've done (product of my character select being a 5'8" PG I guess even though I averaged 25+).”

The emotional aspect of the game is a mixed bag, with many players finding the MyCareer storyline deeply affecting, often evoking strong feelings and even tears due to its poignant moments. However, some criticize the narrative elements, particularly the Spike Lee storyline, as tedious and detracting from gameplay. Overall, while the game offers a strong emotional experience, it also includes cringe-worthy moments that can undermine its impact.
“MyCareer this year has given me the most emotional turmoil, ever.”
“Although it is a small price you pay for such an emotional, strong storyline.”
“I love it, I just love it! Great game, the MyCareer made me cry not because it was bad, but because the story was sad.”
“The Spike Lee storyline is just a colossal waste of time. I just want to create a player and start my rookie season. I don't care about the boring story or the corny acting; it ruins the first season by not letting you develop until your second season.”

“MyCareer gives the game replay value, allowing players to enjoy multiple seasons and experiences.”
“The replayability factor is strong, making it easy to dive back into the game for more fun and challenges.”
“As for the other modes, I guess they're better than 2K15, but judge it like a salad and MyCareer was like the dressing. I always figured that MyCareer gives the game replay value... such a sad day in PC gaming history. What a disappointment!”

NBA 2K16 Review (PlayStation 4)
NBA 2K16 is a great sports simulation, a title packed with content that will allow basketball lovers to live out their fantasies, create some impressive matches, and experience presentation that rivals real-world broadcasts. The only major problem with the package is that the Livin' Da Dream narrative is relatively poor, given the hype associated with the involvement of Spike Lee, and some people might actually give up on MyCareer early because of it. But even those who do so will be able to find a lot to love in MyGM or MyTeam, two modes that have been upgraded to offer even more options than before, creating basketball worlds that feel believable and surprising at the same time.

InterfaceNBA 2K16's menus take way too long to load. It's an issue that every sports sim has addressed, but NBA 2K16 continues to lag behind in this area.Lasting AppealMultiple career modes, a very solid Ultimate Team mode, and the simple fun of playing with friends means that NBA 2K16 will last you for a very long time. Or at least until NBA 2K17.SoundNBA 2K16 continues to have excellent commentary. The voice acting, however, continues to leave something to be desired, vacilating between total deadpan (every NBA star) and total insanity (your agent).VisualsNBA 2K16 is one of the best-looking sports games around and has by far the most entertaining presentation, featuring a wide variety of intros and a well-produced pre-game show.ConclusionNBA 2K16 is definitely hurt by Livin Da' Dream, which is problematic in ways that go beyond the scope of this review. It just doesn't work. Once you get past MyCareer, though, NBA 2K16 once again stands out as a top-tier sports sim. Here's hoping this setback won't stop Visual Concepts from continuing to push the envelope with their design decisions, because it continues to be their most admirable quality.
