MX vs. ATV Supercross Encore

MX vs. ATV Supercross Encore is a bad remaster. There's a ton of content to be found here, but the unreliable physics, iffy controls, and immensely erratic framerate ruin what could otherwise have been a decent budget title. Sadly, those looking for their MX vs. ATV fix are much better off waiting for Rainbow Studios to develop a new instalment in this series specifically for the PS4.

  • Customization options for bikes and characters are enjoyable and add depth to the game.
  • The graphics, while not perfect, show some improvement over previous titles in the series.
  • The physics and handling of the bikes feel unrealistic and can be frustrating for players used to previous titles.
  • There are significant performance issues, including low frame rates and crashes, especially on outdoor tracks.
  • The game lacks content variety and features, making it feel repetitive and less engaging compared to earlier entries in the series.
  • graphics
    231 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The graphics of the game have received overwhelmingly negative feedback, with many users describing them as outdated, resembling titles from over a decade ago. Complaints include poor texture quality, lack of graphical options, and significant performance issues, particularly on PC. While some players noted acceptable graphics in certain aspects, the overall consensus is that the game feels like a poorly executed console port with minimal improvements.

    • “Graphics are nice, the tracks are really well built, the game runs amazing (on both my computer with a GTX 1080, and my friend's computer with a 1050), the multiplayer is pretty good when there are people playing, the connection is pretty solid, and you can play with a manual transmission!”
    • “The graphics are good.”
    • “Graphics - awesome!”
    • “Graphically, the game looks very dated, and whatever anti-aliasing this is, it surely doesn't do the job.”
    • “The port is pretty shoddy and the graphics can't be adjusted; it looks like it's running native 480p on the textures.”
    • “The graphics are absolutely terrible, and there's no in-game options to improve them, so the anti-aliasing remains all jagged and pixelated.”
  • optimization
    106 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's optimization has been widely criticized, with many users reporting poor performance even on high-end systems, making it feel like a poorly executed console port. Despite some recent updates that improved performance for a few players, the overall consensus is that significant optimization issues remain, leading to frustrating gameplay experiences. Many reviewers express hope for future patches to address these shortcomings, but currently, the game's optimization is considered severely lacking.

    • “Graphics are okay, performance is very good now and driving makes a lot of fun.”
    • “Besides the optimization issues, the game is feeling a lot better since the last update; the ground is no longer ice, and your bike gets traction.”
    • “This is an amazing game if you can get over the optimization issues... that's about it.”
    • “Really bad performance even on a high-end rig.”
    • “If it isn't already painfully obvious from the previous reviews, this game has some serious optimization issues that still have not been addressed.”
    • “There are no features in play for PC, no graphics settings aside from resolution, and the optimization is worse than piss poor; it's non-existent.”
  • gameplay
    66 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay of this racing game features a mix of engaging mechanics, particularly the "reflex" system that requires players to master weight shifting during jumps, but it is marred by issues such as poorly optimized AI that can exploit track boundaries for an unfair advantage. While some players appreciate the nuanced mechanics and find the gameplay addictive when running smoothly, many criticize it for being overly arcade-like, lacking polish, and feeling unfinished compared to previous titles in the series. Overall, the experience is polarizing, with a significant divide between those who enjoy the mechanics and those who find them frustrating.

    • “To put it simply, it's a specific mechanic, something for you to learn initially, later master, and it has quite the high skill ceiling.”
    • “When running smooth, the gameplay is very fun and the online multiplayer racing is very addictive.”
    • “So far in the game the physics are solid and the gameplay is easy if you have played Reflex/Alive, etc. I can't wait to see how this game evolves.”
    • “Unfortunately, the driving mechanics, which make up the main part of this game, are awful.”
    • “I had faith in Nordic Games to deliver a better product than Reflex and Alive, but they managed to release what feels like a poorly optimized, half-baked copy of MX vs ATV Unleashed with the shoddiest 'rider control' mechanics ever imagined.”
    • “As a long-time MX vs ATV fan, I can say this game really does suck; it's just Alive with worse gameplay and SX tracks, and then they have the cheek to stick the old Alive MX tracks in the game which no one ever plays!”
  • stability
    18 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's stability is heavily criticized, with users reporting frequent bugs, low frame rates, and crashes, even on high-end systems. Issues such as missing textures and unresponsive controls, particularly with the PlayStation 4 controller, further exacerbate the experience. Despite some users finding temporary fixes through system tweaks, the overall consensus is that the game remains unstable and poorly optimized.

    • “I've made some tweaks to my system (disabling Crossfire and AMD Gaming App) and the game runs great.”
    • “The game somehow managed to turn itself the opposite way and refuse to run at a stable pace at all. Not only did I have to deal with several bugs, missing textures, game freezes, and sometimes the game flat out crashing for no apparent reason, but things weren't looking like they'd ever change.”
    • “Coming back a few years later, the game is still buggy.”
    • “Often times using a PlayStation 4 controller, leaning in doesn't work at all; it won't react and just freezes, leading to crashing.”
  • music
    15 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The music in the game features a mix of nostalgic tracks from previous titles, which some players appreciate, but many find the overall soundtrack to be dated and repetitive. While there are standout songs that enhance the experience, others detract from the mood, leading to a general consensus that the music could benefit from more variety and modern updates. Overall, the soundtrack elicits mixed feelings, with some players preferring to recreate original tracks for a better experience.

    • “But I did hear some of the old Reflex songs and I was really excited to hear those again because they are amazing.”
    • “The music is alright, certainly needs more though.”
    • “The soundtrack is dated for the time and doesn't hold up to modern standards, gameplay is still very sticky and glue-like.”
    • “I was incredibly disappointed... in fact, my favorite part of the game so far has been recreating the original soundtrack to listen while playing.”
    • “The music is alright, but it certainly needs more.”
  • humor
    12 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The humor in the game is primarily derived from its amusing stunts and the comedic mishaps experienced by both players and AI characters. While some players may not initially appreciate this aspect, many find the game to be entertaining and funny, particularly during gameplay moments that evoke laughter. Overall, the humor adds a lighthearted touch to the motocross experience.

    • “Funny game big motocross.”
    • “The little time I have played (and when it worked well with minimal graphics) was really funny.”
    • “What's funny is that I didn't even like that aspect of the game, but I will get there.”
  • story
    8 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game has been criticized for lacking a story, with multiple users expressing disappointment and requesting refunds due to its unfinished state. Reviewers strongly advise against purchasing it, suggesting that it fails to deliver any narrative content.

    • “Moral of the story is I cannot believe they were okay with releasing this half-finished game; Reflex is still better and I would highly not recommend spending your money on this.”
    • “No story.”
    • “Yes, that is long enough when the game has no story; refund requested.”
  • grinding
    6 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Players express frustration with the grinding required in "Graphic MX vs. ATV Supercross Encore," noting that unlocking bikes demands a significant time investment, likening the experience to a farming simulator. The lack of cheats to expedite this process further compounds the grind, making it feel excessively time-consuming.

    • “You'll need a second life for grinding.”
    • “No cheats to unlock all bikes, so you will be grinding for a long time to unlock the 650's or the 50-pit bike.”
    • “Graphic MX vs. ATV Supercross Encore reminded me of a farming sim; quite a lot of detail from the vehicles, but the environment and everything else suffers from textures straight from two generations ago.”
  • replayability
    4 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Players note that recent updates have improved the game's playability and enjoyment, enhancing its overall experience. However, many feel that it still lacks sufficient content and features to significantly boost its replayability.

    • “More features and tweaks have been added to the game that have made it a little more playable.”
  • atmosphere
    2 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Users note that certain stadiums share a similar atmosphere, creating a consistent experience across different venues. This uniformity contributes to a recognizable and immersive environment for fans.

    • “Some stadiums even have the same atmosphere and feel.”
