Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash
Nintendo’s best competitive sports title is just as thrilling as ever, but feels a little too familiar and light on content.

In the Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash game, tennis meets the outrageous action of the Super Mario series. Smash the ball down the court with the new Jumpshot and gain a HUGE advantage over opponents in a brand-new mode, Mega Battle, by grabbing a Mega Mushroom. Outwit your rivals and challenge friends to singles and doubles matches as your favorite Mushroom Kingdom character!

- gameplay9 mentions Positive Neutral Negative
The gameplay is characterized by fast-paced, arcade-style action with nuanced mechanics that enhance local multiplayer experiences. However, it suffers from a lack of diverse game modes and meaningful progression, leading to occasional frustrations and a sense of mediocrity. While the core mechanics are solid and visually appealing, the overall experience may not provide enough incentive for long-term engagement.
“Fast-paced, arcadey action, deceptively nuanced shot mechanics, and a competitive formula that is perfect for local multiplayer.”
“Beautifully presented HD visuals, and simple gameplay mechanics mean fun for all ages.”
“The basic gameplay is strong, has slick performance and handsome if basic visuals; as a multiplayer game it can be enormously enjoyable, too.”
“Lack of game modes and alternate ways to play, little to work towards beyond simple unlockables, occasional gameplay frustrations.”
“The fact that it's a mechanically solid sporting experience can't save it from mediocrity or a lack of any real reason to come back, and that's really the worst sin a sports game can commit.”
“Still the same familiar gameplay, mega ball rally, no tournament mode.”

Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash was always designed to be a filler title as we wait for Xenoblade X, Star Fox Zero, and Zelda U. It's unfortunate that not a lot of effort was put into the game, but it's still enjoyable enough as it is. Once the price tag drops, I'll be willing to recommend it.
