The story has received mixed reviews, with some praising its intriguing twists and engaging pacing, while others criticize its predictability and underdeveloped world-building. Although the narrative attempts to evoke a sense of epic adventure, many players feel disconnected from the characters due to poor dialogue and a lack of depth. “This game has heart and someone involved that clearly loved the same games I did growing up, was able to add their own flair and story and made something almost perfect.”
“The writing and storytelling in general are really amateurish, which plays into the levels feeling less like places and more like traditional platforming levels with sluggish controls.”
“The plot device of the character's condition is resolved so suddenly with little to no explanation that it makes me wonder what the point of it was in the first place.”
“Third, the story is so underdeveloped that you don't really get a sense of the world, of what's happening, or the true motives behind the actions of the people presented, so you're not really connected to anyone.”

Even our minor frustrations with Lunark can’t overshadow the joy we felt as we played this unashamedly retro platformer. It is a competently put-together and lovingly crafted homage to an often-overlooked genre of gaming. Even the imprecise controls and Leo’s sluggish movements feel like a feature and not a bug in the game’s design. If you can wrap your head around them, there is a solid platformer to enjoy.

Lunark is a gripping action-platformer that perfectly captures what made the old-school titles that inspired it SO good. Between the creative level design, the slick platforming, the creative puzzling, and the wonderful visuals, it gets so much right, and whilst some aspects of its design may feel questionable to those who aren’t experienced with this style of game, it felt brilliant to me. Just PLEASE, Canari Games… add an auto-save to each checkpoint.
