Lumines Game Cover

Lumines is a rhythm-based puzzle game featuring block-dropping challenges similar to Tetris and Columns. The objective is to create 2x2 squares of the same color, which will disappear after the timeline, synchronized to the music, sweeps over them. The game ends when too many unmatched blocks pile up, preventing the dropping of new blocks. Multi-player and single-player modes offer amazing music and increasing difficulty as players advance through levels or skins.

The music in the game is generally praised for its energetic and rhythmic integration with gameplay, enhancing the overall experience. However, many users express disappointment with the PC port, which lacks the original's licensed tracks and has timing issues that disrupt the musical flow. While the soundtrack remains enjoyable, it is noted that subsequent entries have not maintained the high quality of the earlier games.

    • “One of my all-time favorite games... the gameplay, the music... everything is just perfect.”
    • “Lumines is a very unique puzzle game that blends fast-paced puzzling with music.”
    • “The captivating music and sound effects fit its addictive nature very well.”
    • “Absolutely hated the lousy work someone’s done with the PC port, mainly because they screwed up the 'clearing wall' timing for most of the tracks, so extra kicks in the music mix for doing combos sounded out of sync with the main song.”
    • “The PC version could have stood apart and allowed custom songs/themes, but instead it recycles some of the most generic songs from previous entries.”
    • “Every entry since then has gotten a little worse in my opinion regarding music.”

The gameplay is characterized by fluid mechanics and engaging color-matching puzzles, reminiscent of previous PSP and Vita releases. While the core experience remains addictive and enjoyable, the port lacks some popular licensed tracks and the competitive vs mode from earlier titles, which slightly diminishes its overall appeal. Nonetheless, the combination of clean graphics and a unique clear-bar mechanic keeps players hooked for extended sessions.

    • “The music is good, the animations are fun, and the gameplay is fluid.”
    • “The same classic puzzle gameplay is as solid as ever.”
    • “It's a great color matching/block busting game with a unique clear-bar mechanic.”
    • “If you've played the PSP or Vita releases, the gameplay is largely the same: rotate the 2x2 bricks to match up colors for the timeline to pass over and delete.”
    • “The seemingly simplistic gameplay sucks you in after minutes of playing, and does not let go.”

The graphics options are limited to low resolutions of 640x480 and 960x540, with a fullscreen mode that is problematic on some displays. However, some users appreciate the clean visuals and skins, noting that they complement the game's great music and addictive gameplay.

    • “The music is still great and the graphics and skins look great.”
    • “The clean graphics, good music, and addictive gameplay; it all made sense.”
    • “The only graphic options are 640x480 and 960x540, with a bad fullscreen mode that doesn't work well with my TV.”
    • “640 x 480 resolution graphics (!)”
