Lost Sea

Lost Sea was rather fun to play as you build up your crew to survive, it was just a bit crushing when you die to lose everything you've worked towards over an extended period of time. The world offers incredible variety though with completely unique islands and environments to visit every time you dock. I do however wish there was more variety in what you do on an island as it got fairly repetitive when playing. It was either walk by a pile of crew members you don't have space for, cut some barrels for coins or lug tablets around while avoiding enemies. Lost Sea does provide endless replay value and always offers somewhere new to explore so great potential for extended gameplay.

  • Lost Sea features bright and colorful cel-shaded graphics with charming art style and smooth animations that create a visually appealing and relaxing atmosphere.
  • The procedural generation of islands, variety of biomes, and large amount of loot and upgrades provide decent replayability and encourage exploration.
  • Crew members with different skills add a strategic layer, and the boss fights, though repetitive, offer classic pattern-based challenges for players.
  • The gameplay is repetitive with limited enemy variety and monotonous combat mechanics that lack depth, often leading to boredom after short sessions.
  • The AI of crew members is frustratingly poor; they get stuck easily, do not avoid danger, and friendly fire is common, causing frequent backtracking and annoyance.
  • Permadeath combined with grindy progression and expensive upgrades leads to a harsh difficulty curve that can feel punishing, especially as skills and items are lost upon death.

    30 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay in Lost Sea features basic hack-and-slash mechanics combined with rogue-like elements like permadeath and procedural generation, offering some promise through upgrades, crew abilities, and exploration. However, many players find the mechanics shallow, repetitive, and occasionally flawed, with issues such as slow pacing and frustrating permadeath leading to mixed overall enjoyment. Fans of classic action-adventure and rogue-like styles may appreciate its replay value, but the gameplay often lacks depth and refinement.

    • “Very simple mechanics: by getting experience and gold coins, player can unlock skills, inventory space, and crew that works as power-ups.”
    • “Lost Sea is an indie action rogue-like title featuring permadeath gameplay and procedural generation.”
    • “Other parts of Lost Sea’s gameplay really stand out; as you progress, you rely heavily on your teammates who have unique traits like digging up hidden treasure or unlocking chests, making them key to your progression.”
    • “The basic gameplay just isn't fun.”
    • “The game's mechanics are incredibly shallow.”
    • “There's just a lot of gameplay flaws that make this one fall flat.”
  • graphics
    18 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The graphics of Lost Sea feature a charming, cel-shaded art style with bright, colorful visuals and well-animated character models that enhance exploration and atmosphere. While lacking AAA-level fidelity and showing some repetitive elements, the graphical style is praised for its playful, detailed environments and appealing animations. However, some users note performance issues and limited visual diversity, which can detract from the overall experience.

    • “Lost Sea’s bright and colourful art style gives the game a playful look; the character models are well detailed and well animated, with the enemies looking impressive too.”
    • “The game’s environments are definitely well worth exploring if only for the graphical fidelity on them.”
    • “Lost Sea uses cel shading to good effect, giving its three-dimensional graphics a cartoon feel.”
  • music
    12 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The music in the game is generally pleasant and blends well with the visual theme, creating an enjoyable atmosphere. While it has a charming, pirate-adventure feel and is catchy, the soundtrack tends to be repetitive and not very diverse. Overall, the music supports the game's vibe but doesn't stand out as particularly memorable.

    • “I relaxed for 5 minutes listening to this music, long enough to realize that I would be okay.”
    • “Lost Sea's visuals accompanied by the fantastic soundtrack make the hunt for tablets and finding the way out of the Bermuda Triangle enjoyable.”
    • “Music is catchy, with a sort of pirate adventure movie feel to it.”
    • “The music is nothing special, just a repeating loop that gets lost in the background.”
    • “The music is okay but all the songs are pretty alike.”
    • “The music is okay but all the songs are pretty alike.”
  • story
    6 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game features a minimal story focused on perseverance and survival, with no significant plot changes or narrative depth. Progress is driven by exploring islands, recruiting crew members, and upgrading abilities, leading to a final portal destination. While the story is simple, the challenging gameplay offers a complete experience despite limited replayability.

    • “Moral of the story: you never know what life has in store for you, and if I had given up when all odds were against me, I wouldn't be where I am today.”
    • “There isn’t a story, so you could go on playing indefinitely as long as you’re willing.”
    • “I am not sure it would have much replayability as the actual story and plot does not change from run to run, and to be honest I would be more than happy to get one complete run out of this title, because it is so tough in the first place.”
    • “With the help of other stranded crew members that you find on your path and upgrades you can purchase at each island's dock, your quest is to navigate through the islands up until you reach the final one which allows you to enter a portal that leads you to an unknown place, presumably somewhere safe.”
  • grinding
    4 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Grinding in the game is repetitive and tedious, requiring players to repeatedly face the same creatures with little variety. Additionally, managing crew members is frustrating due to limitations when changing islands, and significant grinding is needed to afford new skills.

    • “A tedious game, incredibly repetitious and lacking any depth.”
    • “You can't even store a few different ones to tediously return to the ship for—all crew not currently assigned as direct sidekicks are lost when you change islands.”
    • “Have fun grinding the same five creatures forever!”
  • stability
    3 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's stability is mixed, with notable issues including screen freezes that can lead to save file deletion and buggy AI. While it is generally a technically sound release, it has limited controller support and persistent bugs at launch.

    • “The graphics are cool and colorful, but even though there isn't much diversity of elements to see, the game demands excessive hardware or the screen can freeze, causing the deletion of the save file if the program is closed by force.”
    • “The game is still buggy right out of the gate and doesn't support any controllers other than the Xbox 360 and PlayStation controllers.”
    • “Apart from the issues mentioned with the buggy AI of the other team members, Lost Sea is a pretty technically sound release.”
  • atmosphere
    3 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The atmosphere is praised for its charming visuals complemented by a fitting musical score, creating an engaging and cohesive environment. Reviewers highlight that the combination of atmosphere, music, and gameplay forms a key part of the game's appeal.

    • “To further add on to the atmosphere we have the music, which while not numerous exhibits the same sort of charm as the visuals.”
    • “Videogames have 3 very important characteristics, a like atmosphere, b like banging music and c like compelling gameplay!”
  • replayability
    3 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Replayability is somewhat mixed; while the core story remains unchanged and the game is challenging, features like randomly generated islands and an upgrade system add variety, offering extended gameplay and exploration opportunities.

    • “The randomly generated islands and the skill/upgrade system help improve the replayability of the game.”
    • “Lost Sea provides endless replay value and always offers somewhere new to explore, showing great potential for extended gameplay.”
    • “I am not sure it would have much replayability as the actual story and plot does not change from run to run, and to be honest I would be more than happy to get one complete run out of this title, because it is so tough in the first place.”
  • emotional
    2 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Users report that the game’s emotional impact is hindered by a disorienting forced perspective camera and repetitive island layouts, while the skill system fails to provide a meaningful sense of character progression.

  • humor
    1 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The humor in the game is highlighted by amusing moments, particularly the entertaining battles against the pirate at the end of each zone.
