The gameplay of Lichtspeer is characterized by its simple yet skill-based mechanics, offering a fun and addictive experience with responsive controls and a variety of enemies. While the core gameplay loop is engaging, it can become repetitive and shallow over time, with limited movement and mechanics that may frustrate players during boss fights. Overall, the game balances style and substance, providing a captivating experience despite some drawbacks in variety and depth.
“This is exactly what good gameplay is: you take a basic skill and test it, ramping up difficulty and presenting that same simple skill in new and surprising ways.”
“Lichtspeer's mechanics may be simple (but still skill-based), but its charm and execution make it worth coming back to for a little arcade goodness.”
“While the gameplay stays consistent throughout, the variety of different enemies and situations thrown at the player gives the game a surprising amount of depth, even if some levels seem unimaginative and/or repetitive.”
“It got really cool visual theme and sound, simple but tight gameplay, lots of variety of enemies and skills and battlefield, but the gameplay is just you literally standing in one place and throwing your spears in an arc, Worms style.”
“The gameplay becomes shallow and repetitive and replaying stages becomes a chore.”
“The game mechanics are still very limited (you can't even move your character around).”

Many reviewers highlight the art style as beautiful and innovative, complemented by a captivating soundtrack, although some note that the visuals may not be groundbreaking. “I like the aesthetic and concept: a (unwilling) champion of an intergalactic light god who slays waves of enemies with a neon spear made of pure light energy for the sole purpose of appeasing its boredom.”
“Very good game - interesting graphical style, great music and captivating gameplay loop - once I sat down I didn't get up for some time.”
“Graphics are fine, music is passable, if unremarkable.”

The story is a lighthearted and absurd concept featuring retro futuristic 70s Germans battling bizarre alien gods, which can be summarized in a single sentence. While it may lack depth, it complements the gameplay with its hilarious and over-the-top elements, enhancing the experience through unique boss fights and challenging gameplay.
“The story that can be told in a single sentence doesn’t get in the way of gameplay.”
“Hilarious, over-the-top story and gameplay, challenging gameplay, unique boss fights.”
“The art style and sound are alright, but there isn't really a story outside of a silly concept about retro-futuristic 70s Germans fighting some weird alien gods.”
“The story can be summarized in a single sentence and doesn’t interfere with gameplay.”
“The story is hilarious and over-the-top, but it feels disconnected from the gameplay experience.”

Players find the grinding aspect of the game to be tedious and frustrating, often feeling like a punishing slog that detracts from the overall enjoyment. The need for extensive grinding to unlock special powers can lead to a sense of wasted time, especially when those powers are unavailable during critical moments.
“They are tedious, stupid, single-mistake-and-die slogs of frustration.”
“It is good enough to give you a hint of joy and then it yanks all that goodness away from you, leaving you miserable and plugging away at whatever tedious grind they came up with.”
“Those special powers need quite a lot of grinding to get, and taking them away when they'd be most needed really twists the knife in your wasted time.”

If you’re looking for something that’s easy to pick up but will present a challenging experience, Lichtspeer may just be what you need.

Lichtspeer is by no means a masterpiece. It won’t change the face of gaming or be crowned Game of the Year 2016 but it is that perfect little game that sometimes you just need. It puts fun above all else and I loved it. The short length focussed around re-playability through special objectives for each level and new powers to play with feels right. The story that can be told in a single sentence doesn’t get in the way of gameplay. The graphics are simple, yet stylish, reminding me a little of Guacamelee. The music is enjoyable, upbeat techno that suits the theme and continued to hold my interest. It just all comes together in a neat package, begging to be played on a slow afternoon. Kick back and be challenged for a few hours. Let everything else fade away and Lichtspeer.
