Gameplay is characterized by its simplicity and accessibility, reminiscent of classic titles like Gauntlet, with tight controls and a variety of game modes that enhance replayability. While some players appreciate the fun, party-friendly mechanics and depth in team-based play, others criticize it for being shallow and lacking complexity, particularly due to its one-button combat system. Overall, the game offers a mix of enjoyable multiplayer experiences, though opinions on its depth and engagement vary significantly.
“The in-game art isn't the best but the game mechanics are stellar and there are tons of game modes and maps to keep things fresh for hours.”
“The gameplay is simple to pick up (but there's plenty of depth too), the controls are tight and responsive, the power-ups are balanced, and the game modes are all fun -- we set it to random and everyone found their favorite modes and maps.”
“The fast-paced gameplay is varied and exciting enough to keep you and 7 friends hooked for hours.”
“The gameplay is very shallow.”
“This game is pure garbage, the biggest disappointment in a long time. The controls are horrible - you have a pad for movement and an instakill attack, nothing fun in that, so it makes the gameplay a terrible experience.”
“Basically this game is one analog stick + one button; this sums up the combat mechanics it offers.”

“Graphics are meh, but I learned that graphics don't mean a thing compared to gameplay.”
“It brings the nostalgia of old 80s arcade games such as Pac-Man and Gauntlet, but mixes it up with slightly better graphics and sound.”
“The artwork is really well done and it feels like a very polished title.”

Players find the grinding aspect of the game to be tedious and boring, particularly criticizing the repetitive nature of tasks like running back and forth in the arena. While some challenges, like the bullet-hell mechanics, offer a degree of difficulty, they often feel unengaging due to the grind required to progress.
“The challenges are tedious or boring.”
“Tedious!”
“Running back and forth the entire arena every time for the swap is just unfun. The bullet-hell is a bit challenging, but you only die to it if you want to kill more than three heads in one go, which makes it tedious.”

Knight Squad (Nintendo Switch)
As far as party games go, Knight Squad has more going for it than you’d expect at first glance. It’s accessible, it’s frenetic, and it’s fun. The lack of online multiplayer and a worthwhile single-player mode will be easily overlooked when you’ve got your personal squad of knights seeking battle in your living room.

Knight Squad may bore many who want a solid standalone game to experience, but certainly stands on its own merits by being an enjoyable multiplayer title. The mechanics work well and don't require too much reflex, as the hit-box of other players is very large, making it so any player has a fair chance at winning. Ultimately, Knight Squad is a decent arcade multiplayer game that will be amusing for a while, but quickly becomes boring after a short amount of time. King and royalty, however, should look elsewhere for a more entertaining tournament.
