17 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The music in the game is widely praised for its catchy and engaging synthwave and retrowave tracks, which enhance the overall experience and rhythm of gameplay. While some players note that the level-specific tracks can become repetitive, the strong audio design and vibrant soundtrack contribute significantly to the game's atmosphere. However, the sound effects, particularly those related to weapon firing, receive mixed reviews, detracting slightly from the overall audio experience.

• “Catchy cool music and sounds.”
• “It's all even got a powerful retrofuture synth-heavy soundtrack to back it all up.”
• “A very graphically pretty game, awesome music, interesting to experience.”
• “This music helps a lot to create the rhythm, and if there is a defect that I can point out is that it is connected to the level. I mean, in the first level you always hear the same music, in the second another, and so on.”
• “This makes the first songs a bit repetitive over time, but it's not as noticeable as you might think, because what matters the most is the beat that helps us find our flow.”
• “We start in an elevator ... with elevator music, but then electronic music starts.”
• graphics
16 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The graphics of the game have received mixed reviews, with many praising the vibrant neon aesthetic and high-quality visuals that create an immersive cyberpunk atmosphere. While some players are impressed by the game's art style and performance, others express disappointment in the overall graphical fidelity compared to expectations set by trailers. Overall, the visuals are described as appealing, with a unique synthwave style, but opinions vary on their execution and consistency across different elements.

• “I'm only a few hours in and am blown away by the world ambience and graphics.”
• “Hypergun has a super cool synthwave style to it all, with a lo-fi vaporwave sort of look to the level designs using simplistic heavy bullet style color palettes but with much, much higher quality visuals and an enormous cyberpunk atmosphere by way of neon lighting and extreme bloom.”
• “A very graphically pretty game, awesome music, interesting to experience.”
• “Graphically, I was somewhat disappointed because in the trailer the game seemed very similar to Superhot, but except for the arm of our character, everything else is very blurry and of much lower quality than I was expecting.”
• “Hypergun has a super cool synthwave style to it all, with a lo-fi vaporwave sort of look to the level designs using simplistic heavy bullet style color palettes, but with much, much higher quality visuals and an enormous cyberpunk atmosphere by way of neon lighting and extreme bloom.”
• “There are a wide range of options to change as well, even down to the graphical looks!”
• gameplay
16 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay of Hypergun is characterized by its fast-paced mechanics and solid performance, but it suffers from extreme repetitiveness and a lack of excitement, making it feel dull and unengaging over time. While some players appreciate the randomization and catchy music, many criticize the simplistic mechanics, poor enemy AI, and uninspired roguelike elements, leading to an overall mixed reception.

• “Unless I was in total mesmerization of every facet of gameplay, normally I wouldn't leave a review this fast. However, in this case, the sheer abundance of negative reviews out there makes me want to leave a positive review right now, just in case there's anyone like myself who is thinking about buying the game but holding off because of the negative reviews.”
• “Add some fast-paced gameplay and a bit of roguelike elements, and you get Hypergun.”
• “In a nutshell, this game is not a work of art, the sound effects are awful, the opponents are so dumb it hurts, but the gameplay is good and the music is excellent.”
• “Tldr: extremely repetitive even by genre standards, gameplay feels bad in every way.”
• “The enemies get very repetitive and quite frankly, the gameplay isn't very fun.”
• “Hypergun lacks any sense of excitement, killing all potential curiosity in engaging with its economy and unlocking further classes or attachments through its drab gameplay.”
• humor
6 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The humor in the game is characterized by a blend of dry wit reminiscent of Borderlands and imaginative, quirky elements related to weapon customization, such as absurd attachments like a ripsaw and a corncob. Players appreciate the fast-paced action and synthwave soundtrack, though some feel that minor gameplay annoyances detract from the overall experience. Overall, the humor adds a unique charm to the game's corporate weapon manufacturing theme.

• “It has a good sense of humor and great music with it being synthwave and retrowave tracks, but little annoyances and bullet spongy bosses and some enemies, as well as your titular weapon never feeling 'hyper' even in the endgame, keep this game from reaching its full potential.”
• “hypergun takes us into the corporate world of weapons manufacturing in a humorous and not-too-distant future where the gun parts are more entertaining than they are practical.”
• “Then there's the completely imaginative gun attachments that range from rad as heck to hilarious as hell, like a ripsaw attachment that fires saw-blades into your enemies or a corncob that fires popcorn in rapid bursts.”
• story
4 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's story is minimal and often feels secondary to the gameplay, with players noting that it lacks depth and engagement. While some narrative elements can be found through in-game tablets and PCs, the overall experience is described as repetitive and lacking a compelling driving force.

• “If you want rinse and repeat garbage and need a full-blown story from a game, look elsewhere.”
• “Although the story of this game is not fundamental, it exists and we can read about it on tablets and PCs left on counters or in the lobby of the game.”
• “While random encounters can often feel stale after dozens of plays, there's no real story or driving force outside of the simulation.”
• stability
4 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's stability is heavily criticized due to numerous glitches and bugs, including game-breaking issues like clipping through walls and poor AI pathfinding. While some players find the gameplay enjoyable despite these problems, the overall consensus is that the game is currently in an unstable state, making it difficult to recommend.

• “I currently cannot recommend the game in its current state, because the devs abandoned it as well as many glitches, bugs, and poor AI/pathfinding still existing, with some bugs being run enders.”
• “Not to mention there are some glitches; for example, if you play as Sue Sharp and use your class ability, it's like a short teleport. If you face a wall, you clip right through the wall and fall into nothing until you quit the game or return to base.”
• “In addition, they suffer from immense cerebral stops, often charging in the wrong direction or against a wall. The glitches multiply, as multiple times there is an alien trapped somewhere, and I even had a case where one spawned inside a wall. I could only hit him because I had gained an attachment for the gun that made the bullets bounce off the walls; otherwise, I would have to restart the game.”
• grinding
4 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Players find the grinding aspect of the game excessively tedious, often feeling that it detracts from the overall experience and sense of achievement. Many report needing to complete numerous runs—up to 40 hours—just to progress, with the grind feeling artificial and primarily designed to extend playtime rather than enhance enjoyment. While unlockable items can eventually make gameplay easier, they do not alleviate the frustration of repetitive grinding, especially against bosses that resist elemental damage.

• “It makes the game feel extremely grindy and there's barely a sense of accomplishment.”
• “You just end up dying over and over again grinding for coins until you get enough unlocks where the game starts to drop them semi-commonly, and then proceed to get carried by the absurdly broken elemental damage and effects on the unlockable items that completely shred enemies (but not bosses since they're immune to elemental properties).”
• “On one hand, these roguelites get too grindy at times, requiring at least 20 runs (~40 hours) before you see the final floor.”
• optimization
2 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's graphics and music are praised, but performance issues are a significant concern, with players reporting subpar optimization even on high custom settings, particularly on older hardware.

• “I could not find anything like that, and I was playing on high custom settings. My computer is older than some people's brains, who were saying that it was not optimized well.”
• “The game runs poorly even on high-end hardware, which is frustrating given the expectations.”
• “Despite adjusting the settings, I still experience significant lag and frame drops, indicating a lack of proper optimization.”
• replayability
2 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

While the game offers some replay value, particularly for fans of its core mechanics, it lacks the extensive replayability found in more robust roguelikes, as the gameplay loop remains consistent throughout.

• “In these games, there is always replay value, although the game loop remains consistent.”
• “The replayability factor keeps me coming back for more, as each playthrough offers new challenges and experiences.”
• “With multiple paths and choices, every run feels fresh and engaging, making it hard to put down.”
• “If you're looking for tens or hundreds of hours of roguelike replayability, perhaps look elsewhere.”
• “In these games, there is always replay value, although the game loop is always the same.”
• emotional
1 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Players express a sense of heartbreak regarding the game's current state, suggesting that it may represent the pinnacle of what the game can achieve, which evokes a strong emotional response.

• “Until then, this may be the best version of the game we'll get, and that's a little heartbreaking.”
• atmosphere
1 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The atmosphere of Hypergun is characterized by a vibrant synthwave aesthetic, featuring lo-fi vaporware-inspired level designs and a striking cyberpunk ambiance enhanced by neon lighting and intense bloom effects. The game combines simplistic color palettes with high-quality visuals, creating a unique and immersive experience.

• “Hypergun has a super cool synthwave style to it all, with a lo-fi vaporwave sort of look to the level designs. The simplistic heavy bullet style color palettes are complemented by much higher quality visuals, creating an enormous cyberpunk atmosphere with neon lighting and extreme bloom.”
• “The atmosphere feels flat and uninspired, lacking the depth and immersion that I expected from a game of this genre.”
• “Despite the vibrant visuals, the overall atmosphere is surprisingly lifeless, making it hard to get invested in the game world.”
• “The game tries to create a unique atmosphere, but it ultimately falls short, leaving players feeling disconnected from the environment.”
