  • music
    24 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The music in the game has received mixed reviews, with many players finding it repetitive, dull, and lacking the boldness needed to enhance the gameplay experience. Comparisons to other games, like WarioWare, highlight a significant deficiency in variety and energy, leading to a sense of frustration among players. However, some users appreciate the unique themes for each level and the overall catchy soundtrack, suggesting that while the music has potential, it ultimately falls short of expectations.

    • “What’s also great is that each level has a unique music theme.”
    • “Game Soup is a collection of mini-games with an amazing soundtrack to go with it.”
    • “The beautiful art style and musical themes are accompanied by addictively fun gameplay.”
    • “On top of all of the gameplay issues, the music is so annoying to have to listen to over and over again.”
    • “It's the same songs on repeat without any diversity really ever.”
    • “The music is where this game fails completely. Honestly, with good music, this game could've squeezed a positive review from me, but the game's music is far too tame and isn't bold enough for what it aims to be. WarioWare: Smooth Moves is a great game for comparison; go listen to all the minigame jingles and see how it varies from insane guitar riffs to funky future-sounding music. Not only that, but the random sound effects, sounds of the timers ticking down, all add to the charming atmosphere those games have. Game Soup does not do that; it's overly quiet and minimal with the music, and frankly, the minigame jingles are laughably dull and boring. So much so that I ended up just slapping the WarioWare OST over it instead because it was genuinely beginning to irk me that much. This game definitely needed to be more confident and heavier with its music; it felt too shallow and as a result, detracted from the game.”
  • graphics
    12 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The graphics in Game Soup are described as having a charming yet inconsistent aesthetic, reminiscent of WarioWare and Rhythm Heaven, with some users noting that the anime-style faces appear off. While the pixel art is appreciated, the overall execution lacks refinement, leading to some gameplay elements, like fading text, obstructing visibility. Despite these critiques, the game is praised for its cute art style and humorous presentation, contributing to its fun and engaging atmosphere.

    • “Awesome WarioWare-like game collection with a cute art style and humorous presentation.”
    • “The beautiful art style and musical themes are accompanied by addictively fun gameplay.”
    • “Adorable, well-made art style.”
    • “The graphics are alright, you can tell what game is supposed to be what, but I felt some of the anime-styled faces look a bit off. I think generally the game should've gone for a more pixel style since all the pixel work they did seemed nice and looked fine. However, the graphics aren't the best. It's also worth noting that the text which displays what to do for each minigame fades out and blocks some of the view. In the Undertale minigame, it can be impossible to see what to dodge, so I have to mark it down here.”
    • “Overall, a decent try at making a WarioWare-like game, but due to unrefined style and lack of solidarity in what gives those games a sense of style, Game Soup failed to live up to the expectations I had for a microgame-styled game. With more refined graphics, some characters of its own to add variety on stages, and much better music, I'd be leaving a positive review.”
    • “While the graphics look humble and animations are lacking, the game certainly has its style.”
  • gameplay
    12 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay features a collection of 46 quick microgames that become progressively faster, offering a mix of fun and cheeky imitations of other games. While most mini-games are enjoyable, some fall flat and don't resonate well with players. Overall, the experience is characterized by its addictive nature and engaging art style, making it a worthwhile, albeit brief, gaming experience.

    • “It’s all about the gameplay.”
    • “The beautiful art style and musical themes are accompanied by addictively fun gameplay.”
    • “There are 46 micro-games in total, they differ in gameplay, but they can be easily divided into four groups.”
    • “The gameplay, as just explained, consists of quick, short microgames that progressively get faster through the stage. While some are cheeky imitations of other games and none of them are inherently bad, some are just kind of 'eh' and don't really work well. These include: Space Invaders, Marriage, Failsafe, Undertale Evade, Block, Kung Fu, Helmet Selection, and PVZ Spit.”
    • “The gameplay mainly consists of 5-second very basic mini-games.”
    • “Well, if 20 minutes of gameplay seems fair to you for the price of a big chocolate bar, sure.”
  • humor
    9 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The humor in the game is characterized by its "dork humor" and clever mini-games that enhance the overall enjoyment. Players appreciate the combination of cute art, engaging music, and humorous elements, making it a delightful experience for those seeking lighthearted, quick entertainment. Overall, the game successfully delivers a fun and amusing collection of micro-games that resonate well with fans of the genre.

    • “Awesome WarioWare-like game collection with a cute art style and humorous presentation.”
    • “The micro-games each have great art, music, and humor.”
    • “I've been craving some mindless, hilarious, quick mini games and this scratches that itch!”
  • story
    4 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game lacks a substantial story, with users noting that it primarily focuses on game references rather than narrative depth. While the cat theme and reused assets add some charm, many feel that a more cohesive story or thematic separation would enhance the overall experience.

    • “The cat theme and reused assets give it some charm and personality; however, I do think it would have been more valuable for them to separate their games into 2-3 themes, add a couple more to round out the numbers, and create some kind of story akin to WarioWare.”
    • “This is WarioWare, but with way more of a focus on referencing other games and being just a bit too long and lacking a story that I could find.”
    • “That’s it, there isn’t any story whatsoever.”
    • “The cat theme and reused assets give it some charm and personality; however, I do think it would have been more valuable for them to separate their games into 2-3 themes, add a couple more to round out the numbers, and create some kind of story a la WarioWare.”
  • replayability
    2 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

While some games suffer from static levels that diminish replayability, others excel in this aspect, offering varied experiences that encourage multiple playthroughs. Overall, the potential for replayability can significantly enhance a game's appeal.

    • “Sadly, the levels of some games tend to stay almost exactly the same no matter how many times you play them, which diminishes the replayability.”
    • “The replayability is really where the game will likely shine.”
  • stability
    2 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game generally runs well on the Steam Deck, providing a smooth experience with only minor glitches, such as occasional texture issues. These small problems are overshadowed by the overall enjoyment and humor the game offers.

    • “It's a great WarioWare-type game that runs smoothly on the Steam Deck right out of the box.”
    • “There are a few small glitches, like textures occasionally crashing or getting stuck, but those don't really matter when you find yourself cracking your ribs in laughter when you see someone first play the game.”
    • “The game crashes frequently, making it nearly impossible to enjoy the experience without constant interruptions.”
    • “I encountered several bugs that caused the game to freeze, which really detracted from the overall enjoyment.”
  • optimization
    2 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game is praised for its smooth performance and ease of play, although players should be cautious as mistakes can lead to quick losses of lives.

    • “The game looks and runs smoothly and isn’t hard to play, but one slip, and those lives can disappear quickly.”
  • atmosphere
    1 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The atmosphere of the game is significantly hindered by its lackluster music, which reviewers describe as overly tame and dull, failing to create an engaging or dynamic experience. In contrast to more vibrant titles like WarioWare, the minimalistic sound design and uninspired jingles detract from the overall charm, leaving players feeling that the game lacks the confidence and boldness needed to enhance its atmosphere.

    • “The music is where this game fails completely. Honestly, with good music, this game could've squeezed a positive review from me, but the game's music is far too tame and isn't bold enough for what it aims to be.
